Winter 2002/2003 the volcano sequence Alicia Suskin Ostriker University of Pittsburgh Press ($12.95) by Julie Drake f a reader is very lucky, maybe once a year will she come across a book of poetry that will change how she views the world. As 2002 comes to a close, this reader is happy to report the volcano sequence is that book. Ostriker's tenth volume of poetry begins with a section whose title could aptly sum up the entire book-"ruthless radiance"-and with a poem, "volcano," that lets us know this will not be a "feel-good" book, but that instead, it will burn: the volcano is a crack in the earth
the volcano is a bulge over a crack
a fault line runs under it something terrible happens
and the magma
coughs out hot beauty
thick and magnificent rage
so what if afterward everything is dead Ostriker has been called "a poet...who was raised an atheist (Jewish atheist-a special strand) and is seeking god-or the poems are." In this book, the poems continue the search for god, or rather it should be said they find god, as several of them carry on a conversation with him, as in "during the bombing of Kosovo": and you, you-

Essays that explore the meaning of politics, love, and spiritual life in American poetry from Whitman to the present. This volume of essays celebrates poetry that aims to change the world, whether through engagement with political issues, reimagining the meanings of love, recasting our relationship with nature; or through new relationships with our spiritual traditions. Alicia Ostriker's opening essay, defining the difference between poetry and propaganda, surveys the artistic accomplishments of the women's poetry movement. Succeeding essays explore the meaning of politics, love, and the spiritual life in the work of Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Bishop, Sharon Olds, Maxine Kumin, Lucille Clifton, and Allen Ginsberg. In her work, Ostriker can be controversial, as when she attacks the academic establishment for rejecting the erotic dimension of poetry, or when she meditates on the significance of the black poet Lucille Clifton to herself as a reader, or when she argues that Allen Ginsberg's "Howl"famous as the primary poem of the Beat Generationis also a profoundly Jewish poem. Yet her writing is always lively and readable, free of academic jargon, inviting the reader to enjoy a wide range of poetic styles and experiences. Ostriker's criticism, like her poetry, is both feminist and deeply humane. These essays on American poetry will appeal to students of poetry, scholars of American literature, and anyone who enjoys the work of the poets discussed in the book.

Eliot Katz has been for years an exuberant heir of Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, and Allen Ginsberg. He has been oracular, comic, furiously compassionate, explosively and winsomely political, madly inventive, acutely vernacular. To read or hear him is to become energized by his contagious humanity. And now Eliot Katz has become a major poet of witness. Return

Auden, but there are those of us who disagree." So begins Alicia Ostriker's Dancing at the Devil's Party . The nod to Auden is respectful, but it's clear that Ostriker is not in Auden's camp. Poetry "can tear at the heart with its claws, make the neural nets shiver, flood us with hope, despair, longing, ecstasy, love, anger, terror," she writes. For Ostriker, poems are both crucial and relevant. She respects poems, the way one respects magic or religion or anything that smacks of the ineffable.
