e-mail this article An OK Corral At Best O n a cold October day in 1888, the Arizona sky heavy with impending snow, three lawman brothers and their gambler friend faced off against five alleged cattle rustlers in an alley while the mining town of Tombstone held its breath. Less than a minute later, three men were dead, three wounded, and an American myth was born. My Darling Clementin e with Henry Fonda, Gunfight at the OK Corral with Burt Lancaster, Tombstone with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, and Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner. The last two films on the list, however, followed a trend of revisionist (or rather, clarifying) historicism that suggested that the principals in the feud, particularly Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, were not the simon-pure figures portrayed in earlier treatments. Simply put, the era of the white-hat/black-hat western is long dead, and the themes of the Earp-Clanton affair have shifted to focus on the loyalties between men on a harsh frontier with inadequate and often corrupt law-enforcement. Gunman's Rhapsody , the Earp-Clanton saga is "the book he always longed to write." So okay, if we're going to go down to Tombstone one more time, we could not be in better hands than Parker's.

A better-than-average outing for Robert B. Parker, centered on an unusual type of crime. Spenser is hired by the president of an eastern university to investigate allegations that its very successful basketball team is engaged in point-shaving. Games are not being intentionally lost, but they are not being won as decisively as they could be, so that it is possible to consistently win by betting on the point spread. Spenser fairly quickly identifies the guilty player, who is being manipulated by mobsters. He then faces a quandary: how to get rid of the gangsters without exposing the kid and ruining his professional basketball career? His resolution of the problem is clever and satisfying. Parker is a matter of taste his mysteries are very direct, often funny, and many find the hard-boiled Spenser character appealing. Often he makes the simplicity of his books a virtue; and from the wide margins, large type, frequent chapter breaks, and reliance on dialogue, it is clear that Robert B. knows that he is paid by the book rather than by the word. On the downside, Parker makes sure that we know about Spenser's life in greater detail than some readers are interested in. Spenser's romance with Susan Silverman is less emphasized in this book than in some, but otherwise the mundaneness of some of the descriptions are really striking:

A fter being thrown out of the LAPD for drinking on the job, newly divorced homicide detective Jesse Stone is surprised to be hired as the police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts. But when he shows up in town, he realizes that his new post is not the sinecure he imagined. The seemingly tranquil hamlet harbors a militia, a violent muscleman with mob connections, and a thriving trade in money laundering among other secrets. Perishing Twice with Robert B. Parker
Robert B Parker I haven't much to say about my most recent book, Perish Twice, which No Exit Press are publishing in the UK, except that it is really good, and currently for sale (with a dandy picture of me on the back). As for influences, I suppose Raymond Chandler would be the most telling. Though in my formative years I read a ton of pulp magazines (Black Mask, Dime Detective, etc.). I am currently rereading all of Rex Stout and liking it very much (again). On the other hand I have a PhD in English Language and Literature and was, among many other things, a professor of English, and have in the service of those conditions probably read everything since the invention of moveable type. Surely Hemingway and Faulkner and Scott Fitzgerald have seeped in, too. I have no unpublished work. The first thing I wrote, Godwulf Manuscript, was published by the first publisher I sent it to. I know that's annoying, but what can I do? As for my peers (if any), I never miss Elmore Leonard. Other than that I don't read much fiction any more. I tend to look at it like carpenters look at houses and it distracts me. I read some non-fiction. I recently read Jonathan Lear's Open Minded (Freud and the classical philosophers), and am currently reading Rembrandt's Eyes by Simon Schama. I don't understand any of it, of course, but it makes for such a good answer to the what-are-you-reading-these-days question.

