saic home ... awards Parody on Trial Alice Randall Writing In-Sanity By Lamaretta Simmons All eyes are on first time novelist, Alice Randall, and her bid to have her book, The Wind Done Gone , released from the throes of the American Courts. The Wind Done Gone is a parody of Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel, Gone with The Wind , which is considered by many one of the hallmarks of great American literature about the slave south. Randall chose to parody GWTW , after years of coping with what she has termed the "racist lies and racist language" of the text.
GWTW and would inhibit licensing of any other sequels or offspring of GWTW and offered instead that Randall's book is a form of literary piracy and is a derivative work, infringing on the intellectual property rights of Mitchell.
In April, a federal judge, agreeing with the Mitchell Trusts, blocked publication of Randall's novel. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta overturned the injunction in May, allowing for the book's publication. Despite borrowing several scenes and lines of dialogue from the original novel, Randall and her publishers insist the book is an original work of serious parody and is protected by the First Amendment.
Several academic and literary heavyweights have come out in support of Randall, including Toni Morrison, Harper Lee, Arthur Schlessinger, and Ishmael Reed. Randall, though upset that the book is in legal conflict, said that the support from the literary world has been wonderful.

The production of peaches, apples and berries claims the time and attention of Allen M. Randall, one of the successful horticulturists of Bainbridge township. He was born May 1, 1842, in Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada, and was only six years of age when he came to the United States with his uncle, James I. Randall Mr. Randall and his brother William sold goods in Millburg for a period of fifteen years, beginning in 1865. They also operated a sawmill and grist mill and other industries a part of the time. All of his children were born during their residence in Millburg. On the 13th of January, 1870, Mr. Randall was united in marriage to Miss Adelaide M. Sutherland, a daughter of William Sutherland. She was born on the farm where she now lives on the 29th of November, 1846, and with the exception of a few years has always resided upon this place. She represents one of the old prominent and honored families of Berrien county. Bestsellers: Beyond the Book
The Most Popular Novel in American Fiction
When Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone with the Wind, she did not merely tell a story about the Civil War. Instead, she wrote herself into literary history and planted her book in our national consciousness. In hindsight, we can see that no other novel so clearly epitomizes the cultural impact of bestselling fiction. With a story, both archetypal and timely, that touches on war, love, jealousy, and loss, the book has appealed to a broad audience from the moment of its publication. Although critics have attacked the literary merit of Gone with the Wind, the novel stays fresh and compelling, and the narrative has become a part of our cultural knowledge. Most who have neither read the book nor seen the movie are familiar with Rhett's "'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn'" and Scarlett's "'After all, tomorrow is another day.'" Gone with the Wind, the first blockbuster novel of the twentieth century, remains a powerful presence in American culture at the turn of a new century. Scarlett O'Hara beckons to us still, and Rhett Butler continues to charm new readers in this thousand-page historical saga. Facts and Figures

    http://www.wnyc.org/studio360/commentary050501.html
I always like it when expectations are confounded, and stereotypes defied. For instance, it pleases me that the woman who wrote this middle-american middle-of-the-road song for the country music star Trisha Yearwood…is a 42-year-old African American woman who went to Harvard. Alice Randall is the songwriter's name, and - to further defy the stereotypes - she's also a serious novelist. Her first book is called The Wind Done Gone, and it has an excellent postmodern premise it's the diary of Scarlett O'Hara's half-sister, a slave half-sister invented by Randall, who outlives Scarlett and marries Rhett Buttler. Essentially, it's Gone With the Wind and Tara re-imagined from the slaves', not the slaveholders,' point of view. For instance, in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind the slave Prissy famously says… "I don't know nothin' bout birthin' babies!" In Randall's The Wind Done Gone, Prissy's not a comic ditz at all, but cleverly fakes hysterical incompetence in order to cover up a crime. And the character based on Ashley Wilkes in the new novel is, at last…overtly gay.

Camping With the Sioux: Fieldwork Diary of Alice Cunningham Fletcher
October 25, 1881 10:30 A.M. Started for Fort Randall. The horses without water. We went some mile or more out of our way, passing in the dark our camping place and camping only a short distance from the forks. Wajapa said the white people lost a month, as they reckoned time. The Indians had 13 months, the white man but 12. The Indian watched the moon until it died and then they knew a new one would come. They all begged me not to write of this great mistake in camping, for the Indians, if they got hold of it, would never cease laughing. Reached Fort Randall about 2 P.M. Called on the Commander of the Post, Col. George L. Andrews. After a little conversation, Mrs. A. appeared. A New England lady. She graciously received me, and I became their guest. The rest were camped on Stony Point, a pretty spot near to water and the pasturage fair for the horses. Fort Randall established in 1854. Then there was much trouble with the Indians. Two of the block houses remain. In these houses the women and children were sent for safety, and sometimes kept for weeks. Mrs. Dean, wife (bride) of Lieut. Dean, was born here. She remembers seeing the hills black with Indians, threatening the Post.

Camping With the Sioux: Fieldwork Diary of Alice Cunningham Fletcher
Monday, October 24, 1881 I started off alone and walked up the hill. Boundless prairie met my view. Prairie chickens rose at the sound of my steps - saw footprints. One can easily see how these people notice them so well, there is a sort of companionship in them and in the midst of the wonderful solitude. Wajapa had said that a white horse should be given him at Fort Randall. A white horse is a lucky gift. This he said the night of the Cinderella story, so I sang out, "De-ga-ba, shong-ga skar". He laughed and bye and bye after many shouts arose. Buffalo-chip and his wife were really troubled yesterday because S. threw salt on the fire. "It would surely bring bad weather". Many little birds are homeless on the burnt prairie. As we rode hundreds, if not thousands of buffalo birds flew over the prairie, flying not more than three or four feet from the ground, their wings flashing in the sunlight and looking like a flurry of driving snow. It was wonderful to watch them against the horizon. This A.M., I started ahead to block out the sketch of the camp and "The Mother’s Ford", as I want the place called. I waited long and then saw that the buggy and team had started on, so I

And by the colonial powers of Europe having complete control over Africa, they projected Africa always in a negative light-jungles, savages, cannibals, nothing civilized. And you and I began to hate it. We didn't want anybody to tell us anything about Africa, and much less call us an African. And in hating Africa and hating the Africans, we end up hating ourselves, without even realizing it. Because you can't hate the roots of a tree and not hate the tree. You can't hate Africa and not hate yourself." Malcolm X always emphasized the importance of knowing African American culture and history. Today, we are going to look at some sketches of African American culture. The Wind Done Gone is Alice Randall's "unauthorized parody" of Gone with the Wind , the 1936 epic saga by Margaret Mitchell. More than any other, that classic story of Scarlett O'Hara has defined the country's image of the antebellum South.
