J.H. Prynne
Poems (Bloodaxe Books, #12)
The amazing Mr. Prynne
The novelist Peter Ackroyd is certain: "J.H.Prynne is without doubt the most formidable and accomplished poet in Britain today, a writer who has single handedly changed the vocabulary of expression." Donald Davie called him: "the most intelligent man in Cambridge." Ian Sinclair's novel, Radon Daughters, fictionalised Prynne as the prophetic and astounding Undark. And the Australian wunderkind of the radical pastoral, John Kinnsella, acknowledges Prynne as his North Star. Yet Prynne is private to the point of invisibility, refusing to be photographed for the media or ever give readings. His poetry, published in limited edition books and pamphlets by small presses, has been feverishly difficult to obtain outside specialist bookshops and libraries. Adding to this the lack of critical writings or even informed discussion beyond the Cambridge/London avant-garde poetry scene, means that the surface tension of the dominant and public literary culture in Britain has remained undisturbed. But with the publication of Prynne's collected Poems from Bloodaxe books a change is maybe coming.

On J.H. Prynne’s Rich in Vitamin C The title is interesting in this context, as “Rich in Vitamin C” is both a scientific fact that has particular ramifications with regards to healthy growth – “it’s supposed to ward off Colds!” (maybe I should capitalise the C in Cold) – and an advertising slogan. Prynne seems to be taking to task the commercialising of the personal – love, as well as the political-military dialogue. The references to a “screen”, “sight-lines”, and “pulse”, also suggest an interaction or collusiveness, even conflation of acts of the body – seeing, visualising, pumping blood – and the processes of the economic, military, and social machine. All of this is superbly united in four tight metrical nine-line stanzas. For Prynne, the field of the page, or maybe the space of the margins, the position of the text, and measurements of indentation and so on, are emphatic to meaning. They affect how something is said, and how it is read. For Prynne, the production of a poem, the production of a book, are as much part of the cycles of commercial fetishisation as the creation of the poem itself. So, it is the responsibility of the poet (and reader) to work at diminishing a degree of moral irresponsibility that overshadows the creation and production of art. Which explains why most Prynne works have been available in small print-run pamphlet forms published by presses for whom profit is not a motive. The forthcoming Poems are being published by a combination of Bloodaxe and the Australian presses, Folio and Fremantle Arts Centre Press, keeping costs down and avoiding, as much as possible, the usual dictates of the market.

"Constructing realities that are, like a hill or a road, already there."
Toward a Naive Reading: Poems by J.H. Prynne by Alison Croggon
Putting aside one's consciousness of the inadequacy of words, and the idiocy of paraphrase, and the violence of the act of reading, with this simple apology, one might begin. An irresistible memory of looking at an ink drawing by Giacometti: a cross hatching of fine lines, drawing the eye to a slanted foot which echoes the angle of the face - a madonna, yes, drawnout of the history of form, informing the perception of the present, limpidly emerging from the chaos of process - poignantly assenting to the past, to an aesthetic predicated on harmonic ideas of beauty, a sediment in this catalytic solution, the increasing consciousness of the dissolution of theobject in the contractions of the observer, who labours forth an object that is transformation itself. So a mass of perception, beset with contradictions. And yet, and yet. . . The threshold again and again: another possibility, a possibility only, of the sacred. The economy of names, the transcendence

And yet the analyses carry the focus of concentration to extreme closeness within the verbal horizons of the text; for all the insistence upon thematic memory and its constant shadows, Bollack matches the reduced abstractions of the text-world with his own vocabulary of scruple and question and lexical inwardness; his investigation of 'Sprachgitter', from the collection of that name, is exemplary in following his characteristic sequence: the text (in German and French); la lecture; l'interpretation analysee; at the same time as strewing his footnotes with the carefully discredited wreckage of analysis by previous scholars and critics. If this is philology in the classical sense, it has been transformed in the service of a problematic modernity not easily brought into the philologist's terms of reference, and it has been purged of the elaborations of apparatus by the pursuit of a fierce simplicity at the heart of all the exceptional imbrications of the text surface. And in the history of time itself there is never enough time for acts of purificatory recollection, purely and only. Primo Levi famously and erroneously said of Celan, 'Noi vivi non siamo soli, non dobbiamo scrivere come se fossimo soli'; Bollack does not refer to this and would rightly cast it aside; but when another survivor boasts that 'We are not intending to pull out, not from Jenin, not from Nablus, not from Ramallah' we must (we must) note the ascending degrees of fatefulness in such a list, all parts of the ordinary world in which not quite innocent people (we, and they, and us) dwell unpoetically upon the earth and terminate in anguish there.

PRYNNE'S POEMS J.H. Prynne. Poems. Newcastle upon Tyne, UK: Bloodaxe Books, 1999. Devin Johnston When a prominent writer associated with Language poetry visited Chicago to give a reading last year, a student asked her what contemporary poet she reads with the greatest enthusiasm. She answered—without elaborating— "Jeremy Prynne." And though Prynne's readership in the United States has been minuscule, it has included a devoted following among experimental poets. Perhaps ironically, such poets often wield considerable influence regarding what gets taught, written about, and sometimes even read. Until now, the fugitive nature of Prynne's publications, as well as his reticence to give readings or engage in self-promotion, have not permitted a wider readership (though such qualities have contributed to his mystique among the devoted). With the publication of this volume of collected poems, from a major British press, that situation may change. Recent issues of The New Yorker have included a reader's poll for the best volume of poetry of 1999: Prynne's book was listed along with those of Louise Glück, David Ferry, John Koethe, and Sherod Santos.
