http://web1.caryacademy.org/upperschool/humanities/humanitiestimeline/reednaming
Henry Reed’s “Naming of Parts” Casey Samulski Advertisement: “Naming of Parts” is a poem, written by Henry Reed, which illustrates his anti-war sentiments through a series of drill sergeant instructions. It was written during the World War II era, and is considered to be a defining piece literature about the war, showing the true progression of society through the comparison of people to nature. Artifact’s online text can be found at: http://barney.gonzaga.edu/~mquieto/papers/reed.html “Naming of Parts” is a poem by Henry Reed, an anti-war poet who questions the progress of society in the World War II era. Reed was born in Birmingham, England, in 1914, at the beginning of World War I. When drafted into the army, he wrote to his sister about what he thought of the army training, which would later become the subject of his poem, “Naming of Parts.”(Stallworthy Introduction to Collected Poems) “Naming of Parts” begins with the narration of a sergeant to his troops about each part of a rifle. The sheer tedium of his speech about each piece of the gun conveys the terribly slow life of a soldier.

Synchromism: The Henry M. Reed Collection

May 1 - August 30, 1999
For the month of May, Hollis Taggart Galleries will be exhibiting a rare and important body of work by two premier American Modernists. The collection of ten original works on paper, two vintage exhibition posters (with original art work) from 1913, and an extraordinary group of archival documents will be on view at the gallery, located at 48 East 73rd Street, New York, NY, 10021 (between Park and Madison Avenues.) Amassed by the collector, Mr. Henry M. Reed, this compilation of material provides fascinating insights and a deeper understanding of the movement of Synchromism
Identified as a "manner of color painting," Synchromism was created through the collaborative efforts of two American artists, Stanton Macdonald-Wright (1890-1973, whose birth name was van Vranken), and Morgan Russell (1896-1953). The term, fabricated by Russell comes from

Henry Reed was born in 1914 and lived until 1986, dying due to serious physical
ailments of old age. Besides being written about by a very few people, his work has not been
the subject of much inquiry due more than likely to his mediumthe radio.
He is best known as a writer of plays and dramas for the BBC Feature
section that he was involved with after World War II until his death. His
main interest was classics and 19th century Italian poet Count Giacomo
Leopardi. He went to the University of Birmingham where he received a
honors degree in classics and literature...his main interest during his
schooling years was the work of Thomas Hardy and all through out his life
he was working on a mammoth biograpgy, which was never completed and never
published. He only published on slim offering of poetry called A Map of Verona . In it was the three part poem called " Lessons Of War ." We were given the second installment (" Judging Distances ") and the first part was called " Naming of Parts " and the third was " Unarmed Combat ." The first part, "

75. Another Chance For Columbus Circle, By Henry Hope Reed
Circle. by henry Hope reed. Columbus Circle is an ugly duckling thatpromises every decade to change into a swan—or at least a duck.
http://www.city-journal.org/html/9_2_urbanities_another_chance.html
Another Chance For Columbus Circle by Henry Hope Reed C So visible a project would be important anywhere in the city, but as architecture it is even more important because it abuts Central Park. Glorious as Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's design for the park may be, what sets this urban jewel apart from all other great parks in the world is its unique, extraordinary setting. What other park has so magnificent a frame? To see what I mean, just look at Brooklyn's Prospect Park by the same designers and note the absence of a frame. Splendid, to be sure, but without the same cosmopolitan swagger. Of course, when Central Park was built, the most conspicuous objects on the horizon were several distant church steeples. It is today's frame that gives the park such drama. In places, this frame is splendid of itself, nowhere more so than at Grand Army Plaza at the southeast corner, at Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, with its sumptuous Plaza hotel, its tiered Pulitzer Fountain, and its golden equestrian statue of William Tecumseh Sherman. To go a half-mile west to Columbus Circle is to journey from the sublime to the ridiculous. The traffic in the circle may be orderly, but the setting is chaotic. The proposed new development, though architecturally banal, provides an opportunity to do something better on this important site, and make Columbus Circle a complementary part of Central Park's frame rather than an eyesore. T he Circle had its origin in the 1860s, when the commissioners of Central Park transformed what had been known as the Bloomingdale Road, going from 59th to 155th Streets, into The Boulevard. The new thoroughfare's horsecar tracks circled at 59th Street to form a turnaround, and the Circle was born.
