Watercolour 6" x 13.5" Back to artist's page Previous image Next image My favourite time of day, is dawn. It is a time of transition: when dark turns to light, when nocturnal animals bed down and diurnal animals rise for the day, when birds, quiet through the night, begin to sing. In my travels through the Rocky Mountains parks of Canada and the United States I have found many wonderful places to sit and watch the dawn break; but my favourite place is Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. On this ridge you can watch the sun crest the mountain tops, the rising light chasing the shadows down the opposite side of the valley till the valley bottom is in full light. As the light increases, black-tailed deer, common on the ridge, begin to appear from their night-time hiding spots. This place is simply a lovely spot to sit, sip your morning coffee, and watch the day emerge around you. We ship worldwide and guarantee safe arrival!

Rediscovering Dawn Powell
REVIEW BY ROGER MILLER Like Mark Twain, I have a whole library of books not by Jane Austen. Though my knuckleheadedness in not being able to appreciate Ms. Austen is as incurable as it is inexcusable, I can appreciate the fanatical devotion of her admirers, because I feel almost the same way about Dawn Powell. Just as the Janeites cannot understand why everyone doesn't fall under the spell of their adored one, so do I find it unfathomable that a Dawn Powell novel is not in the hands of every literate person in the country. Alas, the truth is that the coterie of Dawnites remains fairly small, despite periodic attempts to boost her. The latest noble effort is by the Library of America, which has brought out a two-volume collection of her novels under the supervision of Tim Page, Powell's biographer and editor of her collected letters. The two new volumes are Dawn Powell: Novels 1930-1942 and Dawn Powell: Novels 1944-1962

INCLUDING THE NOVELS DANCE NIGHT AND TURN, MAGIC WHEEL AND SELECTED STORIES. AWN POWELL AT HER BEST brings this important American writer back between hardcovers for the first time in thirty years. Powell, whose work Edmund Wilson once compared to that of Evelyn Waugh and Muriel Spark, was shamelessly neglected until Gore Vidal "rediscovered" her in the pages of The New York Review of Books in 1987. This book includes the two novels Dawn Powell considered her finest, Dance Night (1930) and Turn, Magic Wheel (1936), both of which have been out of print for half a century. Dance Night , a blunt and sometimes brutal tale of a gritty midwestern factory town and the lost, lonely people who inhabit it, is the first of Powell’s six "Ohio novels" to be reissued. It is also the most austere of her novels and prefigures much of the "proletarian fiction" of the 1930s. Turn, Magic Wheel

By Dawn Powell Chapter One: The Early Diaries Introduction
Dawn Powell lived to write. In her case, this statement is not an empty phrase, nor is it an exaggeration. Powell was writing steadily by the time she was twelve; in the last year of her life, when she was mortally ill, her concerns were not so much with her failing health and ever-dwindling weight as with her inability to make headway on any of her writing projects.
Considering the difficulties Powell faced throughout most of her sixty-eight yearsan unconventional and sometimes deeply unhappy marital life, near-constant money troubles, the demands of a mentally and emotionally impaired son, heavy drinking that was debilitating at times, recurrent (and often mysterious) health problems, and what might now be described as a"bipolar"personalityit is astonishing that she wrote so prolifically and wrote so well. Besides her fifteen published novels, Powell left at least 100 short stories, half-a-dozen plays, an enormous quantity of book reviews and occasional pieces, thousands of personal letters, and her magnificent diaries.
Exactly when Powell began keeping a diary is unknown. She ran away from home around the age of twelve, because her stepmother had burned her notebooks and stories; that notorious bonfire may well have included some early diaries. A volume filled with observations, drawings, and poems, dating from after her runaway (circa 1910) survived into the late 1960s but has now apparently disappeared. During the summer of 1915, while working as a maid and waitress at a summer resort called the Shore Club on Lake Erie, Powell kept an occasional journal in a school notebook, addressed to an imaginary friend named"Woggs":

An Ironic Comedy of Lit'ry Manhattanites

"Although she has lampooned metropolitan manners in her plays, Dawn Powell is best known as a novelist of small-town life." Business in Bars
"This novel, wittily written, is a kind of 'Tobacco Road' of high-pressure business, mildly shocking at times, cleverly surprising, essentially formless, and presenting characters who are pretty hopeless because nothing much worth hoping for ever caught their attention." Cafe Society "If we absolutely must have novels about that none too alluring phenomenon known as cafe society, it is as well that Dawn Powell should write them."

Aid to help win 'war on terror', says Powell
By Anwar Iqbal

WASHINGTON, March 16: US Secretary of State Colin Powell has informed Congress that $395 million of financial assistance for Pakistan in 2004 will come from the Bush administration's anti-terrorist budget.
He said the administration was seeking a total of $4.7 billion to help the countries that have joined the US-led war on terrorism.
The assistance for these countries, he said, would come from a much larger, $18.8 billion package the administration wanted to set aside for international assistance during the fiscal 2004.
"Our number one priority is to fight and win the 'global war on terrorism.' The budget furthers this goal by providing economic military and democracy assistance to key foreign partners and allies," he said.
The proposed anti-terrorism budget seeks $657 million for Afghanistan, $460 million for Jordan, $395 million for Pakistan, $255 million for Turkey, $136 million for Indonesia, and $87 million for the Philippines.
Powell said Afghanistan would be one of America's top priorities because Washington believed that to win the war on terror it was also necessary to help rebuild the countries destroyed by terrorists.

US has legal authority for war: Powell
By Masood Haider

NEW YORK, March 16: US Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Sunday that US did not need a second UN resolution to go to war against Iraq and reiterated that the United States believes it already has the legal authority it needs for war.
As the US President Bush headed to an emergency summit in the Azores, Powell said he did not expect a new proposal to emerge from the 11th-hour diplomatic review.
Appearing on ABC news Programme "This Week" Powell did not say whether the United States would withdraw the second resolution now pending before UN Security Council, which has failed to garner support and forced the extraordinary weekend conference at a US airbase in Portugal's Azores Islands.
Pakistan's UN Ambassador Munir Akram who appeared on the ABC news Programme also said in order to reach a compromise in the UN Security Council more time was needed. But Powell rejected that proposal outright.
