Who was Ovid?
S HORT A NSWER : A Roman Poet Vital Statistics
  • Full Name : Publius Ovidius Naso
  • Born : 20th March, 43 B.C. Sulmo (modern Sulmona ), Italy
  • Education : Law School. Taught by the best rhetoric teachers in Rome, Arellius Fuscus and Porcius Latro.
  • Marital Status: Married three times
  • Accomplishments : See What Did Ovid Write?
  • Died : 17 or 18 A.D. Tomi (modern Constanta , Romania)
L ONGER A NSWER : Ovid was either the last of the Golden Age poets, such as Vergil and Horace, or first of the Silver Age poets, such as Lucan and Statius [see Karl Galinsky (1989). "Was Ovid a Silver Latin Poet?" Illinois Classical Studies (1-2): 69-88]. Unlike Vergil and Horace who lived through the civil wars that marked the violent end of the Roman Republic, Ovid was the first major Roman Poet to come of age wholly in the Augustan Agethe beginning of the Roman Empire. Coming from Sulmo (modern Sulmona ), Ovid was not Roman but Paelignian. The Paeligni had a long association with Rome and the Ovidii were a locally prominent familywe know of another, earlier member of the family, Lucius Ovidius Ventrio, who held office [see

Beauty and the Paradigm
by Mark K. Anderson
The following essay was originally published in two parts in the Summer 1997 and the Fall 1997/Winter 1998 Shakespeare Oxford Newsletter. Last year, I wrote an article for the Shakespeare Oxford Newsletter on Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn's concept of "paradigm shifts" and the Oxfordian movement. ( "A Little More Than Kuhn and Less Than Kind," Newsletter, Winter 1996.) In the interim, the essay's reception outside the Oxfordian enclave has been delightfully mixed. It has been assigned reading lists in higher education, while in the Internet's online world, the Obfuscation Police were apparently called on to disperse the growing crowds around Kuhn's work. "Ever since Kuhn's book came out in the 1960s, every crackpot whose ideas are rejected by the establishment has piously declared that they represent a new 'paradigm,' and that the old guard is just clinging to their outmoded ideas because they can't see beyond the old paradigm," wrote Shakespeare Authorship Page co-manager David Kathman earlier this year. "This does not mean that everyone who invokes Kuhn is a crackpot, only that many of them are, and that just invoking Kuhn in favor of your cause doesn't mean a whole lot." Online correspondent Caius Marcius went Kathman one better. He stated that the authorship controversy was about a "fact" -i.e. whether Oxford or Shakspere of Stratford was the author-and not a theory. Therefore Kuhn's findings were irrelevant to Oxfordianism. (Never mind that the same sleight-of-hand can be performed with Kuhn's own case study. Namely, the stir Copernicus caused was merely about a "fact"-i.e. whether the Sun or the Earth is at the center of the Solar System. Argal Kuhn's findings are irrelevant to Kuhn's data.)

the status of this site::
I'm sure many of you have noticed that "Recent" Ovidian Bibliography has become something of a nomen mendax for this page. The fact is, I have been out of academia since September 2000, when I left my position as Assistant Editor at the Database of Classical Bibliography to become head programmer at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Also, after I graduated from New York University, I lost my access to RLIN and the MLA bibliography and other good, but subscription-based bibliography sites from which I used to cull my data. So do not have they time or resources that I did when I began this in 1997, but I am still offering the bibliography for what it is is worth, which I think is still quite a lot. Quo vadam? It takes a lot of work to maintain a site like this one by yourself. It grew out of work I was doing anyway for my dissertation, but now I obviously have less impulse to devour all the scholarly work on Ovid (though I still love and read our favorite Roman poet). My wife and I also have a baby on the way, due at the end of October. What I would like, then, is to see this become a self-sustaining site.

Introduction ovid's influence on Western art and literature cannot be exaggerated.The Metamorphoses is our best classical source of 250 myths.
http://larryavisbrown.homestead.com/files/xeno.ovid1.htm
An introduction and commentary with discussion of myths and links to sources and influences in art and literature Larry A. Brown, Nashville, TN Introduction: Ovid's influence on Western art and literature cannot be exaggerated. The Metamorphoses is our best classical source of 250 myths. "The poem is the most comprehensive, creative mythological work that has come down to us from antiquity" (Galinsky). Based on its influence, "European literature and art would be poorer for the loss of the Metamorphoses than for the loss of Homer" (Hadas). Ovid was a major inspiration for Dante, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton (see bibliography on last page). If Virgil is Rome's greatest poet, Ovid is the most popular (even in his own time; Ovidian graffiti has been found on the walls of Pompeii). As one example of Ovid's influence on Western art and literature, read the famous story of Daedalus and Icarus in Book 8. Ovid's account is the earliest in extant literature, although the story is much older, found on 6th century vases. Christopher Marlowe alludes to this story in his tragedy of Dr. Faustus
