Ann Ward Radcliffe from The Italian
Gothic Genre Genius Ann Ward Radcliffe (1764-1823)
In the 18th century, during the early days of English novel writing, a promising new writer took the book-reading public by storm with her bizarre tales of spooky castles, evil villains, mystery, and intrigue. The novelist's name was Ann Ward Radcliffe and her books established the Gothic romance genre. Ann became one of England's most popular writers, but also one of the least well known. She led such a secluded life that her readers didn't even know if she was alive or dead. When word got out that she was alive, people widely assumed that she was insane, driven mad by the horrors she created for her novels. Far from mad, Ann just didn't like the spotlight and preferred to confine her activities to the home front. Ann was so reclusive that Christina Rossetti The English Chronicle The Castles of Athlyn and Dunbane , was published in 1789 and her second novel, A Sicilian Romance , was published a year later. It was her third book

The Mysteries of Udolpho
by Ann Radcliffe
A Romance Interspersed With Some Pieces of Poetry Fate sits on these dark battlements, and frowns,
And, as the portals open to receive me,
Her voice, in sullen echoes through the courts,
Tells of a nameless deed.
Volume 1 Chapter I A home is the resort
Of love, of joy, of peace and plenty, where,
Supporting and supported, polish'd friends
And dear relations mingle into bliss. Thomson M. St. Aubert loved to wander, with his wife and daughter, on the margin of the Garonne, and to listen to the music that floated on its waves. He had known life in other forms than those of pastoral simplicity, having mingled in the gay and in the busy scenes of the world; but the flattering portrait of mankind, which his heart had delineated in early youth, his experience had too sorrowfully corrected. Yet, amidst the changing visions of life, his principles remained unshaken, his benevolence unchilled; and he retired from the multitude 'more in PITY than in anger,' to scenes of simple nature, to the pure delights of literature, and to the exercise of domestic virtues.

89. Why Not Ann Radcliffe?
For instance, I would like to know why ann radcliffe (17641823), the author ofthe classics, The Mysteries of Udolpho, A Sicilian Romance, The Italian, etc.
http://home.hiwaay.net/~sseale/radcliffe.html
For instance, I would like to know why Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823), the author of the classics, The Mysteries of Udolpho A Sicilian Romance The Italian , etc. is not generally even considered 'in the running' for 'greatest female author" when compared to Jane Austen (1775-1817). And please, let's not base our judgement on relatively artificial distinctions such as the difference between 'novels' and 'romances'!
