JERSEY RAIN
Now near the end of the middle stretch of road
What have I learned? Some earthly wiles. An art. That often I cannot tell good fortune from bad, That once had seemed so easy to tell apart. The source of art and woe aslant in wind Dissolves or nourishes everything it touches. What roadbank gullies and ruts it doesn't mend It carves the deeper, boiling tawny in ditches. It spends itself regardless into the ocean. It stains and scours and makes things dark or bright: Sweat of the moon, a shroud of benediction, The chilly liquefaction of day to night, The Jersey rain, my rain, soaks all as one: It smites Metuchen, Rahway, Saddle River, Fair Haven, Newark, Little Silver, Bayonne. I feel it churning even in fair weather To craze distinction, dry the same as wet. In ripples of heat the August drought still feeds Vapors in the sky that swell to smite the state The Jersey rain, my rain, in streams and beads

In Image and Text, No. 2 in the Occasional Papers series, poet Robert Pinsky and artist Michael Mazur discuss their collaboration in producing, as translator and illustrator respectively, the most recent translation of Dante's Inferno. The dialogue turns into a lively consideration of writing, hearing, and seeing texts. Pinsky and Mazur begin by discussing the history of their involvement, both individually and collectively, with Dante. Michael Mazur in particular relates how he first experienced Dante while living in Florence as an art student in the 1950s. The discussion alternates with passages from the Inferno and the accompanying illustrations, reproduced in whole or in detail in Image and Text. The two speakers discuss how the process of illustration and the process of translation often progressed simultaneously for years, sometimes involving deeply appreciative communication between the two, and, sometimes, frank discussions of one-another's attempts to re-render this monumental work in English. The volume includes some of the unpublished illustrations that were not selected for publication in the final volume, and also contains some sources for the monotypes that Michael Mazur produced for this translation. Likewise, Robert Pinsky discusses some of the methods he used to translate the poem, and the qualities of Dante's poetry that make him both technically interesting and thematically immediate to many generations.

Pinsky: U.S. a great nation, but still engaged in becoming a great people This is a transcription of the speech by U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, Commencement speaker, on June 13, 1999. I'll start in the formal traditional way by addressing President Casper and Provost Rice, the trustees and faculty, the honored guests, the graduates and their families and their guests. Thanks a lot for inviting me to come here. I really appreciate it. I call attention to the formality of the traditional beginning of this kind of speech, because one of the things I want to talk to you about today is the question: What are we doing here? Related Information: By comparison, other secular rituals, like the inauguration of an American president, for example, or the ceremonies of becoming an American citizen, get accomplished with a kind of quick, understated simplicity, more like getting a driver's license than our ceremonies today. Why do we mark these occasions with such intense degrees of, as the song title is, "Pomp and Circumstance"?
