Quintilian and the Illustrated Manuscripts of Terence: A Study of Hand Gestures in the Performance of Palliata
The Roman actor followed a strict dramatic code regarding the use of voice, hands and bodily gestures. In order to achieve the demanding task of expressing emotions through gesture, he needed the training of an athlete and a dancer (Cicero, De Orat. III 22.83 and 59.220). Distinct gestures were used by characters in both tragedies and comedies (Bieber, 1965). Unfortunately, no ancient treatise listing hand positions used by professional actors has been preserved. General essays regarding gesticulation by Plotius, Nigidius and Pliny, mentioned by Quintilian ( Inst. XI 3.143), are lost. Therefore, in our attempt to revive the theatrical code of hand gestures used in comoediae palliatae, we will look for evidence in images, texts of plays, and rhetorical treatises. This paper will examine a few positions prescribed by chironomia

Notes to Quintilian's Preface
An eminent bookseller at Rome, mentioned by Martial,iv. 72; xiii 3. Convincio . This word is not used here in a reproachful, but in a friendly sense; as in Cicero, Ep. ad Q. Fratr. ii. 10: . See also Cic. ad. Div. xii. 25, and Pro Cluent. c. 27, where convicium maximum fecit is, as Spalding observes, for maximopere contendit, poposcit . "By convicium he means acerrimoe preces Rollin Satismaturuisse . Nondum satis sunt expoliti. Regius Tot alioqui negotiis districtus . "Distracted otherwise by so many occupations." He had not only to work at his book, but to attend to other men's affairs. Two manuscripts, says Burmann, have aliorum , instead of alioqui Oram solventibus . That the word ora means funis nauticus is apparent from Livy, xxii. 19; xxviii. 36, on which passages the reader may consult Drakenborch's edition. Quintilian also uses the word in the same sense in iv. 2, 41. It is aptly observed by Gesner, in his Thesaurus, that the word in this signification seems to have been peculiar to the common people and sailors, and is consequently but rare among writers. Quintilian:
Ausbildung des Redners
(95 n. Chr.)

Marcus Fabius Quintilian
Marcus Fabius Quintilian was a notable Roman advocate, teacher and posthumously a famous authority on rhetoric. He was born around 35 CE at Calahorra in Spain. His father seems to have also been an orator. His school brought him unusual wealth for one of his profession. He taught for twenty years, numbering the younger Pliny among his pupils, and retired, perhaps in 88, to write his masterpiece the new translation by Donald Russell is reviewed below. Donald Russell's new five-volume Loeb Classical Library edition of The Orator's Education , which replaces an eighty-year-old translation by H. E. Butler, provides a text and facing translation fully up to date in light of current scholarship and well tuned to today's taste. Russell also provides unusually rich explanatory notes, which enable full appreciation of this central work in the history of rhetoric.
