Tomb of Pope Alexander (Chigi) VII
Marble and gilded bronze
Basilica di San Pietro, Vatican
This is the second monumental papal tomb in the San Pietro made by Bernini. It was commissioned by the Pope and executed after his death in 1667 by a large group of sculptors headed by Bernini. The composition is similar to that of the other (Urban VIII) tomb, however, there some differences. In contrast with the dominant figure of the Pope on the Urban tomb, the Pope here is a simple kneeling figure without any sign of his office. Instead of two there are four allegoric figures, Charity, Prudence, Justice and Truth. Below, there is a (real) door symbolizing the Gate of Death, from which a sand-glass holding skeleton (the Death) raises the heavy drapery. Pope Alexander IV Presenting Jacopo Pesaro to St Peter
Oil on canvas, 145 x 184 cm
Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp
This youthful work by the Venetian master, whose teacher, Giovanni Bellini, might have begun the canvas, refers to the capture of the island Santa Maura from the Turks by Spanish, Venetian and papal armies in 1502. Although it does not have the solidity and power of conviction of the mature Titian, the work is still a fascinating spectacle. The colours are rich, the pope and the bishop incline in a highly sculptural manner towards the saint, and the local tones and varying materials are early heralds of Titian's great oeuvre. Could he be lucid with regards to Church doctrines? Please let me know what you think. Thank you, Emilia.
Answer: [On Pope Alexander VI... Is he infallible ?] Hi Emilia,
Thanks for your question.
You seem to have a misunderstanding of what infallibility is.
It is not impeccability !!
That is it does not refer to the Pope's personal Holiness. Infallibility is a gift which protects the Pope from OFFICIALLY teaching defining error as truth
in the area of Faith and Morals. That does not mean that he himself will necessarily not violate the same truth he teaches. For instance in Acts 15, St. Peter definitively declares that Gentiles did
not have to keep the Kosher Laws or be circumcised in order to become Christians. Later we read in Galatians that he violates, at very least, the spirit of this infallible declaration.
St. Paul writes that he had to rebuke Peter for not eating at the same the table with gentiles

White marble medallion mounted on a bigio antico marble base
H: 35 in.; W: 17 in.; D: 13 in.; Diam: 13 in. 95.SA.9 Projecting from a white marble medallion , the face of the popular octogenarian Pope Alexander III looks out with informal candor. The medallion format, usually reserved for tomb monuments, here was chosen to represent a still-living figure. The pope wears a non-liturgical cap and cape usually worn for informal audiences. His smooth clothing contrasts with his sagging, aging flesh. This un-idealized, casual image is very rare in papal portraiture of the 1600s. Both the base and the double-headed eagle, symbol of the Pope's Ottoboni family, were carved from a single piece of bigio antico marble. The sculptor skillfully manipulated the color of the stone so that the white-and-gray veined portion comprised the base while the darker, black-and-gray part of the stone was used for the eagle. The sculpture was a gift from Cardinal Francesco Barberini, whom Alexander had made a cardinal in 1690.

Pietro Vitto Ottoboni born 1610 Alexander VIII was born at Venice, April 22, 1610, of Mark Ottoboni, a patrician and chancellor of Venice, and of Victoria Tornielli, a lady not inferior in rank. The Ottoboni family, which had anciently flourished at Padua, though others give Dalmatia and Lepanto as its origin, was transferred to Venice, where it was reckoned among the citizens of the ducal chancery till 1246, when it was ennobled and embraced several distinguished men. Aldobrandino Ottoboni had the title of patrician togato; and on his death, in 1258, the republic gave him a splendid funeral, and a noble tomb in the Church of Saint Reparata. Francis Ottoboni, in 1559, received the dignity of chancellor, the highest in the reach of a Venetian. The same dignity was bestowed, in 1620, on Leonard Ottoboni, who had been ambassador at Paris and Madrid. In 1646 Anthony Ottoboni obtained the title of procurator of Saint Mark, and the collar of the Golden Stole then given to the eldest son of the family. Pietro went through his earliest studies at Padua. At seventeen he was doctor in both laws; he then repaired to Rome, where

