Summer 2002
Master's Message and Reading Recommendations
July 2002
Dear Wilson Freshman: I am writing in my capacity as the Master of Wilson College, where you will live for the next two years. In a single year you have not only graduated from high school and have been accepted into Princeton, but have also probably celebrated your 18th birthday. Welcome to adulthood. A university is a truly wonderful place. You are being given the chance to spend four years in an intense process of discovery. You will get to do this in a beautiful setting, less than an hour away from two exciting cities, with unlimited access to one of the world's greatest libraries as well as sports and arts facilities, and surrounded with thousands of like-minded members of your generation. And let us not forget the more than 700 people whose main job is to teach and encourage you. Take a minute to think about this opportunity and another to thank your parents. You will also be challenged as you never have been before. You will have to decide what, when, where, and how much to study. You will meet an incredibly diverse group of people, with whom some of you will have to share a room. You will simultaneously have too much time to fill and too many things to do. You will face moral choices and will enjoy an unprecedented degree of freedom in which to make and live with them. It will be tougher than you might think, but also many times much more fun than you can imagine.

Learning Skills in Flexible Manufacturing
the staff of Elwood Regional High School has embarded on a major school improvement effort to enhance their students' understanding of technology
Improving their students' capacity to deal with technology is a priority for the staff of Elwood Regional High School in Deer Lake, Newfoundland. This focus makes up a significant part of the school improvement program. An important element of that program is a project involving robotics technology. Clifford Reid, who teaches technology-based courses, is piloting a course in flexible manufacturing techniques. Fifteen students are working with robotics systems, pneumatic manipulation systems, computer numerical control systems and design systems using computer aided design (CAD) technology, all in a simulated environment. Flexible Manufacturing 3220 consists of six components. The 15 students taking the course are divided into two production teams and each team is further divided into four smaller groups. In these groups students become familiar with each of the four systems by working on preset demonstrations and activities. Students are encouraged to be creative as they work with the equipment and develop diverse approaches to the tasks that are presented in the activities. The teams use the equipment on alternate days and when they are not in the technology room, they work on other aspects of the course. Each of the production teams has been affiliated with a production company. They correspond with the companies to study their production processes. In the final component of the course, each team designs a product, uses the equipment to set up a production process and makes the product.

Program 99-11-21-A To The Best of Our Knowledge from Wisconsin Public Radio It's tough to be a guy these days, just ask feminist Susan Faludi! She says a lot of men feel beaten down, even obsolete. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge , do men feel powerless? We'll talk with Susan Faludi, and football player-turned-writer Elwood Reid. Also, the best and worst fathers...in the animal kingdom SEGMENT 1: In "The Emperor's Embrace," Jeffrey Masson writes about fatherhood in the animal kingdom. Masson tells Jim Fleming that Emperor Penguin dads fast for months holding their eggs on their feet to keep them warm. He says the big primates and domestic dogs have no interest in fatherhood, but wolves are terrific dads! SEGMENT 2: Susan Faludi tries to explain why so many men feel powerless in her book "Stiffed." She tells Steve Paulson that some men feel their contributions to society are no longer valued and that they feel they have no place in a culture obsessed with celebrity, the young, and the new. Also, football player turned fiction writer, Elwood Reid , talks with Jim Fleming about his collection of short stories - "What Salmon Know." He says he likes to write about working class people and has lived many of the stories he tells.
