Francesco Petrarca P Petrarca escribió en latín e italiano. Entre sus obras en latín destacan África (1342), un poema épico sobre el conquistador romano clásico Escipión el Africano, y De viris illustribus (1338), una serie de biografías de personajes ilustres. También en latín escribió églogas y epístolas en verso, el diálogo Secretum (1343), y el tratado De vita solitaria (1356), en el cual defendía una "vida solitaria", dedicada a la naturaleza, el estudio y la oración. Su amplia colección de cartas ha resultado muy útil por la cantidad de detalles históricos y biográficos que contienen. La más famosa de sus obras es una colección de poemas en italiano titulada Rime in vita e morta di Madonna Laura (posterior a 1327), y que después fue ampliada a lo largo de su vida y se conoce como Cancionero . Es una colección de sonetos y odas, inspirados casi todos ellos en su amor no correspondido por Laura, y reflejan a la perfección el carácter del poeta y de su pasión amorosa en un italiano vernáculo extremadamente melodioso y refinado. También en Laura se inspiró para componer otro conjunto de poemas, Triunfos (1352-1374), que detallan la elevación del alma humana desde el amor terrenal a su realización a través de Dios. Il Canzoniere del Petrarca consta di 366 poesie, tutte in volgare: 317 sonetti, 29 canzoni, 9 sestine, 7 ballate e 4 madrigali. La loro composizione prese all'autore diverso tempo: l'ideazione di una prima raccolta di poesie in volgare risaliva al 1336-1338 e diversi componimenti si aggiunsero negli anni a seguire finché, tra il '56 ed il '58, ci fu l'edizione di 215 poesie (Fragmentorum Liber) che divenne definitiva tra il '73 ed il '74. Tema centrale del Canzoniere è l'amore per Laura, musa ispiratrice del poeta, che divide la raccolta in due parti: in vita (263 poesie) ed in morte (103 poesie) di lei. Cenni biografici Nacque ad Arezzo nel 1304 da Ser Petracco, un notaio fiorentino che faceva parte del gruppo dei Bianchi, esiliato come Dante nel 1302 in seguito alla vittoria dei Neri, e da Eletta Canigiani. Nel 1312 il padre si trasferì ad Avignone (lavorava presso la corte Pontificia) e collocò moglie e figli a Carpentras, dove Francesco Petrarca cominciò a studiare guidato da Convenevole da Prato. Seguì, insieme al fratello Gherardo gli studi giuridici (iniziati a Montpellier nel 1316 e conclusi a Bologna tra il 1320 e il 1326). Tornato a Avignone dopo la morte del padre, frequentò il mondo elegante della città. Qui, il 6 aprile 1327, nella chiesa di Santa Chiara, vide per la prima volta la donna che amò per tutta la vita e a cui si ispira nelle sue opere poetiche in italiano: Laura, identificata tradizionalmente con una Laura di Noves, sposa del marchese Ugo di Sade.

Giuseppe Bonghi Biografia di Francesco Petrarca Francesco Petrarca nasce "in Arezzo a' dì 20 di luglio nel 1304, in lunedì, in sul principio del mattino" (Biagioni, 1821), in Borgo dell'Orio, che in seguito verrà popolarmente chiamato Borgo dell'Orto, dal notaio Petracco dell'Incisa di ser Parenzo e da Eletta Canigiani, che si erano rifugiati in quella città dopo il bando con cui nel 1302, lo stesso bando che costringe Dante all'esilio, li aveva colpiti la città di Firenze, in quanto, come Dante, era un guelfo bianco fiorentino. Vive dapprima all'Incisa Valdarno dal 1305 (nel viaggio per raggiungere questa località il piccolo Francesco rischia addirittura di annegare) dove nel 1307 nasce il fratello Gherardo, e poi a Pisa dal 1311, dove la famiglia si trova nuovamente riunita, e vi compie i primi studi. Nel 1312, viste svanire le speranze riposte nella discesa in Italia dell'imperatore Arrigo VII di Lussemburgo e perdurare le lotte fra Guelfi e Ghibellini, segue il padre, che si trasferisce ad Avignone forse su invito del cardinale da Prato, dove Clemente V aveva fissato la sede pontificia e presso la cui corte Petracco sperava di ottenere qualche incarico; tra il 1313 e il 1316 vive con la madre a Carpentras, dove studia latino con il maestro italiano Convenevole da Prato (altro Bianco in esilio) insieme a grammatica, retorica e dialettica. Refusing an offer to assume the rectorship of the Florentine Studio (or University) just established, he resumed his peregrinations, spending a good part of the time at Venice, and accompanied there for a while by Boccaccio and by Leo Pilatus, from whom both he and Boccaccio had hoped to gain some direct knowledge of Greek and its literature. The transfer of the pontifical Court back to Rome in 1367 filled him with unbounded joy. In spite of the magnitude of Petrarch's composition in Latin and the stress which he put upon it himself, his abiding fame is based upon his Italian verse, and this forms two notable compilations, the "Trionfi" and the "Canzoniere". The "Trionfi", written in terza rima , and making large use of the vision already put to so good stead by Dante , is allegorical and moral in its nature. In the "Trionfi" we have a triumphal procession in which there take part six leading allegorical figures: Love, Chastity, Death, Fame, Time, and Divinity. Chastity triumphs over its predecessor, and finally Divinity triumphs over them all and remains supreme, as the symbol of peace, eternal life, and the everlasting union of the poet with his beloved Laura. The "Canzoniere", the poet's masterpiece, and one of the imperishable monuments of the world's literature, was first put into shape by the author and made known by him under the title of "Rerum vulgarium fragmenta". Attempts have been made to identify her, but all that is known is that Petrarch met Laura in Avignon, where he had entered the household of an influential cardinal. She is generally believed to have been the 19-year-old wife of Hugues de Sade. Petrarch saw her first time in the church of Saint Claire. According to several modern scholars, it is possible that Laura was a fictional character. However, she was a more realistically presented female character than in the conventional songs of the troubadours or in the literature of courtly love. "In my youth I was blessed with an agile, active body, though not particularly strong; and while I cannot boast of being very handsome, I was good-looking enough in my younger days. I had a clear complexion, between light and dark, lively eyes, and for many years sharp vision, which, however, unexpectedly deserted me when I passed my sixtieth birthday, and forced me, reluctantly, to resort to the use of glasses. Although I had always been perfectly healthy, old age assailed me with its usual array of discomforts."