Laurentius Bandinelli born app 1100 Alexander III, originally named Laurentius Bandinelli, of the Paperoni family of Sienna, canon regular at Pisa and at Saint John Lateran, and professor of Holy Scripture in the .University of Bologna, was created cardinal-deacon in 1145 by Eugene, and then named by the same pope cardinal-priest of Saint Mark and vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Church; and, finally, he was made legate from Adrian IV to William, King of Sicily, and then to the Emperor Frederic I. He was elected pope after three days' deliberation. He refused the tiara, but was compelled to accept it, and he was crowned in the estate of Ninfa, near Veletri, on the 20th of September, 1159. As soon as Alexander was raised to the chair of Saint Peter, seeing the threatened schism, he addressed an encyclical letter to bishops of the principal churches, to inform them of his election. A few days afterwards he wrote another letter, stating the manner in which Cardinal Octavian had endeavored to seize the pontifical authority. One of those letters was addressed to Gerard, bishop, another to the canons, and a third to the doctors and professors of Bologna; and Tiraboschi remarks, on this subject, that the university of that city was the first to be thus honored with a letter from a sovereign pontiff. Saint Bernard had foretold the pontificate of Alexander, and at the same time announced the tribulations and the embarrassments that would attend upon his labors.

Pope Alexander III , in William Ross, Aberdour and Inchcolme (Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1885), pp.62-66
Alexander, Bishop, servant of the servants of God, to his beloved sons, Walter, Prior of the church of St. Colme's Inch, and his brethren, both present and to come, professing to the canonical life: To those who have chosen a religious life, it is befitting that apostolic guardianship should be extended; lest, perchance, the inroad of temerity, in the case of any one, should recall him from his purpose, or invade the binding obligation of our holy religion, which, be it far removed! On this account, beloved sons, we have compassionately yielded to your just entreaties, and have taken the above-named church of St. Colme's Inch - of which, by the Divine indulgence, you are possessed - under our protection, and that of St. Peter, and have awarded the privileges enumerated in the following deed: - Assuredly no one may presume to exact tithes of your newly cultivated lands, which you till with your own hands, or at your own charges, or for the nourishment of your cattle. We ordain, moreover, that if, at any time, there should be a general interdict on the land, it shall be lawful for you to perform Divine service, in an undertone, with closed doors, and without the ringing of bells - the excommunicated and interdicted being first excluded.

http://www.ewtn.com/library/COUNCILS/LATERAN3.HTM
THIRD LATERAN COUNCIL (1179) Canons Introduction We do not have the same reasons for doubting the ecumenical nature of this council as we have for Lateran I and II. For, the way in which the council was summoned and conducted by the pope, and the number of fathers who gathered from the whole Latin world and devoted their efforts to strengthening the unity of the church and condemning heretics, resemble rather the ancient councils than Lateran I and II and exemplify the typical council of the Middle Ages presided over by the Roman pontiff. For this reason it is not surprising that chronicles of the period frequently refer to this council as Lateran I. The canons of this council played a notable part in the future government of the church. They were frequently included in the collections of decretals compiled in the late 12th and early 13th century, and afterwards all were inserted into Pope Gregory IX's Decretals. Walter Holtzmann and other scholars considered that these decretal collections in fact arose from this Lateran council and its canons. Certainly the canons, unlike those of Lateran I and II and many preceding councils, appear to have been worked out by an excellent legal mind so that it is probable they were composed under the authority of Alexander III himself, who was an expert lawyer. The canons, except for those which refer to Lateran II or the council of Rheims in 1148 (see canons 2, 11, 20-22) or to Gratian's Decrees (see canons 1-4, 7, 11, 13-14, 17-18), are new and original.
