85. The Rights (and Wrongs) Of Ayn Rand
An analysis of ethical egoism and its link to individual rights.
http://personal.bgsu.edu/~roberth/rand.html
The Rights (and Wrongs) of Ayn Rand Robert Bass No thinker, perhaps, has had more influence upon contemporary libertarians than the novelist and non-academic philosopher, Ayn Rand. For that reason alone, her case for libertarian rights deserves attention. Also important is the fact that her arguments are interesting in their own right and have often been misunderstood, misrepresented or ignored. As George Smith has commented, “there has appeared relatively little in the way of competent reflection on Ayn Rand as philosopher. Accounts ... written by [her] admirers are frequently eulogistic and uncritical, whereas accounts written by her antagonists are often hostile and, what is worse, embarrassingly inaccurate.” At least four factors have combined to discourage serious attention to her work by academic philosophers. First, she was prima facie unworthy of attention because her views were developed and expressed not in scholarly treatises but in novels and – later – in articles in which philosophical discussion was fused with cultural commentary and political advocacy. Her writing was often rhetorical and hyperbolic, directed to the mass readership accessible to a best-selling author instead of to the rather more critical audiences of the output of university presses. A second factor leading to neglect was that the particular positions she held – including an uncompromising defense of rational self-interest in ethics and of laissez-faire capitalism – were quite distant from the overwhelming mainstream consensus (when she wrote) in favor of some form of welfare-state liberalism. A further factor which has contributed to neglect of Rand’s ideas is that her arguments are often informal and inductive. They are presented by way of her fiction, and, so far as this is the case, it is left to the reader to judge the psychological and social plausibility of dramatizations of her principles and their alternatives. Finally, and least excusably, Rand invited neglect, contempt, and opposition by employing her considerable rhetorical skills to denounce anyone who disagreed with her and especially “modern philosophers” as evil, corrupt, and irrational

Memories of Ayn Rand
by John Hospers
When Marcel Proust tasted his famous cup of tea with madeleine, the experience of that unique taste evoked in him such a flood of recollections that it filled seven volumes ( Remembrance of Things Past Three days ago when I was invited by Full Context to record a few recollections of my acquaintance with Ayn Rand, I thought I could make it quick and easy. But in the ensuing hours, a flood of memories overcame me, many of them long buried, and now resurrected after an interval of 35 years, as vividly as if they were occurring at this moment. It was April 1960, and I can still hear her delivering her lecture at Brooklyn College: "Faith and Force, the Destroyers of the Modern World." I remember agreeing with her about both faith and force, but I didn’t follow the implications of everything she said about the modern world. I remember inviting her to lunch afterwards, and she graciously consented to give me an hour. Five hours later, we were still engaged in animated conversation in the coffee shop. It was a totally new experience for me—the systematic character of her thought, together with her childlike benevolence, the keen piercing eyes, the deep voice which could warm you and freeze you by turns—and the uncompromising rigor of her argument. Our conversation skirted over a wide range of different subjects. I was at that time finishing my book on ethics (my

89. Ayn Rand: A Sense Of Life . The Boston Phoenix . 04-06-98
Review by Nicholas Patterson says that this is less a documentary than a 145minute panegyric to the author/philosopher.

Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life
DIRECTED BY: Michael Paxton
REVIEWED:
For a film about the founder of Objectivism, Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life is not very objective. Less a documentary than a 145-minute panegyric to the author/philosopher, the movie plays as a long testament to the triumph of Ayn Rand's will. Writer/director Michael Paxton tries to illustrate the artist's ideas, to portray her sense of life. Unfortunately, only half a picture emerges. There are lots of interviews with friends and admirers but none with critics. Opposition to her ideas is blamed on the prejudices of liberals and Communists. Questionable actions by Ms. Rand, such as testifying as a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee and writing a pamphlet against Communist screenwriting, are brushed over. The best parts of the documentary are excerpts of television interviews with Ms. Rand: the author comes across as a provocative thinker who was eager to address criticism. Too bad Paxton didn't take a similar attitude in this documentary. Nicholas Patterson Full Length Reviews

