The Week's Famous and Infamous Women
We at the Creek need and have found only very simple things. We need above all, I think, a certain remoteness from urban confusion, and while this can be found in other places, Cross Creek offers it with such beauty and grace that once entangled with it, no other place seems possible to us, just as when truly in love none other offers the comfort of the beloved.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
Writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953)
When Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings became fed up with her marriage, her job as a reporter and her life in the northern United States, she moved by herself in 1928 to a 40-acre homestead in rural central Florida called Cross Creek. Marjorie expected to support herself from the proceeds of the homestead's citrus groves, but she was unprepared for the climate and the sheer work involved in making such an enterprise work. However, she grew to love her adopted home as she learned about all the surrounding plants and trees, cooked three meals a day on a wood-burning stove, and washed clothes in an iron pot. She also began to write, and her most famous novel, The Yearling , won the Pulitzer Prize. Marjorie wrote several other novels and short stories, and her home at Cross Creek is now the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Site managed by the Florida Parks Service. Marjorie was born on August 8, 1896, and died on December 14, 1953.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawling's House
My grandmother lives about a half a mile from Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's house. My grandmother knows all about it because she used to work there. I have been there before. It's a lot of fun because I like to watch all of the chickens. I looked in one of the windows one day and I saw a kitty cat sitting on her living room couch. She has a white car sitting on her driveway. It looks like an old timer car. It has a picture of her in the car window.
When you first get to her house the ladies that work there let you look at her photo albums. Then they take you for a tour through her house. They show you all the rooms and where Mrs. Rawlings slept. That is what my grandma told me about Marjorie Kinnan Rawling's house. "Cross Creek is a bend in a country road, by land, and the flowing of Lochloosa Lake into Orange Lake, by water. We are four miles west of the small village of Island Grove, nine miles east of a turpentine still, and on the other sides we do not count distance at all, for the two lakes and the broad marshes create an infinite space between us and the horizon."

67. Undset-Rawlings Brev
IGeorge A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida i Gainesville
http://www.nb.no/html/undset-rawlings_brev.html

Cross Creek Author: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Edward Shenton Format: Paperback, 380pp Pub. Date: February 1996 Publisher: ISBN: Book Review Customer Reviews (from Amazon.com) Review #1 Ranking 5 Cross Creek is one of the finest memoirs ever written, filled with the grace and beauty of fine writing from one of America's greatest writers, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Perhaps no other writer has so perfectly and honestly captured a place and time like Rawlings did in Cross Creek. It will transport you to that small acreage of backwoods Florida and cause you to wish for a life such as this. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings purchased a seventy-two acre orange grove in this remote area and fled her aristocratic life in the city to perfect her craft and get published. It is here all her beloved books would be born, including this memoir covering the years of hardships and beauty at the creek. Rawlings herself would become a part of the earth and land as she was reborn here in Cross Creek and would leave behind literary achievements such as South Moon Under, Golden Apples, When the Whipporwll, Cross Creek Cookery, and of course, her Pulitzer winner, The Yearling. Her close relationships with her neighbors at the creek, both black and white, are told with humor and humanity. Their lives were often filled with hardships but serenity as well, for all of them had chosen to live this kind of life rather than conform to society. Especially poignant are Rawlings's observations of a young destitute (even for the creek) couple who would be portrayed so movingly in her short story, Jacob's Ladder.
