JOHN WILLIAM POLIDORI
John William Polidori (1795-1821) is one of the most tragic figures in the literary world. He was in the position to become one of the most influential writers of the Romantic period, and his writing could have launched him into eternal fame and immortality. Instead, through the malice of Lord Byron and his followers, his name has been all but obliterated. Phantasmagoriana, a collection of horror tales, Byron suggested that they each write a ghost story. Mary Godwin worked on a tale that would later evolve into Frankenstein (some of the medical and scientific ideas for Mary's novel were undoubtedly discussed with Polidori, though in her 1831 Introduction, she plays down the role of "poor Polidori"), Byron wrote (and quickly abandoned) a fragment of a story, whereas Polidori is remembered as having come up with a story about a skull-headed woman. However, Polidori, having taken detailed notes during the trip, used Byron's abandoned story as inspiration for his own tale: "The Vampyre - A Tale". Drawing on real-life vampire cases that had occurred only a century before in Europe, as well as on Byron's discarded fragment - although the mysterious character in Byron's piece was named Darvell - Polidori renamed his vampiric character "Lord Ruthven" as a snide in-joke: the name was originally used by Lady Caroline Lamb in her novel

The violent combatants of Polidori's novel display the vampire's victorious mastery of homosocial relations and [the victim's] failure to dodge homoerotic desire." BRUFFE , Kenneth A. John William Polidori’s “The Vampyre”
John William Polidori’s “The Vampyre” represents yet another sexual fear in Victorian culture: the fear of the ruin of a young girl. At a time when marriage held great promise for the future for young people, and sexual repression was key, many people feared that their daughters or sister would be ruined by a man who would seduce them and then leave them. After an event like this, it was impossible for a girl to attain a marriage, and generally the only option for a girl like this was prostitution. The vampire Lord Strongmore is the representation of this fear. Her enters into London society and many of the girls desire his attention. After he leaves, the ones that he sought after revealed their sexuality to society, making them outcasts. In Italy, Aubrey discovers that Strongmore plans to ruin her supposed lover, and warns her family before leaving in disgust and fear. It is upon his return to London, however, that his fears about Strongmore are confirmed beyond a shadow of doubt. After a long illness that sets in when he sees Strongmore again, he learns that his sister is engaged to be married to Strongmore.

INTRODUCTION BACK TO MISCELLANY SHELF
Most people have heard of how Mary Shelley was moved to write Frankenstein by the tedium of a rain-soaked holiday in Switzerland in 1816. Her own preface tells how as Shelley’s teenage mistress she, Shelley and Byron passed time at the Villa Diodati by spooking each other with French and German horror stories. Then they each decided to write their own, of which hers was the only one to reach print. Less well known is that the same holiday effectively gave birth to the vampire in fiction. Byron’s unfinished idea was taken up by John Polidori, his doctor and fellow debauchee who was also on the holiday. Polidori’s novella The Vampyre appeared three years later, first in instalments in Colburn’s New Monthly Magazine and later as a complete volume on its own. Rather surprisingly, given the popularity of both vampires and Gothic fiction at the time, it appears to be the first real vampire story in prose and it was an immediate and roaring success.
John William Polidori Due to a misunderstanding the book was at first attributed to Byron, prompting the great Goethe to declare it his finest piece of writing. When the truth emerged, it sadly plummeted out of favour, in Britain at least, leading to Polidori's likely suicide; or at least the reckless abuse of drugs that killed him at the age of twenty six.