Libertarianism
An Objective Evaluation
By Logan Feys
"Libertarianism" has driven a wedge through organized Objectivism, dividing it into two disparate camps. On one side of the rift are those who openly embrace libertarianism. On the other are those who denounce libertarianism as "an evil doctrine." Which side in this debate should a rational person favor? If objectivity is the guide, the answer is neither Organized Objectivism's False Dichotomy The "official" Objectivist movement is led by the self-proclaimed intellectual heir of Ayn Rand, Leonard Peikoff, and his cohorts at the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) . The view of libertarianism as inherently evil was not articulated by Ayn Rand herself, but by ARI Chairman of the Board Peter Schwartz in his article "Libertarianism: the Perversion of Liberty" (republished in The Voice of Reason: Essays in Objectivist Thought According to Schwartz, there is no need to judge libertarians on an individual basis because, he alleges, evil is "inherent" in libertarianism itself. Viewing the ARI hierarchy's attacks on libertarians as tantamount to "the behavior of religious zealots," former ARI scholar David Kelley, who was formally denounced by Peikoff in 1989 for speaking to a group of libertarians, strives to promote a more open and "tolerant" brand of Objectivism (see

Essays on Ayn Rand's Objectivism
Home E-mail me at SandGRyan@att.net Ayn Rand (1905-1982), born Alissa Rosenbaum, is believed by many of her followers to have been in some way remarkable as a philosopher. At one time, up until as recently as late 1998 or early 1999, I described (and regarded) myself as a somewhat sympathetic critic of Objectivism and thought there might possibly be something salvageable in Rand's philosophy if one stuck as close as possible to her political theory. (I'm a "green libertarian"/classical-liberal/free-market-capitalist myself.) My mind was changed in part by a close and thorough examination of her epistemological writings and in part by (thanks to the Internet) extensive correspondence with lots of people who have tried to put her principles into practice. My own evaluation of her is now very different indeed from that of her followers, and in my book Objectivism and the Corruption of Rationality: A Critique of Ayn Rand's Epistemology , I attack the very foundation and centerpiece of her philosophy: her allegedly groundbreaking work in epistemology, from which "Objectivism" takes its name. http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/R/randayn/1.html
Rand, Ayn
American novelist and philosopher, whose championing of the gifted individual established her as a controversial figure in 20th-century literary and philosophical debate. Rand upheld individualism over collectivism and egoism over altruism. She staunchly defended reason as the tool that sustains and nourishes the individual against the forces that can weaken it.
Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Rand immigrated to the United States in 1926. She worked sporadically as a screenwriter and script reader in Hollywood, California, until 1943. Her first two novels, We the Living (1936) and Anthem (1938), portray dystopias and dictatorships as warnings against monolithic sociopolitical systems such as Communism and Fascism.
Atlas Shrugged (1957), a lengthy and popular novel, depicted five characters in a fictional America moving toward a bizarre form of socialism. The book was criticized for its severe characterizations and raised concerns about the harshness of Rand's search for the perfect egoist. After the book's publication, Rand stopped writing fiction. She worked as a public speaker and began to publish a newsletter, first called The Objectivist Newsletter (1962-1965), then The Objectivist (1966-1971), and later The Ayn Rand Letter (1971-1975). Her increasing visibility as a lecturer on objectivism led her to write the nonfiction books The Virtue of Selfishness: A Concept of New Egoism (1964) and Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology (1967).

l Certainty Plus Books by the author of The Certainty Site Your Way Considers influence and persuasion in the light of free will. It concludes that persuasion done right is neither risky nor tricky, but a useful use of reason. Mental Action Describes Ayn Rand's theory of concepts in a way that connects with what you see and know. It shows how to remove mystery from thought, and add joy. Mental Skill Tells how to apply Ayn Rand's epistemology to your life. Each chapter includes theory, and a section on practicing to increase the skills discussed. The Moron Manual Makes a point by poking fun at the moral inversion that considers dumb more sympathetic than smart. What if Immanuel Kant wrote a how-to book? Mental Mistakes Discusses mental passivity and subjectivity, by showing how they affect the way markets are viewed. It shows how to make sense of trade, and of life.

Ayn Rand and Objectivism:
An Introduction The author
The founder of Objectivism, Ayn Rand (neé Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum), was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 2, 1905. Ayn Rand attended Petrograd (Leningrad) University from 1921 to 1924 in the tumultuous period following the Revolution, where she majored in history, and took a minor in philosophy. In early 1926, Ayn Rand fled the Soviet Union and arrived in New York City, during the "Roaring Twenties." It was her relatives in Chicago who made it possible for her to leave the Soviet Union, and with whom she first stayed after arriving in the U.S. After changing her name to Ayn Rand, she left Chicago for Hollywood, and eventually found work as a reader at Cecil B. DeMille's studio. On the set of DeMille's King of Kings , she spied a tall, handsome man named Frank O'Connorand they were married in 1929. During the Depression, Rand began to focus on her writing, producing several short stories and plays (these early works are collected in The Early Ayn Rand ) as well as Night of January 16th ("Penthouse Legend" on Broadway)
