Carl Rakosi Papers
Scope / Content Note
The Carl Rakosi Papers document Rakosi's recent activities as a poet and writer, as well as his professional career as a psychotherapist and social worker. The collection, which dates between 1903 and 1995 (bulk dates, 1988-1995), is arranged in four series: 1) BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS, 2) CORRESPONDENCE, 3) WRITINGS BY RAKOSI, and 4) WRITINGS BY OTHERS. Series 1: BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS The BIOGRAPHICAL MATERIALS series contains Rakosi's birth certificate, official academic transcripts and grade reports, naturalization papers, poetry flyers, newspaper clippings, and his professional profile and list of publications as a psychotherapist. Also included are numerous transcribed interviews with Rakosi. Series 2: CORRESPONDENCE The CORRESPONDENCE series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and reflects Rakosi's literary and professional career. In most cases, Rakosi made carbon copies of his replies. Notable correspondents include Jean-Paul Auxemery, who translated many of Rakosi's poems into French, Cid Corman, Andrew Crozier, Kathi George, and Michael Heller. Also represented are exchanges with the editors of numerous poetry magazines. Finally, Rakosi's early life is reflected in the letters of his first girlfriend, Mary Biggs, and his mother, Flora Steiner. Series 3: WRITINGS BY RAKOSI The WRITINGS BY RAKOSI series is arranged in four subseries: A) Lectures, B) Prose, C) Poetry, and D) Social Work and Psychotherapy. The "Lectures" subseries contains notes for two lectures on poetry. The "Prose" subseries contains several essays on "Objectivist" poets, including Charles Reznikoff and George Oppen. Of particular interest is a short essay called "The Objectivist Connection" that explains the origin of the term "Objectivist." Also included is the first draft and source materials for Rakosi's unpublished autobiography.

COLLECTED POEMS and COLLECTED PROSE CARL RAKOSI COLLECTED POEMS
This edition incorporates Rakosi's final revisions of his life work and prints the poems in an order determined by the poet himself. The last surviving member of the Objectivist group, Rakosi here demonstrates his lifelong fidelity to the poetics which he developed in dialogue with Zukofsky during the 1930s. This volume clearly establishes Rakosi's stature as a major American poet, a worthy heir of Pound, Eliot, Williams, and Stevens.

COLLECTED PROSE

This volume offers Rakosi's memoirs not only of his fellow Objectivist poets but also of other writers including Kenneth Fearing and Margery Latimer, along with a substantial collection of sharply pointed aphorisms on poetry, politics, and society. Afterword, "Carl Rakosi and the Re-invention of the Epigram," by Burton Hatlen. "Directness and integrity are the features which cling to the mind in the aftermath of reading this collection." THE NATIONAL POETRY FOUNDATION
CARL RAKOSI: MAN AND POET Michael Heller, Editor

The last of the Objectivist poets to win general critical recognition, Carl Rakosi is increasingly acclaimed as a central figure in American poetry. Carl Rakosi: Man and Poet represents the first full critical overview of Rakosi's work, from his experimental work of the 1920s and early 1930s, much admired by Ezra Pound and Louis Zukofsky, through the extraordinary flowering of his "second" career as a poet, from the late 1960s to the present. Rakosi says of his writing: "When I sit down to write, I must not forget that one does not strike an attitude in front of a mountain." "[Rakosi's] range and humanity persuade all over again that we can't much longer talk of a a 'Pound-Williams tradition' as a sort of accredited counter-culture in this century's American poetry. European though he is by origin and in his sympathies, Rakosi belongs not in the margin but near to the center of what should be seen internationally as distinctively and invaluably American in twentieth-century culture." Donald Davie, The Threepenny Review The more than twenty-two poets and critics contributing to this collection include: George Evans, Andrew Crozier, Richard Caddell, Donald Davie, Cid Corman, Eric Mottram. Published in honor of Rakosi's 90th birthyear

HYGIEIA, OF PERSPECTIVE
BY CARL RAKOSI
AIE! There's the greenwood fern and the open woods and the smell of hay and the eye of a frog and a fern signature left in a coal and there is fern by analogy, a most ancient weed. "IN THY SLEEP/LITTLE SORROWS SIT AND WEEP" In the night a little crow whose wing was broken lay on the ground and cried out. Strigidae the owl protector of grain heard and glided soundless nearby to a low branch. Straight ahead he looked like a man engraved as on an ancient measuring cup or seated at the knee of Michelangelo's Night waiting motionless erect. Not two weeks old the crow slept. An hour passed. A feather stirred. instantly the great head swivelled and the bird of prey leaped, spearing and carried off the body to a distant tree stump. Again he waited listening. The implacable beak then grasped it by the head and gulped it down. Three times he swallowed, spitting out the crow bones, fur and feathers. Then the great bird silent on Egyptian tombs blinked preened and hooted.

INCIDENT IN HELL
By Carl Rakosi
Our ancestors were happy when the white man came. We made him welcome and took care of him When he was hungry we fed him. We never did him any harm. He seemed honest and we trusted him, but once he was settled his words became as flimsy as fluff from a cotton-wood and he acted like a coyote around a hen-house. There was no limit to his greed and cunning. His soul glared the way an owl glares at a covey of quail-chicks. He had no mercy, yet he said there is a God. What is he? Who sent him here? With that the old chief his face lines with dignity said no more but the agony in his eyes was like a caged beast in the Inferno as it struck bed-rock: kill or be killed signed, Playboy of the Western Hemisphere Alas, old chief! http://www.sfsu.edu/~poetry/news/rakosi.htm
A Conversation with Carl Rakosi by Steve Dickison The nearly eighty-year publishing history of American poet Carl Rakosi begins in the early 1920s, with a number of poems in a college magazine, at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, then in several national periodicals and "little magazines." An invitation from Louis Zukofsky to contribute to the "Objectivists" issue of Poetry magazine (February 1931) was followed by inclusion in An "Objectivists" Anthology The Earth Suite (1997) and The Old Poet's Tale (1999)-the latter the first of three volumes planned for publication as his Collected Works On a brightly lit, warm Tuesday afternoon-late San Franciscan summer weather in September-we met at the poet's home, a modest flat in the city's Sunset District, where he lives with his friend Marilyn Kane. The note beside the doorbell on street level reads "C. Rawley / C. Rakosi"-Callman Rawley being the name under which Carl Rakosi practiced professionally, reserving his given name as his nom de plume . Elsewhere he's explained that during his early years no one in the Midwest could pronounce "Rakosi," and there were fears, too, that a foreign name would make it tough to get good work and make a living.
