Colossi of Memnon MIGHTY MEMNON
By RUNOKO RASHIDI T According to Homer, "To Troy no hero came of nobler line, Or if nobler, Memnon, it was thine." In more recent times (late in the nineteenth century), Dr. Rufus Lewis Perry pronounced that: "The distinguished Cushite whom Homer calls Memnon came and went like a meteor in the galaxy of illustrious Ethiopian monarchs. But the poet in classic song and the historian in legendary tradition, have preserved enough of his brightness to indicate his rank and power among the contemporary potentates of the earth. He was king of the Ethiopians. He fought against the Greeks in the Trojan war; and after he had slain Antilochus, son of Nestor, was killed by Achilles." Dr. Perry concluded that, "Through slain by Achilles, Memnon is so embalmed in verse and prose by Homer, Hesiod, Virgil and others, that his name will last as long as the writings of these imperishable authors." 67. North Of Yesterday
are paired in the stories of Della and Wally, and then again in those of Vincentand Waz, and made poignant mockery by a mad poet, quintus of smyrna.
http://www.mcphersonco.com/fiction/north.html
Thomas McEvilley North of Yesterday
A novel Spring was turning into summer. I stood where the waves crashed, waiting for Della in the late afternoon by the sea. Birds rested on the swelling crests, fluttered up from their closing grip, then rested again. The waves poured closer, the sun sank down, and the birds screeched on in their game of death.
And Della was no longer just late. She was not coming.
She had flown through the crack in the vase....
This compelling beginning to North of Yesterday sets the tone for an even more compelling journey that quickly follows, a travel beyond space and time into the terrain of the unconscious, the synaesthesia of dream. It is a novel of male psyche, the multi-layered recesses of mythology which define the object of desire and the destructive/redemptive quest. The tale forms a captivating matrix of the interior realm through an unfolding stream of cultural remnants (with archetypal and architectonic language), unmasking an essential conflict within the Western mind. There is both murder and mystery at its core, but it is a hermetic mystery of supra-consciousness, the transmigration of souls, and it may be that murder occurs nowhere but within the imagination... North of Yesterday is written in a fluid mixture of prose and verse. It incorporates classical meters and narration, and systematically interweaves the Orpheus myth with a contemporary situation: the story of a death by heroin overdose. Love, guilt, desire and degradation are paired in the stories of Della and Wally, and then again in those of Vincent and Waz, and made poignant mockery by a mad poet, Quintus of Smyrna. This is a bizarre epic of Everyman, a challenging prose invention with few antecedents:

Byzantine Literature
To grasp correctly the essential characteristics of Byzantine literature, it is necessary first to analyze the elements of civilization that find expression in it, and the sources whence they spring. If Byzantine literature is the expression of the intellectual life of the Greek race of the Eastern Roman Empire during the Christian Middle Ages , it is evident that there is question here of an organism not simple but multiform; a combination of Greek and Christian civilization on the common foundation of the Roman political system, set in the intellectual and ethnographic atmosphere of the Near East. In Byzantine literature, therefore, four different cultural elements are to be reckoned with: the Greek, the Christian , the Roman, and the Oriental. Their reciprocal relations may be indicated by three intersecting circles all enclosed within a fourth and larger circle representing the Orient. Thus in each of the three smaller circles we shall have to determine the influence of the Orient. While Alexandria, as an important central and conservative factor, was thus influential in confining, and during the Byzantine period, directing, the literary and linguistic life of the later Greek world, a second conservative factor is found in the influence of the Roman culture-circle on the political and judicial life of the Eastern Empire. Alexandria, the centre of intellectual refinement, is balanced by Rome, the centre of government. It is as a Roman Umpire that the Byzantine State enters into history; its citizens are known as Romans (

It is very interesting if one wants to delve into the real archeology of Troy. It is deep, detailed, and fascinating for the Trojan War scholar. For the casual student, or amateur, its heavy going. Combellack, Frederick M. 1968. The war at Troy (What Homer Didn't Tell) by Quintus of Smyrna, New York. Combellack has translated Quintus' The War at Troy from the original Latin poem of around 360 AD into English prose. This poem, which covers the time between the end of THE ILIAD, and the beginning of THE ODYSSEY, is interesting from several points of view. One' it is apparently based on now lost stories which fill the gap between Homer's poems, and is full of interesting people, and events. Two; it shows clearly how superior Homer is as a creator of character, and believable story when compared to other poets who attempt the same subject matter. Edwards, Mark W. 1987.

Concerning the Martyrdom of the Holy Polycarp The Church of God which sojourns at Smyrna, to the Church of God sojourning in Philomelium, and to all the congregations of the Holy and Catholic Church in every place: Mercy, peace, and love from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, be multiplied.
Chapter I.-Subject of Which We Write.
We have written to you, brethren, as to what relates to the martyrs, and especially to the blessed Polycarp, who put an end to the persecution, having, as it were, set a seal upon it by his martyrdom. For almost all the events that happened previously [to this one], took place that the Lord might show us from above a martyrdom becoming the Gospel. For he waited to be delivered up, even as the Lord had done, that we also might become his followers, while we look not merely at what concerns ourselves but have regard also to our neighbours. For it is the part of a true and well-founded love, not only to wish one's self to be saved, but also all the brethren.
Chapter II.-The Wonderful Constancy of the Martyrs.
