Pym, Barbara
Barbara Mary Crampton Pym was born in Oswestry, Shropshire, the 2nd of June 1913, from Frederic Crampton Pym, solicitor, and Irena Spenser Thomas. She studied at the Huyton College, in Liverpool, and readed English at the St. Hilda's College in Oxford (B.A. "with honors"). During II World War she worked for Censorship (as Mildred does in Excellent Women) then served in the Women's Royal Naval Service, in Britain and in Naples. From 1946 to 1974 she worked at the International African Institute where she was assistant editor of the anthropological journal Africa.
Her first novel, Some Tame Gazelle, was published in 1950, followed by five more books. In 1963 the new chief editor of her publisher rejected An Unsuitable Attachment, because, as he wrote, "in present conditions we could not sell a sufficient number of copies to cover costs". In 1969 she sent The Sweet Dove Died, written in 1968, to many publishers, with no success. Discouraged, she stopped writing.
In 1974, Barbara Pym retired from the Institute relocating with her sister Hilary (and a cat named Minerva) in Finstock, Oxfordshire. But in 1977 she gets her revenge. The Times Literary Supplement asks to some eminent literates a list of the "most underrated novelist of the century". Barbara Pym is the only one to be mentioned twice, by poet Philip Larkin and by Lord David Cecil. In a forthnight, Pym is established as a major novelist. Her new novel, Quartet in Autumn, is readily accepted and she will be able to publish two more books before her death.

BARBARA PYM AND IVY COMPTON-BURNETT
A Link via Robert Liddell
Barbara Pym, another excellent British novelist, never met Ivy Compton-Burnett, but they had much in common. Their novels and their styles had some similarities; both found themselves compared to Jane Austen.
Pym, of a younger generation, first read ICB when she was a student at Oxford in the Thirties, and was not impressed. As an undergraduate she made the acquaintance of Robert Liddell , always known to her as 'Jock'. At first she admired him from a distance, as she did his friend Henry Harvey - the two men shared digs. Later she had an affair of sorts with Henry: he was less interested than she was. When he left Oxford both Pym and Liddell missed his company. Their friendship prospered and they remained close, at least by correspondence for the rest of her life. He encouraged her writing, and later advised her about several of her books and sought her opinion on his own manuscripts. Liddell told Pym that he regarded her as the finest comic writer of the century after Ivy Compton-Burnett.
In the early years of their correspondence they often affected Miss ICB's style, writing parodies to describe their activities to each other. By this time Liddell had converted Barbara Pym to the ICB novels. The influence shows in her own fiction, and has been noted by critics. As early as the thirties she was using 'very Compton-Burnett' in her diaries to describe people and dialogue she meets, and several times mentions what a powerful influence ICB has on writers who read her.

Barbara Pym
Profile
Novelist; born at 72 Willow Street, Oswestry the daughter of a solicitor and educated at Liverpool College, Huyton and St. Hilda's College, Oxford where she read English. She spent most of her childhood at Morda Lodge, a large Edwardian house on the outskirts of Oswestry, which was to remain the Pym family home for many years. Barbara was brought up in a family where the Church played a major part; her mother was assistant organist at the parish church of St. Oswald, her father sang in the choir and there was a longstanding family tradition of having curates home for supper on a Sunday. Both parents were keen members of Oswestry Operatic Society in the 1920's. Barbara's first real creative work (she had been encouraged to write by her mother) was an operetta called The magic diamond performed by family and friends at Morda Lodge in April 1922. She was writing throughout the 1930's and, indeed, was working on her first novel Some tame gazelle from 1935 onwards although it was not published until 1950. During the war she joined the W.R.N.S. and after worked for the International African Institute, living with her sister in London. In more recent years and up to the time of her death she was living in a country cottage in Oxfordshire.
