Famous Floridians: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
Marjorie began writing at the early age of 6. When she was only 11, she received a $2 prize for a story published in the Washington Post. She went on to become a journalist in the 1920s and, as such, she was something of a trailblazer.
Rawlings came to Florida to visit in 1926 and fell in love with the land. Two years later, she returned to buy 72 acres at Cross Creek, near Gainesville, dividing her time between growing oranges and writing fiction.
In 1938, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for The Yearling, her best-known work about a young boy named Jody who lives in rural Florida, and adopts an orphaned fawn as a pet. As both the boy and the fawn grow, Jody struggles with the practical hardships of life on a farm, family relationships and expectations, and his responsibilities as he approaches adulthood. This story was based on actual events. However, in real life it was a girl who adopted the fawn.
Several of her books have been made into movies including The Yearling and a semiautobiographical work entitled Cross Creek. In this book, she describes how she first arrived in Florida and came to love its rural way of life, despite the hardships it entailed. Rawlings, who loved food, entertaining, and growing vegetables and herbs, followed Cross Creek with the publication of Cross Creek Cookery.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Elementary School opened August 1992 to service grades 3 -5. The school was built on property adjacent to the existing Ponte Vedra - Palm Valley Elementary School, which houses grades K-2. Our school is named in honor of the author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (see photo at left) whose works demonstrated life in rural Florida. She received the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for The Yearling, a story that tells the conflict between people and nature in the 1870's. In 1942, she published Cross Creek, a humorous description of her life in Florida. The indoor facility includes classrooms for third, fourth, and fifth grades. The building contains art and music resource rooms, plus two computer labs. The media center includes a broadcasting lab, darkroom, professional and student libraries. A multi-purpose room is utilized for indoor physical education classes, stage performances, and converts into a lunchroom for students on a daily basis. The outdoor facilities include basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer field, baseball field, and a fully equipped playground.

Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan
American novelist, whose works explore the need for humans to live in harmony with the natural environment. Her books reflect her love of the land, particularly the land and people of north central Florida. In 1938 Rawlings was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her young adult novel The Yearling (1938), the popular and critical success of which made her one of the most beloved of American children's authors.
She was born Marjorie Kinnan in Washington, D.C. After her father died in 1913, she moved with her mother and brother to Madison, Wisconsin, where she soon enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1918 with a B.A. degree in English. The next year she married fellow writer Charles A. Rawlings, Jr., and moved with him to Rochester, New York, where she worked as a newspaper writer. In 1928 Rawlings purchased an orange grove in Cross Creek, Florida, where she and her husband subsequently moved to restore the farm to working condition. After divorcing her husband in 1933, Rawlings stayed in Cross Creek. She married Norton Sanford Baskin, a restaurant and hotel operator, in 1941.
The rural atmosphere of her surroundings in Florida inspired Rawlings to write fiction, including the novels Jacob's Ladder (1931), which was originally published as a short story, and South Moon Under (1933), as well as a emiautobiographical work entitled Cross Creek (1943). It describes how she first arrived in Florida and came to love its rural way of life, despite the hardships it entailed. The book was made into a motion picture in 1983.

http://hipp.gru.net/mkrprofile.html
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Writing Profile Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, like many authors who write about a specific environment, developed a writing style often referred to as local color or regional writing. Below is a description of these categories of writing. See if you can name other authors who use these writing styles. Local Color Authors who use this style of writing often create characters based in a small, distinct region. These characters usually have a regional dialect and are presented as stereotypes in a generally humorous and sympathetic fashion. Other common themes/features found in local color writing are the goodness and earthiness of plain country folk and the slow disappearance of rural culture in an urban, industrialized society. Local color writers tend to present the exterior view of the characters and their situations. Some of these writers include Mark Twain, Joel Chandler Harris and Sarah Orne Jewett. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ books T he Yearling and The Secret River are often categorized as local color writing.

Biographical Note: Marjorie Kinnan was born on 8 August 1896 in Washington D.C. She studied English at the University of Wisconsin where she wrote for both the school yearbook and its literary magazine. After she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1918, she went to New York City where she worked for the YWCA while trying to sell her short stories and poetry.
In 1919, Kinnan married Chuck Rawlings whom she had met at university. The couple moved to Louisville, Kentucky where they both worked on the local newspaper. Subsequently, they moved to Rochester, New York. Rawlings continued to work as a journalist but still could not sell her stories. A 1928 vacation in Florida led to her solving that problem. The couple fell in love with the state; sold their home in Rochester, and moved to Cross Creek, Florida. Inspired by the people that she met and the surroundings in which she lived, Rawlings work finally won approval. Her short story "Gal Young Un" won the O. Henry Memorial Short Story Contest in 1933, and her first novel South Moon Under was chosen by the Book–of-the-Month Club as its monthly recommendation. 1933 was not, however, such a good year in her private life as she and Chuck divorced. Rawlings continued to live and write at Cross Creek. She published
