The Asher Lev Novels of Chaim Potok
Bernard Bell
Chaim Potok achieved public acclaim with his first two novels, The Chosen (1967) and The Promise (1969), which depict the tension between hasidic Jews and orthodox Jews in New York. He continued to explore his theme of cultural confrontation in his third novel, My Name is Asher Lev (1972). In contrast to the first two novels which are written in the third person, Potok chose to write this novel through the eyes of Asher Lev himself, the chief protagonist of the story. Aged around twenty and an artist living in Paris, Asher Lev recalls his life from earliest memories in New York to his departure for Paris. Brooklyn Crucifixion I and Brooklyn Crucifixion II Eighteen years later, after writing In the Beginning The Book of Lights (1981), and (1985), Potok returned to Asher Lev to tell the second part of his story in The Gift of Asher Lev (1990). Potok again uses the same method of writing through the eyes of the artist, who is now twenty years older, married to Devorah, with a daughter Rocheleh and a son Avrumel, and living in the village of St Paul-de-Vence in the south of France. Asher picks up the story where the first book left off. Asher Lev resorted to using the crucifixion scene because "there was no aesthetic mold in his own religious tradition into which he could pour a painting of ultimate anguish and torment."

Books: Divine Images
Yigal Schleifer New York Long before his Mr. Spock turned the priestly finger-split into a Vulcan greeting, Leonard Nimoy was intrigued by the mystery behind the Priestly Blessing. Now, in another medium, he pursues the fascination with photos that are sure to arouse interest and ire. Shekhina By Leonard Nimoy Umbrage Editions 96 pp; $39.95 For decades, actor Leonard Nimoy has had to contend with the public’s inability to separate him from the iconic Mr. Spock, the unemotional and highly logical Vulcan he played on the television series "Star Trek" and in six feature-film sequels. What’s more, in person, Nimoy can come off as a bit Spock-like at times. Finding out during a recent interview, for example, that a reporter had grown up in Israel, Nimoy asks his stunned interlocutor with dead seriousness: "Are you familiar with a show called ‘Star Trek?’" But now Nimoy may be taking his most decisive step away from the shadow of Spock. This month marks his public debut as an artist, with the release of "Shekhina," his book of photographs exploring the feminine attributes of the divine. A collection of black-and-white images of mostly semi-nude female models, the book marks a radical career change for Nimoy, but also traces an arc that runs through his "Star Trek" days and back to his childhood.

Chaim Potok at Seattle Pacific University
An Encounter with Chaim Potok

Chaim Potok spoke for nearly one hour to a morning chapel group, including members of the public, in the Royal Brougham Pavillion at Seattle Pacific Univeristy on a cold, gray morning. Even before he assumed the podium, Chaim Potok was sittting, waving and smiling at the 700 faithful during his introduction by the President of the University. His audience was mostly students who had gathered to sing a Christian hymn and who came to hear this master of the religious novel from Philadelphia, PA
Chaim is strikingly handsome with a full beard, and he projects a voice that is clear, cogent, and compelling. His words are carefully crafted, and his ideas are like beacons for moral navigation through life. He speaks of each person's experience born into a small, particularistic world and the core to core confrontation of values when he (or she) moves beyond the boundries of that small, particularistic world.
But in the end, he reassures us that we take with us the values we have acquired in our early years of growth and maturation (framed figuratively by the master as gaining "a foothold"). Chaim Potok explains the Hassidic tradition from which he emerged with its emphasis on scholarship (and more particularly the study of the Talmud), and without saying so explicitly, he makes it clear that his great novel

My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok
Here is the original, deeply moving story of Asher Lev, the religious boy with an overwhelming need to draw, to paint, to render the world he knows and the pain he feels, on canvas for everyone to see. A loner, Asher has an extraordinary God-given gift that possesses a spirit all its own. It is this force that must learn to master without shaming his people or relinquishing any part of his deeply felt Judaism. It will not be easy for him, but he knows, too, that even if it is impossible, it must be done.... Resources on My Name is Asher Lev and Chaim Potok:
