Dramatic Silences and Eloquences in Pinter and Stoppard
REVIEW: Çikigil provides a study of language in plays by Pinter and Stoppard. She includes specific reference to The Caretaker, The Real Thing, The House of Cards. The paper looks at the inability of humans to communicate with language in these texts, language and power, 'proper' writing, strategies of communication. There is a short, somewhat dated bibliography. This paper is part of the 'Cultural Studies Study Group' website - no address, personal or institutional details provided, nor reason for on-line publication.

Harold Pinter.org
REVIEW: This site suffers from a daunting main page overloaded 'real-estate' and little 'whitespace'. The font size is too small throughout the site and, overall, the style of presentation lacks focus and energy. The identities of the creators are not immediately obvious and this makes the content questionable, particularly given the many links to commercial theatres. In terms of content Haroldpinter.org is well researched and divided into relevant sub-sections. The breadth of material perhaps explains the lack of depth - this seems to be a site created from sound bites rather than a depth of argument or discussion. This is most noticeable in the 'Politics' section where Pinter's interests are listed as if merely a series of plays or performances and without the urgency of commitment they perhaps demand.

Pinter, Harold (1930- ), English playwright, known for his so-called comedies of menace, which humorously and cynically depict people attempting to communicate as they react to an invasion or threat of an invasion of their lives. The Hero As The Victim in Harold Pinter's Plays Ankara University
The rituals of victimisation executed for millions of years we have written sources about the Mayas, Incas, Hittites, Sumers, the ancient Greeks and Turks and about many tribes all over the world, and also the four holy books - show us that the victim is holy and his/her victimisation brings vitality, holiness, peace to the community and to the soil. Thus, victimisation rituals have had a religious and social importance.
In this sacred grove (of Nemi), in the sanctuary of Diana, there grew a certain tree round which at any time of the day, and probably far into the night, a grim figure might be seen to prowl. In his hand he carried a drawn sword, and he kept peering warily about him as if at every instant he expected to be set upon by an enemy. He was a priest and a murderer: and the man for whom he looked was sooner or later to murder him and hold the priesthood in his stead. Such was the rule of sanctuary. A candidate for the priesthood could only succeed to office by slaying the priest, and having slain him, he retained office till he was himself slain by a stronger, or a craftier (person) (Frazer 1).
Mythologies are full of succession stories. The killing of the divine king is the most impressing. Frazer writes:

    Landscape and Silence
American Premiere of two new one-act plays
    by Harold Pinter
The Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center
    Forum Theater, 1970
    The Forum
Landscape and Silence are Harold Pinter's newest and most experimental plays. They compress a vision and a theatrical style unique to the Western stage. Silence is both a theme and a stage technique. Pinter has said: There are two silences. One when no word is spoken. The other when perhaps a torrent of language is employed. This speech is speaking a language locked beneath it. That is its continual reference. The speech we hear is an indication of what we don't hear. It is a necessary avoidance, a violent, sly, anguished or mocking smokescreen which keeps the other in its place. When true silence falls, we are still left with echo but are nearer nakedness. One way of looking at speech is to say it is a constant stratagem to cover nakedness. The Forum was designed to stimulate experiment and to stretch the company's range. In seeking new forms of theatrical expression, The Repertory Theater is proud to present the American premiere of these two new one-act plays
