Mary Renault
Mary Renault was born in London, where her father was a doctor. She first went to Oxford with the idea of teaching, but decided that she wanted to be a writer instead, and that after taking her degree she should broaden her knowledge of human life. She then trained for three years as a nurse, and wrote her first published novel, Promise of Love. Her next three novels were written during off-duty time when serving in World War II. One of them, Return to Night, received the MGM award. After the war, she went to South Africa and settled at the Cape. She has traveled considerably in Africa and has gone up the east coast to Zanzibar and Mombasa. But it was her travels in Greece that resulted in her previous brilliant historical reconstructions of ancient Greece. The Last of the Wine, The King Must Die, The Bull from the Sea, The Mask of Apollo, Fire from Heaven, The Persian Boy, and The Praise Singer. In addition to the novels, she has written a biography of Alexander the Great, The Nature of Alexander.

In hatred as in love, we grow like the thing we brood upon. What we loathe, we graft into our very soul. Go with your fate, but not beyond. Beyond leads to dark places. I have decided to deal with all three of Renault's Alexander books in one fell swoop. Though twelve years separate the publishing dates, and the styles differ in point of view from the distant third person limited of Fire From Heaven to the intimate first person of The Persian Boy , they should be treated as a whole. The books are not, by any means, perfect. But then, few books by any author, even pulitzer winners, could be said to be perfect. Some of the problems with these are unavoidable fall-out from the passage of time. When Ms. Renault first penned Fire From Heaven , Macedonian studies as a sub-discipline of Greek history had not really begun: Charles Edson, Nick Hammond and Harry Dell were just beginning to garner interest in Macedonia itself, not just in Alexander or Philip. (Papers from the first International Symposium on Ancient Macedonia appeared in 1970, and the first volume of Hammond's massive 3-volume History of Macedonia appeared in 1972). Manolis Andronikos had not yet uncovered the famous royal tombs at Vergina, and there was little discussion (much less controversy) regarding the "Greekness" of the ancient Macedonians.

The Macedonian

William Heinemann, c1933 (no ISBN)
[no cover worth reproducing]
Although she died at only 45, Mary Butts still managed to leave a mark on the literary world of English women's fiction. The span of her life encompassed the end of the romantic period and, like Bercovici's and Mann's, her novel falls into that literary tradition. Philosophic speculation, extended poetic metaphors and short narrator digressions abound in a way more reminiscent of Henry James than of Toni Morrison. Likewise, Butts' history reflects the knowledge and assumptions of her time. She presents the division between Greek and barbarian (which includes the Macedonians) as a division between Apollonic reason and Dionysic passion, perhaps predictably using Philip and Olympias to embody the contrast. Alexander is a mixture of both, suffering from psychological war between the two. And it's that psychological war which is, of course, Butts' very Platonic theme: the battle of the light horse against the dark. If based on history, this is not an historically accurate book, even given what was known of Alexander in the 1920s and 30s. We have the historically implausible collaboration between Philip and Aristotle well before Alexander's birth, idealistically plotting the future education of this boy who would be king. Ptolemy's place is too prominent and romanticized. (She even calls "handsome" this man with a face like an old shoe.) Kleitos comes across as a bit of a bucolic fool, and Kallisthenes is the soul of democratic-philosophic courage.

After receiving her nursing degree in 1936, she emigrated to South Africa. She was best-known for her historical novels about ancient Greece and Rome, including The King Must Die The Mask of Apollo Fire from Heaven (1970), and The Persian Boy (1973). Renault's works often revolve around homosexuality and the struggles of men and women to forge a sexual identity; this struggle is the central focus of The Charioteer (1955), a study of soldiers in World War II, widely regarded as her finest novel.
