The tag most often given to Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill is "father of modern American playwriting." His claim to that tag stems from his being the first playwright to lend a serious and distinctive voice to contemporary themes and dramatize them against a background of twentieth Century America. Eugene was the third son of an actor best known for touring in the melodrama, The Count of Monte Christo. Anna Christie.

eugene O'Neill died as an empty man very similar to one of the tragic charactersin his plays. It seemed as though the young O'Neill had no direction.
http://www2.roanoke.edu/Chemistry/JSteehler/HNRS301/Fiction/Oneill.html
O'Neill was born in New York City in 1888 to one of the most popular actors of the time, James O'Neill. He spent a large part of his early childhood in and out of hotels and cities, touring with his actor father and his mother. O'Neill's early education was spent in boarding schools and in 1906 he began a short one-year stint at Princeton University which ended in his expulsion. He was married for the first time in 1909, but would divorce three years later. In the end O'Neill was married three times, two of which ended in divorce. He had three children, but was estranged from all three in one way or another. He cut his daughter, Oona out of his life when at age 18, she married Charlie Chaplin, who was the same age as her father. Eugene O'Neill died as an empty man very similar to one of the tragic characters in his plays. It seemed as though the young O'Neill had no direction. He worked in Honduras as a gold prospector and as a seaman. While back in New York City, O'Neill contracted tuberculosis. While at Gaylord Farm Sanitarium in Connecticut he experienced what he himself termed his "rebirth" and he became inspired to write plays. After his "rebirth", O'Neill had a different perspective on life, he states that "I am far from being a pessimist...on the contrary in spite of my scars, I am tickled to death by life". O'Neills plays can be divided into three phases, realist, expressionistic, and once again realist. In his first realist phase, O'Neill reflected on man and his experiences as a seaman. In the 1920's O'Neill began to look at the driving forces behind human life and the plays that resulted comprise his expressionistic phase.

things? I sometimes think that the United States for this reason isthe greatest failure the world has ever seen. eugene O'NEILL.
http://www.geocities.com/snoopythewriter/ONEILL.html
None of us can help the things life has done to us. They're done before you realize it, and once they're done they make you do other things until at last everything comes between you and what you'd like to be, and you have lost your true self forever.
The past is the present, isn't it? It's the future, too. We all tried to lie out of that but life won't let us.
We talk about the American Dream, and want to tell the world about the American Dream, but what is that Dream, in most cases, but the dream of material things? I sometimes think that the United States for this reason is the greatest failure the world has ever seen. EUGENE O'NEILL

    Apostrophes in searches

VICTOR follows CARL normalization rules for apostrophes for all type searches, VICTORWeb follows those rules for all searches except name browse search and subject browse search. Regarding VICTORWeb userreport problem #69: Normalization problem Names: apostrophes
CARL normalization rules call for apostrophes to be retained in //nb/ and for //sb/ for names used as subjects (660,610,611). Text-based VICTOR observes these rules for //nb/ and //sb/, placing user in proper portion of name or subject index. At present, one may search the apostrophed-name with a space rather than an apostrophe (O neill), then page down through the index to that portion containing names with apostrophes. Or forget about browse, and search name with apostrophe in //n or //w or //sw. CARL normalization rules indicate that punctuation such as apostrophes are removed in //w, //n, and //sw/ searches, and apostrophes are retained for //t if they are embedded in word (in fact, query must include embedded apostrophe if title includes it). Search for title: Eugene O'Neill review
search for name: Eugene O'Neill Society
