Dawn Powell, the American Writer
By Gore Vidal Once upon a time, New York City was as delightful a place to live in as to visit. There were many amenities, as they say in brochures. One was something called Broadway, where dozens of plays opened each season, and thousands of people came to see them in an area which today resembles downtown Calcutta without, alas, that subcontinental city's deltine charm and intellectual rigor. Discovering Dawn Powell
By Carleen M. Loper "A capacity for going overboard is a requisite for a full-grown mind."
Dawn Powell "Powell was an equal opportunity impaler."
Boston Globe "For decades Dawn Powell was always just on the verge of ceasing to be a cult and becoming a major religion."
Gore Vidal "The women who appear in her stories are likely to be as sordid and absurd as the men."
Edmund Wilson There is an author whose books seem to have been tailor-made for Bette Davis. Unfortunately, despite the fact that they were published when Ms. Davis was still alive and well and shining like the star that she was... Hollywood was one giant collective idiot. I'm blaming Hollywood (in part) for Dawn Powell not being a household name, because after reading her novels and diaries she really should be to literature what Davis is to film. And if I blame Hollywood, and book critics and publishers of her era, and Gore Vidal for not deciding to sing his friend's praises until 20 years after she died, then I must also give equal time to praise and thank Tim Page. Tim Page is a Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic with a passion for Powell that almost defies explanation. Page edited her diaries (1995) and letters (1999), and wrote her biography (1998). A small Vermont publisher, Steerforth Press, also deserves our admiration for beautifully republishing her finest novels and plays. Now it is time to find other passionate readers to help fan the flames of this passion. (What better place than Tart City, I ask you?)

New York finally turns out for Dawn Powell Love fest for the novelist the Big Apple once spurned. By Maria Russo Jan. 27, 2000 I hate slightly familiar people," read novelist Kate Christensen to a group of about 100 New Yorkers who braved a snowstorm Tuesday night to attend a tribute to the late Dawn Powell. The quip, which comes from Powell's diary entry for April 6, 1931, made the whole audience laugh it was the kind of dead-on Powell line that rings true for anyone who's done time on the literary party circuit. Dawn Powell and New York seldom has the match between a city and a writer been so felicitous. The wise, wickedly funny Ohio-born author loved New York better than any place else, but her writings went virtually unnoticed during her lifetime, and when she died in 1965 she was pretty much forgotten. At Tuesday's tribute (hosted by Housing Works Used Book Café), six authors, all Powell devotees, read selections from her work and it was clear that, finally, New York adored her right back. The evening's readers included novelist Susan Minot and Tim Page, Powell's modest, persevering

Vidal's 1987 essay in the New York Review of Books, in which he called Powell "our best comic novelist," helped lead to the reissuing of several of her novels. In the early '90s, music critic Tim Page picked up the ball, editing Powell's letters and remarkable diaries. Page now completes his dedicated work on Powell with this compelling and sympathetic biography.

'Dawn Powell: Novels 1930-1942; Dawn Powell: Novels 1942-1965' Dawn Powell. Edited by Tim Page Reintroducing Dawn Powell Sunday, November 04, 2001 By Roger K. Miller Dawn Powell: Novels 1930-1942; Dawn Powell: Novels 1942-1965 By Dawn Powell. Edited by Tim Page Library of America
Few novelists writing in English have been able to create satire with quite so fine and sure a touch as Dawn Powell. he Englishman whose surname she shares, Anthony Powell, managed it in a 12-volume series of novels, “A Dance to the Music of Time,” but others to whom she has been compared, such as Evelyn Waugh and Muriel Spark, do not ground their fiction in mundane, middle-class reality the way Powell does. But satire, George S. Kaufman said, is what closes on Saturday night. Is it that attitude that has secured Powell’s relative obscurity? Perhaps. Yet satire did not keep some, like Waugh, from becoming world-famous; even Anthony Powell is well-known by comparison. Certainly Powell, who was born in Ohio in 1896 and died in New York City in 1965, yearned for recognition. Edmund Wilson and Gore Vidal tried at different times to jump-start her reputation. The publication of a biography and a volume of letters in recent years threatened a rebirth, but it begins to look instead like a stillbirth.

Of course it's difficult to put too much faith in the judgment of someone wearing a half pound of makeup and a tsunami of candy-colored hair, but after reading master historian Jacques Barzun 's seminal From Dawn To Decadence: 1500 to the Present I've begun to wonder if I shouldn't give Jan Crouch a little more respect.

The resurrection of the great dualistic novelist Dawn Powell (1864-1965)who chronicled both Greenwich Village cafe society (hilariously) and small-town Ohio life (poignantly)was initially sparked by a 1987 Gore Vidal essay that led to the reissue of several Powell novels. In the 1990s, Washington Post music critic Tim Page revivified her further. Page wrote essays about Powell, penned introductions for new reprints of her titles, and, with Powell family members, hired a lawyer and sued Powell's ineffectual literary executor for the release of the writer's amazing collection of papers. From there, he edited and guided The Diaries of Dawn Powell , which assured her standing as primary wit and social chronicler of the 20th century. But Powell still had no biography; now Page has taken care of that, too. Dawn Powell: A Biography is the first published account of her life story, as chronicled via letters, diary entries, and reminiscences from surviving relatives and friends. Apart from some sentimental, long-winded slides describing Powell's troubled Ohio youth ("the happiest moments of her childhood were those idyllic times when she was hidden away by herself, in treetops, thickets, or attic rooms, pencil in hand, observing people, places, and events and recording everything in her notebooks"), Page's tone in this book is serious, studious, and well balanced. More detective than literary critic, Page eschews literary analysis in favor of neatly organized discussions of each of her 15 novels, setting his own textual synopses against Powell's diary entries and public and private reviews of each title (her friends Edmund Wilson and John Dos Passos frequently offered unpublished critiques).

Monday, November 1, 1999, at 9:25 AM PT Dear Tim, I'm thrilled to speak to the undisputed president of the Dawn Powell Fan Club. We Dawnites ought to stick together. Sometimes a passion for Powell can still feel eccentric, like owning a hairless cat. When a first-edition Powell book goes up for auction on eBay, the same three or four of us bid; I've often thought we should join forces for some harmless price-fixing. Yet I've been told that thanks to you, the Dawn Powell revival is officially a done deal, her place at the table of American Lit all nicely set. So my first question for you: How solid is the Powell revival? I certainly didn't see anyone reading her at the beach this summer. Nor do many of my academic colleagues know her work. They've heard of her, though. "Which one should I read?" they ask suspiciously. One of Powell's problems, as she griped herself, is that she wrote so damn much. She failed to produce one Perfect Little Novela
