Wanda Phipps WORKING NOTES by Wanda Phipps The morning poem is part of a series. Inspired by other writers who have done the same, I wrote a poem every morning upon waking. It lasted for a few months and I wound up with around 60 or so poems. I wanted to investigate the hypnogogic state, that weird and wonderful place that holds bits of dreams of the night before, recent and not so recent memories and subtle visions for the future. They ended up being documents of dailiness with more than a few surprising twists. In the other poem I suppose I did the same thing only in a fully awakened state (or the closest that most of us get to that). Like most of my poems they deal with desire, sensation, female energy and the visceral nature of language. TWO POEMS: Untitled morning poem #28 UNTITLED language is essentially
the same
under differences
people are essentially
ambiguous
my hands and feet
are always colder
than the rest
of my body
his hair
all over his body is very long and fine and energy is always separate ends of the same thing her pale toes were black with mud that night and i saw the lawn sprinklers on broadway water pedestrians

Moving
I'm moving
can't stay inside
a thought long enough
to look around
to pin it down
but it's okay
that's the lesson
anyway
It's moving let it go take the flow keep moving one sock looks black one looks blue from here slipping into other's lives like a tourist real concerns don't concern me now I'm living to learn each moment I'm moving fog covers 208 Italian lovers squirm a thick unease quivers around the edges of September bungy cord popped on my luggage carrier there's a white rocking chair in the maroon guest room just like the one I like to think my mother would have liked when she said she'd like a rocking chair this one has white cushions with pale gray polka dots, stripes and frilly edges my mother died because she was poor it all keeps moving he says open up butterfly when we make love I look like his old love he looks like mine he helps me remember the days when every step was a mystery now my ankles ache I'm moving through it he watches a stripper as if she was a rock star queen of glamour he calls me love goddess and I dance in a warehouse at midnite after losing my clothes want to let it all go but can't throw away this yearning to know what it is this moment this now just know I'm moving there's a fugitive puppy camped out on the couch and baby's brought a stop sign home stillness runs through this rushing to do nothing and I pray to know it to hold it hold onto it but it's all moving I keep moving but it's okay that's the lesson anyway it's all moving let it go

Interview Part One Gary Sullivan: Let's start with the series of yours I'm most familiar with, the "Morning Poems." The collection of these you've sent along goes from "Morning Poem #1 - 9/15" to "Morning Poem #66 - 11/16." I'm assuming, given that, that this is one of those Bernadette Mayer-type of extended-period experiments, where you've set up a series of parameters (write something each day, right after you've woken up, or maybe prior to 12:00 noon, etc.), and what we have, now, is the result of that? I'm wondering if you could talk about the process of putting these poems together, how they were generated, and what you discovered, what was revealed to you, as you went along. Wanda Phipps: Although I have been greatly influenced by Bernadette Mayer's work and have studied with her, the "Morning Poems" series wasn't inspired by a Bernadette Mayer experiment at all but by some of Mitch Highfill's poems in his book

This piece was presented as a work-in-progress for The Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church in November 1991 and opened at La Mama in January 1992. Their translation of one of the poems, Natalka Bilotserkivets’s "May," was published by Boston

The Gentle Cacophony of Edwin Torres
by Wanda Phipps
Edwin Torres is a tall, thin, spectacled, goateed poet who has cast his spell over many Downtown poetry and performance hotspots. Whether working with dancers, conducting musicians and poets in his "Poet's Neurotica" evenings or performing solo, he always creates an intensely explosive yet playful atmosphere by orchestrating lush, luxurious sound. His deep melodious voice forages through rounded vowels, chopped syllables, and stretched whispers.
He's been found practicing his alchemy at the Poetry Project, Dixon Place, P.S. 122 and the Performing Garage. Recently, he represented New York City in the National Poetry Slam in Boston. This Po-Mo griot also won the Nuyorican Poets Cafe's First Annual Prize for Fresh Poetry and is the author of I Hear Things People Haven't Really Said
New York Press
pronounced him Best Performing Poet this year saying: "Torres has become magnificent...innovative and refined. His bent for soul bending language play is without equal." Ethan Petitt of Nose Magazine says "instead of 'sounding things', he 'things' sounds, so that words and meanings go ka-plunk like soft percussion."

Interview [This interview began by email in the summer of 2000. At some point, frustrated with the slowness of the exchange, we decided to meet up at a café in Brooklyn and continue the interview verbally. Following this dialogue, Wanda sent along a few more emails in clarification of some of her verbal answers, and these have been incorporated into the present piece.] Part One Gary Sullivan: Let's start with the series of yours I'm most familiar with, the "Morning Poems."
