61. Profile: Anne Rice
January Magazine interview from 1998
http://www.januarymagazine.com/rice.html
When you meet her, you wonder if a theatrical presence is something she was born with or something that came into the world with the popularity of Lestat. Whatever the case, she embodies theater, from the mane of silver-streaked hair that cascades over her shoulders, to the eloquent gestures she makes with her hands when she talks, to the seemingly inborn ability to scope and stroke a venue: modulating her southern-touched voice so that it ambles into the corners of even a well-packed room. Even the clothes she chooses speak of persona: they fit into our expectations of Anne Rice the author. The literary diva of darkness knows how to play a room. She knows how to fill a room, as well. She is at a press conference promoting her latest book, Pandora: New Tales of the Vampires . The book is the first of the vampire novellas we can expect once yearly from now until, presumably, she doesn't feel like doing them anymore. It's a press conference all right, and the press is here en masse. However, the press corps hasn't been told that tickets to the event have been sold and her fans have come in droves: filling the theater to capacity and after her oration forming a patient but seemingly-never-ending line from the dais where Rice signs, through the theater and out into the foyer.

Anne Rice: Vittorio, the Vampire

With Pandora, Anne Rice began a magnificent new series of vampire novels. Now, in the second of her New Tales of the Vampires, she tells the mesmerizing story of Vittorio, a vampire in the Italian Age of Gold.
Anne Rice: The Vampire Armand

In the latest installment of The Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice summons up dazzling worlds to bring us the story of Armand - eternally young, with the face of a Botticelli angel. Armand, who first appeared in all his dark glory more than twenty years ago in the now-classic Interview with the Vampire, the first of The Vampire Chronicles, the novel that established its author worldwide as a magnificent storyteller and creator of magical realms.
Anne Rice: Merrick

At the center is the beautiful, unconquerable witch, Merrick. She is a descendant of the gens de colors libres, a cast derived from the black mistresses of white men, a society of New Orleans octaroons and quadroons, steeped in the lore and ceremony of voodoo, who reign in the shadowy world where the African and the Frenchthe white and the darkintermingle. Her ancestors are the Great Mayfair Witches, of whom she knows nothingand from whom she inherits the power and magical knowledge of a Circe.

In The Vampire Armand , Anne Rice returns to her indomitable Vampire Chronicles and recaptures the gothic horror and delight she first explored in her classic tale Interview with the Vampire The story begins in the aftermath of Memnoch the Devil The Vampire Armand is richly intertextual; readers will relish the retelling of critical events from Lestat and Louis's narratives. Nevertheless, the novel is very much Armand's own tragic tale. Rice deftly integrates the necessary back-story for new readers to enter her epic series, and the introduction of a few new voices adds a fresh perspectiveand the promise of provocative future installments. Okay, on my daily sojourn to the Subreality endorsed message boards, I caught Kielle's new cause. I even stopped and read the links out of sheer curiosity. As I was reading the first link, which looked like an Anne Rice FAQ type dealio, a thought occurred to me... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! *snort* I'm sorry. Sorry. Please allow me to explain my sudden outburst of laughter*. First off, I don't read Anne Rice's works. Hell, I wouldn't know her from Eve. I vaguely recall a cover of one of her books and that she had a couple of comic books based off her work, but that's all I know. Secondly, this rant is *NOT* making fun of Kielle for linking, Anne Rice fans for writing, Anne Rice writers for protesting, or you for reading; this post is *MY* take on one certain "rule" (as it were) among the fanfic community. Thirdly, if any asks where I stand in this mess, bet you butt it's with the Anne Rice fanficcers. I'm a firm believer in the concept of fanfic, open source, and the general concept that no one can or should try to control ideas or writing at all. With those three points made to hopefully squelch any flamers trying to attack or goad me, I will now try to explain the humour I see in all of this.

Author's comments on the film, Interview with the Vampire.

FROM ANNE RICE: ON THE FILM, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
DEAR READERS AND VIEWERS,
As you may know, while the film IWTV was in production with David Geffen, the author of the book had no legitimate contact with him or with the studio or with anyone connected with the film. When the announcement was made that Tom Cruise would star as Lestat, I had deep reservations and severe criticisms. So did many many of my readers. I talked openly about this. A curtain thereafter divided me from the entire production, and with reason. Nobody likes to be criticized, and that includes movie people, too. I understand and accept what happened. But to me, movies and books are not like sports. There is no immediate consensus on whether a player had scored a home run or a touch down. So it was okay to speak my mind on the casting, and I don't have any regrets. But to continue...
I saw no rough cuts of IWTV; I saw no clips. I went to no screenings. It wasn't until David Geffen, himself took the unusual risk of sending me a VHS tape of the movie, that I saw it. And I approached this tape with a deep fear of being hurt, crushed, disappointed, destroyed by the finished work. When I saw the film on VHS, I came out at once in favor of it, declaring that I loved it. I bought two pages in VARIETY to talk about it in a frank and unedited announcement. No one controlled what I wrote, or had any opportunity to delete any part of it. I loved the film. I said so. I had no idea at the time that the film would be a huge success. I really hoped it would be, but I didn't know. It was so eccentric, so extreme, so weird. I came out in favor of it, fully prepared to sink with it if it failed, that is, to look stupid in my praise of it. I had no other moral and aesthetic choice. I went by the heart.

  • The Roquelaure Reader: A Companion to Anne Rice's Erotica Interview with the Vampire (Futura, Paperback, 1993, read: December 93, August 94, December 94) "In a darkened room a young man sits telling the macabre and eerie story of his life ... the story of a vampire, gifted with eternal life, cursed with an exquisite craving for human blood." Louis de Point du Lac, a 200-year-old vampire tells his story to a nameless interviewer: how he was made a vampire in 1791 in New Orleans The first part of the 'Vampire Chronicles' was first published 23 years ago (1976) and nobody would have thought that the chronicles would expand into 6 volumes (as of May 99). It was Anne Rice's first novel, not regarding some short stories she did before. She tells the story of the vampires Lestat, Louis and Claudia for once not from the perspective of the hunters and victims, as it was common until then, but from the vampires point of view. What it means to them to be immortal and to kill to survive. That way Anne Rice has given a new face to the vampire genre ... and what a face that is. After all, the first lesson of a vampiric existance is 'to be powerful, beautiful and without regret'.
