I would recommend any publisher in search of a good book of short stories to turn in the direction of Arthur Porges Thus wrote Hugh Lamb in 1977, when he included Arthur Porges' story 'The Man Who Wouldn't Eat' in his anthology Cold Fear . By then the author, having published hundreds of stories, had made his name in the fields of fantasy, science fiction, mystery, horror, and the supernatural; yet apart from a collection of Sherlockian parodies, Porges' work had not been gathered together into book form. Now, twenty-five years after Hugh Lamb made his suggestion, a collection of Arthur Porges' weird and supernatural tales at last appears between hard covers. The Mirror and Other Strange Reflections Porges' work, writes editor Mike Ashley, cannot easily be compared with the work of anyone else in the genre. Readers may detect a hint of Poe here, a little Hodgson there, perhaps a

"This is the website of British SF author Stephen Palmer, including extracts from his novels, graphics, news, and more! (Including music.)" The entry page is all graphic images, so if you don't have graphics enabled you'll do a certain amount of blind jumping. The first few items are sample chapters and book reviews. There's some interesting stuff here if you go exploring, for example the 6th link (from the main page) takes you to "The Naming of Things: ".. You can hang alot of baggage on a name. A character called, say, Gothmorrog is likely to be a bit of a baddie, whereas Melliandra is more likely to be a sympathetic, 'goodie' sort of a character. Also, following many traditions, names ending in -a tend to belong to women. This is a tradition that is fun to subvert..." (Stephen Palmer) [Updated Oct 2001]

    http://www.flash.net/~markthom/html/mathematical_fiction.html
There are so many works of fiction in which science or scientists plays an important role that we have a literary genre devoted to them. How many works of mathematical fiction can we think of? I would only count works in which mathematics actually had something indispensible to do with the story line. For instance, the movie The Mirror Has Two Faces is hardly mathematical fiction even though one of the two central characters is a mathematician, and even though one of their conversations mentions the theory of twin primes; he could just as well have been a linguist or an entomologist. Reader Clive Dawson informed me of two anthologies, still in print, by Clifton Fadiman: Fantasia Mathematica and The Mathematical Magpie , which are treasure-troves of mathematical fiction. In my list below (under construction!) these are abbreviated as Fadiman, FM and Fadiman, MM I don’t know of very many of these stories we really should write some more! but the list could be a valuable resource to a teacher wanting to engage his students’ imaginations onto mathematical topics. If anyone will submit suggestions, I’ll add them to this list with credits to you: Short stories: Asimov, Isaac. "The Feeling of Power": the value of simple calculation
