"Futz!" Opens at the de Lys
Rochelle Owens Play Staged By O'Horgan
Bakos in Title Role With La Mama Troupe
    by Clive Barnes
The New York Times - June 14, 1968
Bestiality - oh final horror - has come to Off-Broadway. It came last night at the Theater de Lys in a play called "Futz!" The strange thing is - and is this a sign of the corruption of our society? - the crime, act, fact, or whatever you want to call it, of bestiality would have come to Broadway itself if another show, "Leda Had A Little Swan", had not been beastly enough, and sadly, boring enough, to collapse during previews before the scheduled opening. However, Rochelle Owens's "Futz!", which I saw at one of its final previews, has beaten its controversial path into our ken. And I must say I am glad it did. Miss Owens's play was first given for one performance nearly three years ago at the Tyronne Guthrie Workshop of the Minnesota Theater Company. In March of last year it was offered, in decent obscurity off-off-Broadway at Cafe La Mama. But then last fall, the La Mama Troupe ventured to the Edinburgh Festival, and incurred some charming legal judgments and journalistic opinions from the worthy Edinburgh burghers. Indeed, probably at this very moment some earnest German playwright, an adherent of Hochhuth's Theater of Fact, is researching an original play based upon the relevant documents. I suppose you might call "Futz!" nothing more than "Tobacco Road" gone to pot, but although it is certainly full of a rude an rustic gusto, Miss Owens's play presumably has a moral purpose.

    "Futz" Made Into Foggy Movie
Rochelle Owens's Play Loses in Transition
Ritual Element Strong in Film at Kips Bay
    by Roger Greenspun
The New York Times - November 17, 1969
Farmer Cyrus Futz loves his pig Amanda, and therefore he does disservice to the town tart, Marjorie Satz. Seeing Futz at backyard play, nutty Oscar Loop is moved to murder leather loving Ann Fox in a mad attempt to preserve the purity of the natural world. Loop must die, Marjorie must be avenged, and Futz must have his happy home life drowned in a ritual blood bath. The key word is neither "pig" nor "blood" nor even "bath." The key word is "ritual." Rochelle Owens's modestly pleasant closet drama, though weak on structure, is strong on magical associations, and it implicated its hapless hayseeds, with the great god Zeus, the dancing Siva and the rhythmic return of the seasons and the sun. Given all this, you may sense that "Futz" is more fun to think about than to read. I can assure you that it is infinitely more fun to read than to see in Tom O'Horgan's movie version, which opened yesterday at the Kips Bay Theater. O'Horgan has rituals of his own in mind. If his movie, photographed in Stockton, Calif., but cast with the La Mama Troupe and such celebrated local yokels as Jane Holzer and Sally Kirkland, comes out looking like animated Thomas Hart Benton, we must assume that Thomas Hart Benton was really his intention. O'Horgan's rural America, although visual as all get out, is really no more particularized than Miss Owens's. Both of them seem to believe that nature imitates art. And if it doesn't, both are willing to push a good deal until it does.

The journey from poet to critic to novelist has been a very intertwined one for Rochelle Ratner. It begins shortly after she moved to New York, when she wrote two poetry columns for the soon-to-be-defunct East Village Other , and continues to the present day where she's Executive Editor of American Book Review , a magazine she's been associated with since 1978, and reviews several poetry books a year for Library Journal Had her editor at Soho Weekly News (where she wrote a regular poetry column from 1975 to 1982) not encouraged her to review some of the more "poetic" novels, she probably wouldn't have begun writing fiction herself. Other highlights of her reviewing career include serving on the National Book Critics Circle board of directors for six years (where she also edited the NBCC Newsletter and chaired the Poetry and Reviewer's Citation committees), writing a monthly small press column for Library Journal , and working as a regular poetry reviewer for Publishers Weekly from 1989-1997.

by Marjorie Perloff In 1919, Marcel Duchamp bought on the rue de Rivoli, a cheap postcard reproduction of the Mona Lisa and decided to give Leonardo’s famous enigmatic face a black-penciled mustache, curling up at the corners, and a neat small goatee. Underneath the portrait, Duchamp inscribed the letters L.H.O.O.Q , a sequence which, read aloud in French, equals elle a chaud au cul (she has a hot ass). But his was not just a crude joke; as he explained it many years later, “The curious thing about that moustache and goatee is that when you look at the Mona Lisa it becomes a man.  It is not a woman disguised as a man; it is a real man, and that was my discovery, without realizing it at the time.”  Here Duchamp implies playfully what Freud, in his famous study of Leonardo da Vinci, took very seriously—namely the artist’s latent homosexuality. In both cases, the model herself (a local merchant’s wife) is seen as mere object—“the occasion for these ruses,” to use Frank O’Hara’s phrase in “In Memory of my Feelings.” And of course art historians have taken this object status as given: Ernst Gombrich, for example, argues that the universal appeal of the Mona Lisa’s enigmatic smile may be attributed to “Leonardo’s famous invention which the Italians call
