The popularity of satirist P. J. O’Rourke is easy enough to understand. In bestselling books like Parliament of Whores and All The Trouble in the World he takes on “big issues” like government and geopolitics and reduces them to comic rubble. In essence, anything can be understood, no matter how intimidating or possibly dangerous, if you’re armed with an expense account and the lightning mind of a born smartass. While many people have one or the other, few have both, and thusly we have a market for P. J. O’Rourke. In Eat the Rich , O’Rourke takes on another “big issue”, perhaps the most confusing of all in spite of its omnipresence in our lives: economics. He begins by introducing himself as yet another know-nothing who slept through college Econ 101 courses, and decides that it’s time he plays a bit of catch-up. And so, armed with travel vouchers from the glossy magazines where he works (O’Rourke is the “Foreign Affairs Desk Chief” at Rolling Stone ), he sets off around the world to learn about money and, as Adam Smith put it, “the wealth of nations”.

    HOLIDAYING WITH O'ROURKE
P J O'ROURKE`S Holidays in Hell (Picador 1989) is recommended holiday reading. Whether you're lazing in the land of sun, sand and sangria or shivering in a shelter on a wet and windswept English promenade, you can enjoy a virtual holiday following O'Rourke from Beirut to Belfast via various other venues of murder, massacre and mayhem. Former Editor of National Lampoon and currently Foreign Affairs Editor for Rolling Stone , he is also the author of such books as Give War a Chance . 'PJ' has the rare, possibly unique, distinction of being "a right-wing satirist". Holidays In Hell is by now a little dated for the accounts were written between '84 and '88 and some of the world's hotspots have moved on. But PJ is a very witty writer and although sometimes weak or glib, he will have you smiling involuntarily, even if you don't share his gung-ho enthusiasm for US power and the American Way of Life. PJ is a master of stabbing one-liners: "Commies love concrete, but they don't know how to make it." (page 83).

    Books on Economics
    Eat The Rich By P.J. O'Rourke (1998)
Why isn't everybody rich? That's the question that drives libertarian humorist P.J. O'Rourke in his latest book, Eat the Rich. O'Rourke draws on his personal travels to answer, as he puts it, "Why do some places prosper and thrive while others just suck?" O'Rourke seems to be reaching out to an audience beyond his traditional "Republican Party Reptile" (libertarian-ish) readers. By using humor to compare economic systems, O'Rourke tries to soft-sell the free market, arguing that it is the best engine of abundance and human vitality. Most of the book is O'Rourke at his wonderful best. His whirlwind tour of societies from Albanian anarchy to Swedish drabness to Tanzanian emptiness keeps the reader on a roller coaster thrill. O'Rourke's descriptions transport the reader as any good travel writing does, but with the added advantage of having a drunken H.L. Mencken as a traveling companion. In all cases the free market emerges as the winner for creating abundance, and in general a life worth living. After decades of totalitarian communism in Cuba erased such luxuries as cars and gasoline, Cubans were "so used to empty streets that anyone who looked both ways before crossing was probably a paranoid schizophrenic." The Cuban peso is so worthless that even the Cuban government has "dollar stores" that only accept U.S. currency. Outside dollar stores, goods are hard to find. "The Cuban rationing system is simple," says O'Rourke. "They're out of everything."

On 14 March 2000, John Foxton Ross Kerr, Emeritus Professor of Pathology at the University of Queensland, received the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize for his description of apoptosis, a form of cell death. The prize, which he shared with Boston biologist Robert Horvitz, is considered to be one of the most prestigious European awards in science, second only to the Nobel Prize. John Kerr's discovery , initially called "shrinkage necrosis" but which he later renamed "apoptosis", came about in the late 1960s, when his attention was caught by a curious form of liver cell death during his studies of acute liver injury in rats. The findings of this seminal study were first published in 1965. Subsequently, Kerr and his co-authors (including Jeffrey Searle) described the unique morphological changes of this type of cell death, compared with those of necrosis, in a series of articles published during the 1970s and 1980s. These studies extended the range of pathological and physiological states in which apoptosis is known to occur. The purpose of a funeral service
is to comfort the living. It is important
at a funeral to display excessive grief.
This will show others how kind-hearted
and loving you are and their improved
opinion of you will be very comforting.
    America wasn't founded so that
we could all be better. America was founded so we could all be anything we damn well pleased. Family love is messy, clinging, and of an annoying and repetitive pattern, like bad wallpaper. This is a moment of hope in history. Why doesn't anybody say so. Anyway, no drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power. One of the annoying things about believing in free will and individual responsibility is the difficulty of finding somebody to blame your problems on. And when you do find somebody, it's remarkable how often his picture turns up on your driver's license.

Office hours: TR 9:15-11:45, W 8-10, F 8-11 Course Objectives This course is designed to give students a basic introduction to the academic discipline known as political science. The instructor has decided to take a shotgun approach to the topic: the material covered in the class will be very broad but not very deep, in the hope that at least some of it will penetrate the student’s head. This course is also intended to demonstrate some of the reasons why people study political science as well as the practical uses of political science outside the classroom. Students with documented disabilities or chronic illnesses that may affect their academic performance should contact me within the first week of class. I am quite willing to make accommodations if needed. All assignments are due at the beginning of class – which means by the time roll is called – on the date indicated in the syllabus. I DO NOT ACCEPT ASSIGNMENTS BY EMAIL. If you are not going to be in class on the day an assignment is due, deliver the assignment to me or have it delivered by a friend before I leave my office for class. You can also give the assignment to another student who is taking this course, but that student must turn the assignment when class begins. ANY ASSIGNMENTS RECEIVED AFTER ATTENDANCE IS CALLED AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ARE CONSIDERED LATE AND WILL RECEIVE A GRADE OF ZERO. Exceptions to this policy will be made only in the event of true emergencies, such as hospitalization or the death of a family member. “The computer ate my disk” and “my printer didn’t work this morning” are not acceptable excuses.

Eat the Rich > Customer Review #1: Where was this when I was taking all that econ?
P.J. ORourke is without a doubt my favorite essayist and writer (I got hooked on P.J. when he was writing for "Car and Driver" and have never regretted my addiction), and this book didnt fail to live up to my expectations. P.J. takes a basic look at economics, and then flavors that look with real-world examples as gleaned from his globe-trotting excursions in the pursuit of truth. He starts with a simple examination of the basic, mind-numbing econ a large number of us slept through in college, and arguably this is the weakest part of the book. While his presentation is brief, understandable, and to the point, its also filled with just a bit too much diatribe against the pointlessness of much of economic theory. However, these sections are as short as they are acidic. Its after that however that P.J. is at his finest; writing about what he sees and experiences as he makes a round-the-world compare and contrast paper out of the economies of a variety of countries (and if you like this, go read "Holidays in Hell"). Comparing the economies of Tanzania, Hong Kong, and Shanghai through his witty observations and anecdotal references is worth the price of admission. When he visits a country, he really visits the country, getting to see its seamy underside as well as the glitzy parts photographed in the travel brochures. And no one is better at producing the telling anecdote that completely sums up his point than P.J.
