Parliament of Whores . 1991. PJ O'Rourke. Vintage Books, NY This is a book, or collection of essays, by a right-wing alcoholic, in which he sometimes wittily insults the whole government as being dysfunctional. He has a lucrative job, and likes his drugs, and is upset that the government wants some of his money and drugs. He makes a few good points (that is, I agree), but some of his arguments are weakened by his admittedly casual statistics and calculations. Farm policy does seem like a particularly egregious example of government and social stupidity. But the arguments against anti-poverty programs are poor, in that his numbers can also be viewed as demonstrating the positive value and point of those programs. People who complain may well be right, but to come up with good answers is much harder and more respectable. His discussion of the flag-burning case before the Supreme Court in the Bush administration is amusing and ambivalent. The justices even seem to have senses of humor. Among William Kunstler's arguments opposing the legislation: that it singles out one political symbol for protection, that it is viewpoint based because it proscribes conduct that shows disrespect for the flag but allows ceremonial burning of same and permits conduct that is dangerous to the flag, such as flying it in a hurricane. On the other hand, the flag burning could be considered "fighting words". With that in mind, offended individuals could understandably react violently. Some states passed laws permitting that defense. [Which to me is certainly not reason for governments to pass laws defending and promoting flag worship].

The Open Problems Project
edited by Erik D. Demaine Joseph S. B. Mitchell Joseph O'Rourke
Introduction
This is the beginning of a project to record open problems of interest to researchers in computational geometry and related fields. It commenced with the publication of thirty problems in Computational Geometry Column 42 [ ] (see Problems 1-30 ), but has grown much beyond that. We encourage correspondence to improve the entries; please send email to TOPP@cs.smith.edu . If you would like to submit a new problem, please fill out this template Each problem is assigned a unique number for citation purposes. Problem numbers also indicate the order in which the problems were entered. Each problem is classified as belonging to one or more categories. The problems are also available as a single Postscript or PDF file. To begin navigating through the open problems, you may select from a category of interest below, or view a list of all problems sorted numerically

Categorized List of All Problems
Below, each category lists the problems that are classified under that category. Note that each problem may be classified under several categories.

Jacket Description
Jacob E. Goodman, co-founder and editor of , the preeminent journal on this area in the international mathematics and computer science community, joins forces with the distinguished computer scientist Joseph O'Rourk e and other well-known authorities to produce the definitive handbook on these two interrelated fields. Over the past decade or so, researchers and professionals in discrete geometry and the newer field of computational geometry have developed a highly productive collaborative relationship, where each area benefits from the methods and insights of the other . At the same time that discrete and computational geometry are becoming more closely identified, applications of the results of this work are being used in an increasing number of widely differing areas, from computer graphics and linear programming to m anufacturing and robotics. The authors have answered the need for a comprehensive handbook for workers in these and related fields, and for other users of the body of results.

The Liberty Manifesto
by P.J. O'Rourke P.J. O'Rourke is the Cato Institute's Mencken research fellow. He delivered these remarks at a May 6, 1993 gala dinner celebrating the opening of the Cato Institute's new headquarters in Washington. The Cato Institute has an unusual political cause which is no political cause whatsoever. We are here tonight to dedicate ourselves to that cause, to dedicate ourselves, in other words, to . . . nothing. We have no ideology, no agenda, no catechism, no dialectic, no plan for humanity. We have no "vision thing," as our ex-president would say, or, as our current president would say, we have no Hillary. All we have is the belief that people should do what people want to do, unless it causes harm to other people. And that had better be clear and provable harm. No nonsense about second-hand smoke or hurtful, insensitive language, please. I don't know what's good for you. You don't know what's good for me. We don't know what's good for mankind. And it sometimes seems as though we're the only people who don't. It may well be that, gathered right here in this room tonight, are all the people in the world who don't want to tell all the people in the world what to do. This is because we believe in freedom. Freedom what this country was established upon, what the Constitution was written to defend, what the Civil War was fought to perfect.

