index essays reviews Before, during and ever after I am attracted to stories of the aftermath. At the end of adventure movies I want to know, for instance, what happened after the astronauts make it back to Earth, or the killer is caught, or the girl is finally got. I find the peace at the end of, say, "Event Horizon", deeply frustrating. The credits run and immediately I feel the need to inhabit the silence and apparent serenity of the surviving characters. Even in a poor film. Instinctively, I ask: what are the characters thinking now? How will the events affect the rest of their lives? How will they "come to terms" with what has happened? How will they tell the story to their friends? Despite the insistence of these questions - does anybody else ask them? - we don't seem to want to know the answers. I mean, we never see films about them. We want only action. Such indifference suggests a deep-seated pathological fear at the heart of popular culture. It's not like we are all Odysseus, shedding experience like some fancy-dress outfit. Experience makes us who we are. We are stuck with responses, memories and responses to memories. I suppose we watch films like "Event Horizon" to displace them for a while. When that film began, I knew my questions would not be answered. At that point, the roller coaster profile of the usual Hollywood movie prompted only weariness, not anticipation. Nevertheless, it was watched and time was passed pleasurably. Of course, its predictability was part of the pleasure. The thing is, I wanted that predictability to be taken to the absolute limit. But what does this mean in practice? Maybe it's where time stands still and the whole picture appears, as in the uncanny vertigo you feel when you catch your own eye looking at itself in the mirror. You know you are looking at yourself - what could be more familiar? - yet there is also a sense of something alien. It disappears as soon as you notice it. The absolute limit, then, would be the noticing and the disappearance combined. So what would that be like? Well, Tim Parks' novel "Destiny" is a good start. It is an exhilarating experience of vertigo.

Introduction: Tim Parks' Lender Politics Tim Parks is a British author and translator. He has published ten novels and half a dozen works of non-fiction, and translated numerous works from the Italian. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books
On 27 March 2002 an opinion-piece by him, Lender Politics , was published in The Guardian . The sub-title of the piece proclaims: More books are borrowed from libraries than bought in shops and that means authors are short-changed. Isn't it time for a new system ? Parks writes a number of things about British libraries and the library system before he gets around to this, but the purpose of the piece does seem to be to call attention to this situation. Parks finds that "books are more frequently lent by libraries than sold in shops (to the ratio of 3-1 in my case)", and that "a novel is particularly heavily borrowed in the first year of its life when it is getting some coverage in the press" From this he concludes that: not only do libraries encourage a cosy self-righteousness about the value of reading, any reading, but they also make the already difficult economics of publishing books, particularly those that don't easily pay their way into the recommended-titles shelves, even more arduous

Alltec Skateparks Inc.
With the combined experience of over 25 years of skating, we realized the great need for professionally built skate parks, designed and constructed by professional skaters. We have skated on one-too-many parks designed with no skater experience. Accordingly, we have witnessed the recurring abandonment of these parks over time. "If only they would have done this... If only they would have done that..." We would say, "then everyone would still be skating here with ear to ear grins." There was a niche that needed to be filled, and A.S.I was born to fill that niche Alltec Skateparks Inc. (A.S.I.) is an organization that designs and builds world-class skate parks. The core of A.S.I consists of pro-skaters, integrated with specialized engineers, architects, and concrete workers. Together we create parks that are popular and timeless A.S.I is designed to be highly compatible with community governments, complete with incorporation, liability insurance, digital engineering, proper licenses, and the skills and experience to facilitate the communication of local interest groups. Mission Statement Skating is a positive, energetic, and creative outlet that pushes personal boundaries and can assist in promoting healthy development of today's youth. It is the goal of A.S.I. to provide world-class skate parks for communities, where skaters of all levels can have a special space to grow. We strive to empower the youth by including them in the creation process, and it is our hope that they will continue to involve themselves in the community in positive ways. The parks that we design and build merge creativity, experience, and science. The end result is a skate park that will endlessly challenge and inspire skaters of all levels.

Tim Park's latest novel
Destiny never made the Booker short-list. But this novel about marriage, mental illness, national identity, obsession and so much more deserves to be read whatever the prize-givers think. I seem to remember Tim Parks in a Culture Wars debate at the Edinburgh Festival stating that - from the point of view of deciding whether a book is worth reading - critics and reviews were unnecessary. Parks suggested that reading the first page was a better way of making these decisions. Destiny deserves to be recommended, but it doesn't really need any help. It recommends itself. Fenno Outen Tim Parks... On controversy I think with this one I am a bit safer from public attack - that wasn't my plan but just because of the things that happen. A lot of people with Europa felt it was just a guy whining about his love life going wrong - won't be any problem with latest. On relationships "The books that I've tried to do have always been about people whose projects for each other tend to go wrong. While people are together for their intimacy and attraction and so on, they're very distant at some level and they never know what's going on in each other's head. Sometimes one person's project for another person can lead to disaster. In Loving Roger this girl imagines she's involved in a love affair which will lead to family and everything else. The guy has a completely different project for himself - but is sufficiently seduced by her vision of life not to be able to leave her. So you've got one of those terrible situations where people have different projects but won't leave each other".

The European Connection, 23 - 28 November 1998 Berlin Cologne Hamburg Amsterdam ... Writers Tim Parks N W Home Born in Manchester in 1954, Tim Parks moved to Italy in 1980 where he has written nine novels and three works of non-fiction, all of which have received enthusiastic critical acclaim. The earliest novels featured compelling first person narratives, Tongues Of Flame (1985) telling the story of a boy caught up in a family exorcism and Loving Roger (1986) introducing us to the mind of a young woman who has just murdered her boyfriend. Both won prestigious prizes. With increasing technical confidence, the next work goes on to explore that condition of intimacy and distance in which we all live with one another. In Home Thoughts Family Planning (1989) shows a group of siblings challenged by that most intractable of conditions, madness. Admirably, Parks packs these desolate tales with comedy. Of Goodness Shear (1993) a geologist instructed to examine a quarry on a Mediterranean island takes advantage of the situation to bring along a young mistress. Determined to see his personal crisis in impersonal technical terms, he does nothing but colour the landscape with his existential anguish. Short-listed for the Booker Prize
