Reading George Plimpton's new book on Truman Capote Truman Capote, In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career feels like being at a fabulous cocktail party, where the champagne is flowing and the gossip is juicy. Truman brought together the worlds of literature, politics, money, art, fashion, media, and film; in short, he was a locus of celebrity. Written as an "oral biography," the book is about as much fun as one can have between the pages of a book.
For this issue of Bold Type, we feature Truman Capote's Black and White Ball. An excerpt describes what it was like to have attended, told by those envied few who were invited. Look through a gallery of photos from the still-legendary event and check out an interview with author and participatory journalist George Plimpton.

Title: A SPORTS BESTIARY Description: New York: McGraw-Hill, 1982. First edition. Quarto, x + 101pp. With many full-page drawings by Arnold Roth. Very good in slightly soiled and torn dustjacket. Item # Add to your cart Please read book descriptions carefully. I write descriptions accurately, with a slight bias toward overdescribing faults, if any exist, so that you will know exactly what you are buying. I ship books anywhere, at approximate cost, which depends on weight, destination and means of shipping. In the U.S., books are normally sent via Priority mail, with insurance added for books over $50 in value. This charge is added to the cost of the book, and, in Connecticut, a 6% sales tax is added to the total. If you live in another country, please specify air or surface shipping. I can then quote postage costs. Books may be returned within a week of arrival for any reason. Shipping costs are not refundable unless the book is not as described. This site is powered by

1966: In Which TC Decides to Give His Black-and-White Ball
    JOHN KNOWLES
Don't you think Truman sat there in Monroeville Alabama, when he was about ten, deeply rejected and out of it, strange little outcast, even in his own house, and said that someday he would hire the most beautiful ballroom in New York City and he would have the most elegant and famous people in the world there?
    LEO LERMAN
The ball was one of his major works. As much a major work as some of his short stories. He sat there planning it all summer long. I came back from somewhere to find him surrounded by these notebooks. I wondered what work is he writing? It turned out to be this ball. One of the things he adored saying was "Well, maybe you'll be invited and maybe you won't." He'd say things like "Well, are we going to have so-and-so?" Then he'd make little notes. He had the most marvelous time doing it. It was his reward for all those years he kept for himself. It was ostensibly for Kay Graham. It was for Truman.
    DOMINICK DUNNE
Two years before Truman's ball, on my tenth wedding anniversary, my wife, Lenny, and I gave a black-and-white ball where the ladies were asked to dress in black and white. We had a policy that no one could bring houseguests or anything because there was just limited space. At the last minute Truman called and said, "Yes, yes, I'm coming, I'm going to be there, but I'm bringing three guests." Well, we didn't have the nerve to say to him, "Well, you can't bring them." They turned out to be Alvin Dewey, the FBI agent, his wife, and a third person involved in the

Thoroughly educated, first at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, then at Harvard University where he majored in English and edited the Harvard Lampoon , he has actually lived the lives of the people he writes about, even if only briefly. He served as a tank driver in Italy for the U.S. Army from 1945 through 1948, attended King's College at Cambridge University in England, and founded The Paris Review with two friends, becoming its editor-in-chief in 1953. He devoted the magazine to finding unknown authors and including interviews with noted authors, notably one with Ernest Hemingway that Plimpton conducted himself. His publications include collections of his interviews with famous authors, as well as witty and urbane descriptions of his less-than-stellar exploits on the athletic field (originally written as a series of features for Sports Illustrated ). In 1963, he joined the Detroit Lions football team, an experience captured in his popular book

TIME Great Images America Online Transcript from June 14, 1999 Timehost : Hello everyone. Welcome to our TIME chat tonight. We're very pleased to be joined by writer/editor/actor/and Renaissance man George Plimpton. He's just written an article for the TIME 100 about Muhammad Ali . Welcome, Mr. Plimpton! George Plimpton : Thank you very much. It's a pleasure to be talking to those who want to hear what I have to offer about Muhammad Ali. Timehost : Before we start, I'd just like to ask about how you came to write the article about Ali. George Plimpton : Well, I was asked to by the editors of TIME. I had written a book on boxing called "Shadow Box," which was largely about Muhammad Ali since I was a second-string boxing writer for Sports Illustrated. The first string writer was Mark Kram, a interesting name since it's the same backwards as forwards. He was unable to fly on planes, had a phobia about that, so I was sent to a number of fights overseas which he could not get to . The Frazier-Forman fight in Jamaica, and most particularly, the fight in Zaire, "The Rumble in the Jumble," as it was called between Ali and Forman. I covered many of Muhammad Ali's fights, including those he fought under the name Cassius Clay, and indeed the fight in which he won the world championship against Liston in Miami. So after all this, the TIME editors thought I could produce 700 words on the champ.

    By DOUG BLACKBURN Staff writer
First published: Thursday, May 6, 1999 Literary lion George Plimpton will discuss participatory journalism at UAlbany today George Plimpton seems a bit out of sorts, answering the door of the four-story townhouse at 11 a.m. Tuesday. He is barefoot, a pin-striped blue-and-white shirt hanging over bluejeans, his white hair toussled. He shows his visitors to a sitting room dominated by a large, faded-felt pool table and windows overlooking tugboats and barges on the East River. Roosevelt Island seems to be a 5-iron shot away, and cars whiz by on the FDR Drive along the water. The floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in his Upper East Side Manhattan apartment are full. One of Plimpton's better-known books, "Bogey Man,'' about his adventures on the pro golf tour, catches the eye. Framed posters and black-and-white photos blanket the walls: Plimpton with Muhammad Ali, Plimpton standing behind men dressed up as Batman and Superman, Plimpton with Norman Mailer. He returns in moments, having put on socks and a cream-colored pullover, plops down in a large armchair and asks his visitors what they want to talk about. His voice, immediately recognizable from film roles and commercials, is more Brahmin than Big Apple, despite being born and raised in New York City. Perhaps it was four years at Harvard followed by two at King's College, Cambridge, that makes him sound like a member of William F. Buckley's family. Family man The spiral staircase to the second floor of his apartment is encased in mesh, a child safety device to protect his 4-year-old twin daughters, Laura and Olivia. Their twin red tricycles are tucked neatly in a corner. Plimpton had the girls at age 67, with his second wife, Sarah Plimpton.
