Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin Detective Sergeant John Rebus, the protagonist of Knots and Crosses , is a divorced, borderline-alcoholic, Edinburgh policeman, working on a serial killer case while also being bothered by anonymous notes containing knotted pieces of string and crossed matchsticks. His brother, meanwhile, may be tied up in the Edinburgh drug trade, which is being investigated by a local reporter. As the murders mount up, it begins to seem that the killer may be someone from Rebus' past, and that the killings may be aimed at him specifically. It seems to me, reading this book in 2001, that there is much that is familiar here. The depressed, hard-drinking British detective is a well-known character from a number of sources, perhaps taken to an extreme in Irvine Welsh's Filth , but with Inspector Morse among others fitting the bill (no pun intended) as well. Similarly, there have been a number of literary and cinematic efforts recently portraying the seamier side of Scotland (think Irvine Welsh again). And of course, the whole serial-killer-with-a-personal-tie-to-the-detective thing has been done to death and beyond by Hollywood in recent years. It should be borne in mind that Knots and Crosses was first published in 1987, and was thus somewhat more original when written than it seems now, but the fact remains that quite a lot of the book seems old hat.

When an author as successful as Rankin has been with his tough and idiomatic Scottish thrillers, a problem sets in after several books: how to keep the formula fresh. Rankin has delivered a powerful series of books featuring his beleaguered Detective Inspector John Rebus, and while never less than gripping, a certain tiredness seemed to be setting in. Thankfully, Dead Souls is a resounding return to form, with a plot as enjoyably labyrinthine as any Rankin enthusiast could wish for, and pithy dialogue that fairly leaps off the page. Stalking the streets of Edinburgh on the trail of a poisoner, Rebus hits upon a freed pedophile and his subsequent outing of the man leaves him with very mixed feelings. But another problem develops for Rebus: a convicted murderer has him in his sights for some lethal games. And the tabloid press lionizing of Rebus won't help him in this situation. As always, Rankin is perfectly ready to tackle contentious issuesprecisely the thing that gives his books their powerful sense of veracity. And Rebus, no longer in danger of having a soap opera-like accumulation of personal problems, seems as fresh and well-observed a character as in those first exhilarating books. Rankin has caught his form again, with even more assurance.

Interview with ian rankin by Jon Jordan. Jon Is there any of ian rankinin John Rebus? ian A bit. The music; the loner; the drinking
http://www.booksnbytes.com/auth_interviews/ian_rankin.html
Interview with Ian Rankin
by Jon Jordan Jon:
For people who may live in a cave and not read any of your books yet, could you give a brief rundown of the series? Ian: John Rebus is a police detective working in contemporary Edinburgh and exposing a side of that elegant city which tourists and visitors never see. He's a loner, a fighter, not much of a lover. The job is his only salvation. The city itself is a central character in the series, and beyond that each book tries to focus on one part of modern-day Scotland, so that the series itself becomes a jigsaw, laying out where the country's going, and how it got to where it is. Jon: Is there any of Ian Rankin in John Rebus? Ian: A bit. The music; the loner; the drinking... But I'm nicer than him; maybe not quite so fucked up. Long time ago, he was a cipher merely, a way of telling my stories, then he started infecting me... now there's more of him in me than ever before. Addictive poison. Jon: A lot of authors have had some strange jobs before they get published. What kind of things have you done before you were able to write full time? Ian: Lots of weird jobs. I looked after pigs, but killed one by ODing it with alcohol. I collected tax from people, that was fun. I sang in a punk band, worked as a secretary in the National Folktale Centre in London; was a hi-fi/music journalist. I worked as an alcohol researcher (asking kids about their drinking habits). Lots of strange shit.

Page 1 Important works: Ian Rankin is known for his series of crime novels featuring Detective Inspector John Rebus, middle-aged, boozey, divorced and still struggling in relationships, with some dark side of his own which creates a sense of empathy with the criminal underclass he encounters. His first Rebus novel, Knots and Crosses (1987) was quickly followed by eleven others including Mortal Causes The Hanging Garden (1998) and Dead Souls Black and Blue , considered near faultless by critics, won the Crime Writers' association Gold Dagger in 1997. A collection of short stories, A Good Hanging and Other Stories , appeared in 1992. Published under a variant name, Jack Harvey, are three other novels, Witch Hunt Bleeding Hearts (1994) and Blood Line Rankin's work is phenomenally popular. The Rebus novels have sold over 100,000 copies each in the last three years and at any one time Rankin has had up to six of his books in the Scottish Top Ten lists.
