INTERVIEW WITH
TONYA RAMAGOS
AUTHOR OF
DISASTER STRIKES
Interview by LISA Lisa:Could you tell a little about yourself? Where you grew up and what led to your writing career? Tonya:I grew up in Ocean Springs, MS, and Berwick, LA. It's funny but boredom and a love for books is what led me to a writing career. My father owned a service station at the time and I was stuck there every afternoon after school when I was in junior high. I loved to read and spent most of my time at the station with a book in my hand. One day something I was reading sparked an idea for a book of my own and I began writing it. Not long after my parents discovered I was attempting to write a book and enrolled me in a correspondence course though the Institute for Children's Literature to help. Other than a few years where life took hold and didn't leave me time to write, I've been writing ever since. Lisa:When do you find time to write while doing your daily day-to-day things? Tonya:Being the mother of two wonder boys, one of which is a ten month old, I'll have to admit it's hard to find the time to write some days. I have to be extremely organized and self disciplined to get anything accomplished. Usually I take care of my chores not relating to writing first thing in the morning so I have the rest of the day to squeeze in writing time when one of the children isn't demanding my attention. Have a very supportive husband who does as much as he can when he's home from work helps a lot too. Lisa:What do you think about the Young Adult market today? Do you think there are enough books out there for this age group?

INTERVIEW WITH
CALLEY MOORE
AUTHOR OF
MURDEROUS GREED, THE MYSTERY CLUB, and DYING FOR CHARISMA
Interview by LISA Lisa: When did you first know you wanted to write?...from an early age? Calley: It came to me really out of the blue. I was 12 years old and sitting at my father's gas station after school one day reading a Sweet Valley High novel when something sparked an idea for my own young adult story. I didn't have the slightest clue how to write a book and had no guidance other than referring to one of the many books I read often but I picked up a pencil and a notebook and starting putting my idea on paper. Eventually my parents read some of the things I wrote and encouraged me to follow my talent. They enrolled me in a correspondence school through the Institute for Children's Literature and from there I learned how to format manuscripts correctly and how to reach people in the publishing world. Lisa: Your "Lindsey Dyson Mystery Series" reminds me of Robert B. Parkers Spenser novels. How did you start writing these ongoing mysteries? Calley: I'm sorry to say I haven't read any of his books. I'll have to check them out.

Fiction Christmas
Exploring the Meaning of Tradition
Marilyn Brown Tells
A Tale Based on Time-Honored
Conventions
Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, award-winning author of "This is the Place" and "Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered"
A tale told time and again, each in a form slightly different from the original, is a vital part of the tradition of story telling. It is a convention older than Homer's Iliad and as honored as a revered ancestor. It is a process that I find so fascinating that my most recent book, "Harkening," explores the process. Then, coincidentally, Marilyn Brown's "The Light in the Room" falls into my hands to review. It is a book that follows that age-old practice. She has exhumed an old prize-winning novel ("Goodbye, Hello") and brought it to life again for the Christmas season. Needless to say, I found her book absorbing. It brings the art of personal history to life. It illustrates that a good story that never grows stale. This is a special Christmas edition. It begins: "It would soon be Christmas. There was a taste of cinnamon and apples in the air." Although the protagonist is nearly 90, she has not lost her sense of smell or imagination. She is an affirmation of life.

Release Date: January, 2000
Alexis Berkley is normally a popular teenager and this had made her feel confident and good about herself, so much so that her friends catch her admiring herself in her bedroom mirror. But of late she thinks there may be something wrong with her. Her best friends dispute this. Alexis receives an anonymous letter from a secret admirer and her imagination runs riot and gets her into various scrapes such as deciding that Kip who is the hunkiest boy in the school with a Scorpio personality is definitely the one. The author plays this character’s personality true to form and has her heroine falling for him and in much defence of him, to later feel embarrassed after discovering the Romeo sting in Kip’s tail. Alexis learns that she needs to listen to the good advice different people around her offer her and that Kip didn’t acquire his nickname for no reason.
