Suffering Summary During World War II two Jewish teenagers in New York meet under unfortunate circumstances. Reuven Malder is the pitcher and Danny Saunders the batter in a baseball game between two rival yeshivas. Danny, the son of the rebbe (or tzaddik) of a strict Hasidic sect, lines the ball straight to Reuven, hitting him in the eye. Later, Danny visits Reuven (the son of a Jewish scholar) in the hospital and they become close friends. The story takes us through the next five or six years of the boys' lives, as the World War ends, the Holocaust is revealed, and the Jewish state in Palestine is born in dissension and violence. Danny is destined by tradition to follow his father as tzaddik of his community, but he really desires to become a secular psychologist. Reuven is gifted in mathematics, but his desire is to become a rabbi. From his father Reuven learns about the historical roots and practices of Hasidism. At Reb Saunders's synagogue, he experiences Hasidism in practice, especially the practice whereby the Reb makes an intentional mistake in his sermon every week and challenges Danny to identify the mistake and elucidate it from the Talmud and commentaries.

Chaim Potok was born in New York City on February 17, 1929 to Jewish parents. He received a B.A. from Yeshiva University, was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary and obtained his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of many books dealing with Jewish-American issues and the problems which exist between the many different Jewish cultures. In The Chosen From the outset, The Chosen received a vast amount of critical acclaim although not all critics were completely taken with the book. Those who did not appreciate the deep level of metaphor complained of Potok's pretentiousness and his rough style and seemed almost offended by what they interpreted as an overly-didactic method of storytelling. Aside from the few unfavorable reviews I encountered, though, the majority of the reviews had only praise to extend to Potok. They found his story deeply moving and appropriate and seemed to appreciate the intense discussion of the interrelationships of the two boys with each other and with their fathers. This book could serve as a valuable introduction into the world of Judaism for the non-Jewish reader. Those who are not familiar with the Jewish tradition oftentimes do not realize how broad it really is. The Jews are not a single ethnic or religious population. They come from all over the world and have varying interpretations of their faith.
