(3.4 cu. ft.) Historical Note
Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the records of the Director of The School of Letters, incumbent Newton P. Stallknecht. The records date between 1947 and 1979, although Stallknecht was only officially the director from 1953 to 1972. The bulk of the collection is comprised of office files from the School of Letters and correspondence between Stallknecht and other faculty and guest lecturers. The diverse faculty correspondence files demonstrate the excellence of the IU School of Letters and the international acclaim it received. The collection includes correspondence with numerous famous American poets and critics, such as as Randall Jarrell (1914-1965) and John Crowe Ransom (1888-1974), as well as noted foreign scholars, including the French Existentialist philospher, Jean Wahl (1888-1974). The collection also includes a sample of School of Letters student files and files repesenting his general university activities as Director of the School of Letters.

John Crowe Ransom - (1888-1974) Pulaski By Nekel Worlds
Tennessee State University, Tennessee I. Introduction Ransom, an American poet, critic and man of letters, was a major proponent of new Criticism. Like most southern writers of his period, his principal theme was the decay of southern lifestyles, beliefs and integrity. John Crowe Ransom, a member of the Fugitive group at Vanderbilt University, is known for his poetry, which allows for individual readers' interpretation. II. Biography John Crowe Ransom was born on April 30, 1888 in Pulaski, Tennessee, the next to the youngest of four children, two boys and two girls, of John James Ransom and the former Ella Crowe. Throughout his boyhood he lived in succession of small towns in central Tennessee as his father, a Methodist minister, moved from one congregation to another. His family was deep-rooted within the South and Ransom's granduncle had been a founder and member of the Ku Klux Klan. Ransom attended the Bowen School in Nashville, graduating in 1903. At the age of fifteen he entered Vanderbilt University, which at the time he majored in Latin and Greek studies. Ransom later majored in classics and philosophy until, in the fall of 1905, a shortage of funds force him to interrupt his studies at Vanderbilt University for two years of high school teaching. He returned to Vanderbilt in June 1907, graduating in 1909 with a B.A. degree and the University's Founder's Medal, its highest academic honor. The following year Ransom received a Rhodes Scholarship that sent him to Christ Church College, Oxford.

One type, cultural pluralism, accepts diversity as intrinsic and inevitable. The other, particularism, favors an esoteric cultural group which, having been ignored, must now be brought to light. This essay attacks particularism as a misguided denial of the existence of any common culture in the United States. Add 4 pp.

A TRIBUTE TO JOHN CROWE RANSOM A tribute to John Crowe Ransom, on the occasion of his appearence at the Guggenheim Museum Auditorium, under the auspices of the Academy of American Poets, on December 19, 1963. Read by the author at the Guggenheim Museum, this is its first publication. The left column contains the original copy of the tribute, including Warren's editorial notation. This is a very happy occasion for all of us. But I want to insist on my own pleasure in being able to say how much I owe to John Crowe Ransom, and to say how grateful I am for this long friendship. Allen Tate has expressed his own attachment and admiration. as Cal Lowell, another old student and friend would have had he been present. But I am sure that we speak for many other people even for many others who never had the opportunity of sitting in John Ransom's classroom.
We are here to honor as best we can a man and a poet of rare quality and distinction. In a special sense, the man and the poet are scarcely to be separated. The two exist for us in an almost unique, mutually fulfilling harmony in a peculiar blend of strength and gentleness, of wit and sympathy, of tough integrity and invincible gaity of spirit. His special tone of being is the most significant thing he has given his friends. In the poems it is what he has given the world.
In the long period since Chils and Fever and Twho Gentlemen in Bonds were published, we have heard many new voices, some of them strong and beautiful. But over and over again, in moments of silence, there is that voice speaking
