The biography of John Reed (1887-1920)
American journalist and poet-adventurer whose life as a revolutionary writer ended in Russia but made him the hero of a generation of radical intellectuals. Reed became a close friend of V. I. Lenin and was an eyewitness to the 1917 October revolution, recording this event in his best-known book Ten Days That Shook The World (1920). Reed is buried with other Bolshevik heroes beside the Kremlin wall.
John Reed was born in Portland Oregon into a wealthy family. At college he joined the swimming team and the dramatics club, and served on the editorial board of the Harvard Monthly and Lampoon, and was class orator and poet. After graduating from Harvard in 1910 Reed travelled in England and Spain and upon his return to America started his career as a journalist in the leftist magazines. He was one of the leading socialists of the New Review and The Masses.
During this time Reed made close friends with Mabel Dodge, the rich hostess, who helped organize the 1913 Armory Show which brought Cubism to New York and who ran her salon at 23 Fifth Avenue. In 1913 Reed published his first book

Reed, John Shelton
Glorious Battle: The Cultural Politics of Victorian Anglo-Catholicism
Vanderbilt University Press, 1996, 357 pp., ISBN 0-8265-1274-7, $34.95
Reviewed by Robert Ellison, East Texas Baptist University
In Glorious Battle, John Shelton Reed identifies three stages in the history of Victorian Anglo-Catholicism. The first was the Oxford Movement, a "school of theology" that flourished between 1833 and 1845. The Movement's successor, Ritualism, is itself divided into two parts. To a large extent, it was an "ecclesiastical faction," a countercultural group whose members adopted a distinctive wardrobe, employed an esoteric vocabulary, and embraced "Roman" practices and doctrines such as confession, altar candles, eucharistic vestments, and belief in the Real Presence. Ritualism was not exclusively doctrinal, however; it was also a "social movement," a missionary and pastoral force noted for its guilds and societies, its evangelistic zeal, and its work in the urban slums (74). In a sense, these are three dissimilar phenomena grouped under a common name, but Reed also sees a common thread uniting these otherwise disparate movements. Throughout the nineteenth century, Anglo-Catholicism was characterized by conflict; Reed argues, in fact, that it "thrived on opposition" (xxiv). Ritualism's "glorious battles" were fought on many fronts. Some were fought in the home as confession, sisterhoods, and segregated worship threatened to undermine patriarchal authority and "Victorian family values" (203). Some were fought in the churches as congregations objected to, or even rioted against, liturgical innovations introduced by their Ritualist clergymen. Some battles were even fought in the courts as laws like the Public Worship Regulation Act of 1874 (PWRA) were used to prosecute clergymen for burning incense, lighting candles on the altar, or wearing "illegal stoles" (241).

Alumni Award History of the Alumni Award Since the inception of the award in 1931, the Alumni Association has honored 71 alumni. Selected annually by the nominating committee of the board of governors of the Alumni Association, each recipient has, through personal achievement, brought honor and distinction to himself and the School. John Shedd Reed, philanthropist, war veteran, and former chief executive officer of the Santa Fe Railway, was born in Chicago in 1917. He attended Chicago Latin School through the eighth grade and spent the next year in Paris. John entered Hotchkiss in the fall of 1931, the year of the polio epidemic, spending much of his time in the infirmary, not with polio, but with colds. As a result, John was sent for a year to Los Alamos Ranch School near Santa Fe, New Mexico, returning to Hotchkiss as an upper mid. He was graduated with the Class of 1935 two years later. Having always been fascinated with trains, John was co-chair of the Hotchkiss Railway Club and his quote in the yearbook read, “Now if you’d traveled in comfort by train.”
