E llery Queen is, in my opinion, the last of the great classical detectives. This means, among other things, that the plot of the mystery is always paramount, far more important than characterization (the classical detectives don't have personalities, they have mannerisms), social relevance, great writing, or anything else. Obviously, this focus on the puzzle aspect of the whodunit lends itself well to short-stories we shouldn't forget that the whole mystery genre was for decades primarily focused on stories rather than novels; nowadays, very few crime writers can do a good short whodunit, and even these accomplish the task largely by referring to the characterizations they have established in previous novels. Ellery Queen is an example of the Boulevardier or Man About Town, a now vanished breed. He is (in theory) the Manhattan-based author of mysteries featuring his own detective work; but we never actually see him writing. Instead, he stumbles into cases based on his father's position as a police inspector, and solves the crimes without turning a hair (and apparently without any resentment from the real police). What meager personality he possesses is supplied by good suits, dark hair, and silvery eyes. However, the puzzles are good, scrupulously observing the fair-play rules of the classic whodunit: in fact, there is usually a clear demarcation just before the solution to the puzzle, so that the reader will have a chance to take a stab at the case. The topics of the various stories run the familiar gamut of classical short story territory, including rare books, vanishing trains, poisonings over inheritances, and dying messages identifying the killer.

Ellery Queen at the Movies The Spanish Cape Mystery
Liberty, 1935 (65 minutes) Director: Lewis D. Collins
Source: novel " The Spanish Cape Mystery
EQ: Donald Cook Inspector Queen: Guy Usher Stella Godfrey: Helen Twelvetrees Godfrey: Frank Sheridan Captain Kidd: Richard Cramer Sheriff: Harry Stubbs Judge Macklin: Berton Churchill
Some liberties are taken with the classic plot (the naked victim is accorded a set of swimming trunks; the story is relocated to the West Coast) but the story emerges fairly unscathed. Unfortunately, Cook's flirtatious Ellery is unrelated to any EQ novel, and the blustery Sheriff is the worst kind of comic relief. The rights to the film belonged to its distributor, Republic, who many years ago issued it in a truncated form for local television stations. The opening sequences (the only part of the film in which the Inspector appears) were deleted and not seen until a recent broadcast on Encore's Mystery Channel, which restored the missing footage. A Mystery Reference Shelf or Two
    By: Michael S. Greenbaum
URL: http://janusbooks.com Mystery and detective fiction is probably more popular today than at any time in its history, including the so-called Golden Age in the 1920s and 30s. I've tried to aim this list at generalist dealers who might want more information about mystery fiction, but do not need the reference works of a specialist in the field. The items marked with an asterisk are the most highly recommended and useful of the reference materials for a generalist dealer. Through them, one can locate most of the others. The rest of the works listed are some of my favorites, and other mystery dealers probably have their own preferences. Chacun a son gout.