I missed a Spenser regular, the redoubtable Hawk, who is in France during the events of this book, but the local sheriff provides a good bantering partner for Spenser. He spills enough for Spenser to pursue the facts, but not enough to have it come back to him. I paid a little more at Posner’s Bookstore in Grand Central Station to get a signed copy. Ausbruch in Serie

Surely, a large part of the success of Robert B. Parker's 30-year-old Spenser series is that its male leads—the title character, who is a private detective, and his intimidating sidekick, Hawk—offer some of the best smart-ass humor around. "Spenser says the things you wish you'd said the next day, without a fear of repercussion," Parker says. "He doesn't care if he gets fired, he's not intimidated by force, not manipulatable by sex. I'm sure everyone would like to have the grand putdown that I thought up at my leisure." Parker's comfortable status as a bestseller in crime fiction is also due to his dependability: Buy a Parker novel and you're largely assured of a strong story line, tight writing and sharp dialogue. A New York Times reviewer said of the Spenser books, "We are witnessing one of the great series in the history of the American detective story." Last year, Parker was named Grand Master by The Mystery Writers of America. Credits: More than 40 books, including

Trouble In Paradise
by Robert B. Parker
Parker's Spenser Turns To Stone In Paradise Readers might expect that authors who write science fiction or fantasy live outlandish lives or pursue dreams that make Howard Hughes appear as a bastion of middle class stability. Spider Robinson, disciple of Heinlein and Ben Bova, dismisses the notion in his short story, Melancholy Elephants , when his protagonist defines the development of both genres as “…a small group of writers, desperate for something new to write about, for a new story to tell…” after the mainstream abandoned the Novel of Ideas post-Henry James and the Novel of Character a century later.
But, lordy, those detective boys sure live in interesting times.
Chief among the detective storywriters with what one might politely term eccentricities is Edgar Allen Poe, the troubled soul who brought The Raven and suspenseful stories to light. Poe is widely credited with creating the modern detective story. Cramming decades more of life into his forty corporeal years, Poe battled alcoholism and the societal mores he violated upon marrying his thirteen year old cousin.
The father of Bogie’s Sam Spade and perhaps the twentieth century’s top detective storyteller, Dashiell Hammett, died penniless in New York in 1961. Hammett’s writing chops were never questioned, but he was swept up in McCarthyism run rampant in the 1950s, and as a Communist party member for more than a decade, made a perfect target for the witch hunts that plagued America’s artistic community.

'Shrink Rap' by Robert B. Parker Parker's latest Sunny Randall mystery is a gripping read Sunday, August 25, 2002 By Robert Croan, Post-Gazette Senior Editor Shrink Rap By Robert B. Parker Putnam
Robert B. Parker invented private detective Sunny Randall three years ago, when it seemed that his Spenser novels were on the wane and female sleuths were very much the rage. As it happens, Spenser is alive and well today, co-existing in the world of fiction with his female counterpart and one or two other fictional heroes, too. Randall and Spenser have a lot in common beyond their shared Boston milieu. She’s a cultured tough girl; Spenser is a self-educated macho man who cooks magnificently and has a heart of gold. She has an ex-husband, Richie (whose family happens to be “connected”), and a miniature English bull terrier, Rosie, whom they still share; Spenser’s part-time pooch belongs to his psychotherapist girlfriend, Susan.

'Sudden Mischief' by Robert B. Parker Latest On Spenser: Heavy On Character, Light On Plot Sunday, April 05, 1998 By Robert Croan, Post-Gazette Music Critic Sudden Mischief By Robert B. Parker
This time, the plot's only OK and the mystery element all but nonexistent, but Robert B. Parker's written so many Spenser novels, it must be getting harder to make each one fresh and different. All this doesn't mean that "Sudden Mischief isn't a fun read. For anyone who may not know by now from the books and TV series, Spenser is a super-macho man - a private eye who can take on any two or three adversaries at once, and win - unless they're holding a gun to his head. Or, as occurs at one point in the present tale, to the head of his girlfriend, the beautiful and affluent Boston psychotherapist, Susan Silverman. Spenser is more than a mere macho man, however. He's sensitive, smart and literate, due to a few quirks in his upbringing.

Juggling three different mystery series is bound to take its toll, even on one of the acknowledged heavyweights of the genre. And so it is that with Shrink Rap , Robert B. Parker's third novel centering on female Boston P.I. Sunny Randall, Parker returns to overly familiar thematic waters. Randall, an engaging and likable character despite Parker's sometimes self-conscious attempts to write in how he perceives a female's point of view, isn't exactly Spenser (Parker's longtime alter ego) in a skirt, but she exhibits personality traits familiar to fans of Parker's other work. She's trapped in a codependent, ambiguous relationship with her former spouse much like Jesse Stone of Death in Paradise . She has serious issues about her mother (moms never come off well in Parker novels, particularly
