... Tamise van Pelt ). Unable to negotiate a truce between the world and her sensitivities, Plath committed suicide in 1963. She left behind two children and an estranged husband, British poet, Ted Hughes. Plath's Collected Poems published in 1981 won a Pulitzer Prize. Her Journals were published in 1982. These publications and numerous academic and biographical studies have helped maintain an on-going fascination with Plath's short and tragic life and work. Interest in Plath continues to grow and may crest shortly. Ted Hughes, who became England's poet laureate in 1984, published Birthday Poems shortly before his death in 1998 . Long silent on the details of his relationship with Plath, the poems in the new book are mostly a meditation on that subject. Film producer Alison Owen is reportedly making starring Gwynneth Paltrow as the star-crossed Sylvia. Precocious and very highly strung (the two characteristics commonly travel together), Plath probed her female soul within the context she found herself in: the United States in the middle of the 20th century. Confused and critical of the differing standards for men and women in the arts and in society, Plath's introspective and perilous battle is a lesson for today as we start across this so-called bridge to the 21st century. Plath fell into the gap before the bridge was built. She is an early warning of our age's great disruption: the fear of the not forever.

What factors, components, and stages of Esther Greenwood's descent into depression and madness are specified? How inevitable is that descent?
In a letter while at college, Plath wrote that "I've gone around for most of my life as in the rarefied atmosphere under a bell jar." Is this the primary meaning of the novel's titular bell jar? What other meanings does "the bell jar" have? What terms does Esther use to describe herself? How does she compare or contrast herself with Doreen and others in New York City, or with Joan and other patients in the hospital? What instances and images of distortion occur in the novel? What are their contexts and significance? Does Esther achieve a clear, undistorted view of herself? Are Esther's attitudes toward men, sex, and marriage peculiar to herself? What role do her attitudes play in her breakdown? What are we told about her society's expectations regarding men and women, sexuality, and relationships? Have those expectations changed since that time? Esther more than once admits to feelings of inadequacy. Is Esther's sense of her own inadequacies consistent with reality? Against what standards does she judge herself?

    Portrait Silvia Plath
    amerikanische Schriftstellerin
geboren in Boston am 27. Oktober 1932
gestorben in London ( Selbstmord ) in London am 11. Februar 1963

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students usually begin with the fact that Plath committed suicide and then read her death as some kind of "warning" to talented, ambitious women writers. (The recent biography by Stevenson only supports this view, unfortunately.) What must be done is to get to the text, in each case, and read for nuance of meaninghumor, anger, poignance, intellectual tour de force. Running parallel with this sense of Plath as some inhuman persona is a fearful acknowledgment that women who have ambition are not quite normal. Plath receives a very gender-based reading. A good corrective is to talk about people who have tendencies toward depression, a situation that affects men as well as women. Focus on the text and ready information about the possible biographical influence on that text. Often, however, the influences are largely literaryMedea is as close a persona for some of the late poems as Plath herself T. S. Eliot

The air is a mill of hooks- Questions without answer, Glittering and drunk as flies Whose kiss stings unbearably In the fetid wombs of black air under pines in summer. I remember The dead smell of sun on wood cabins, The stiffness of sails, the long salt winding sheets. Once one has seen God, what is the remedy? Once one has been seized up Without a part left over, Not a toe, not a finger, and used, Used utterly, in the sun’s conflagrations, the stains That lengthen from ancient cathedrals What is the remedy? The pill of the Communion tablet, The walking beside still water? Memory? Or picking up the bright pieces Of Christ in the faces of rodents, The tame flower-nibblers, the ones Whose hopes are so low they are comfortable- The humpback in his small, washed cottage Under the spokes of the clematis. Is there no great love, only tenderness? Does the sea Remember the walker upon it?