Here, at the pyramids, was an answer from the earliest days of civilization: People have always been crazy." by P. J. O'Rourke atred between Palestinians and Israelis abides. Arab-led Islamic fundamentalism destabilizes nations from Algeria to the Philippines. The threat of terrorist attacks by al Qaeda continues. Also, our car needs gas. It is important to understand Arab culture. Egypt seems a good place to start. Egypt is by far the most populous Arab state. And although Egypt is a poor country in per-capita-income terms, its economy is larger than Saudi Arabia's. Historically Egypt has been the most westward-looking of Arab countries. A Napoleonic invasion, an Albanian pasha named Muhammad Ali, and a British takeover gave Egyptians plenty to look at. The modern Islamist movement can be dated from the founding of the Muslim Brotherhood, by an Egyptian schoolteacher, Hassan al-Banna, in 1928. Two of Osama bin Laden's closest aides, Ayman al-Zawahiri and the late Muhammad Atef, came from Egypt, as did Mohammed Atta, who led the September 11 hijackings. And there is this thing called the "Arab street," which various serious people take seriously. In the November 11, 2001

Squishier than thou Demonstrating against reality in London and Washington by P. J. O'Rourke I headed cheerlessly to the designated smoking area, expecting to find a room full of desperate, fireless people paying black-market prices for Nicorette. Everyone was smoking. I asked for a light, and someone produced a disposable lighter. It seems that if you went through one of the airport's two security portals, you were made to surrender all lighters and matches. But if you went through the other ... The profiling at the boarding gate couldn't be called racial, exactly. The ruddy and the pallid were ushered directly onboard, as were the sufficiently black. It was the tanned or swarthy who had to line up for additional questioning. On my flight these included, as far as I could tell, some Hindus, some Filipinos, a Hispanic or two, and a pair of elderly Iranian women wearing chadors in violation of America's new no-unusual-things-on-your-head taboo, which has brought grief to Sikhs in the U.S. hinterland. (Not that there hasn't been Sikh terrorism, but it was directed against Indira Gandhi, in retaliation for the Indian army's storming the Golden Temple at Amritsar. This isn't an issue at the moment, but the complexities of building an international coalition against terrorism could be illustrated if India demands a wholesale revocation of Sikh cab licenses in New York, thereby bringing that city to a halt again.)

    Book Review
Age and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence, and a Bad Haircut by P. J. O'Rourke
    P. J. O'Rourke's latest collection of essays follows his development from a 1960's radical wanna-be to a 1990's Republican supporter. At least, that's what I inferred from the book's description. It turns out that O'Rourke's style and humor haven't changed very much since the early 1970's where he worked for small "underground" magazines that were run by careless students. Has O'Rourke changed? No, but perhaps that's the point. Sure, he says he was a radical in the 60's, but was he really? I think the answer is no,. Maybe when it comes down to it, youthful idealism is something no one really has. Maybe it's just a thing one invents when one gets older and realizes that you've been struggling for years and have produced nothing. One thing can be said abot O'Rourke though, he doesn't miss his idealism one bit. He's honest. He says he liked the drugs and the sex, but when you get down to it nothing really happened. Another thing that any P. J. O'Rourke reader already knows, he IS funny. Like his attitudes, his humor hasn't changed since the 60's. When it's good, it's very good. When it's bad well, he's usually talking about golf or some other thing I can't relate to. His funniest one-liners are aimed at children of the 60's.

    http://www.econ.duke.edu/~bancroft/154Home/ORourke.html
Here are some excerpts from Chapter 1 of humorist P. J. O'Rourke's, Eat the Rich: A Treatise on Economics . His indictment of economics as confusing and economists as confused is one that is shared by many. Economics is a hard subject. It forces us to dig beneath the surface, often to find results that only complicate our decision-making or conflict with firmly-held beliefs or our favorite political slogans. If political figures we admire (or at least support) are so convinced of the wisdom of certain policies, why should we listen to so-called experts who can only talk in jargon and equations, are wishy-washy whenever they use ordinary language (on the one hand, . . . but then on the other . . .) and can't even agree with one another? This course will have much to say, directly and indirectly, about popular views of economics and economists. Toward the end of the course, we'll re-examine the topic of why there is such widespread ignorance of basic and important economic relationships, even in high places. Excerpts from Chapter 1 of P. J. O'Rourke's
