Rich, Adrienne
American poet and essayist, best known for her examination of the experiences of women in society. She won the National Book Award in 1974 for Diving into the Wreck, a collection of poems that explored such subjects as language, myth, and the historical development of women's roles in society.
Rich was born in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1951 she graduated from Radcliffe College and received the Yale Younger Poets award for her first collection of poems, A Change of World. Her other books include Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law (1963), The Dream of a Common Language (1978), Your Native Land, Your Life (1986), An Atlas of the Difficult World (1992), and Dark Fields of the Republic: Poems, 1991-1995 (1995).
During her career, Rich has been active in the women's movement, the promotion of civil rights, and antiwar activities. Much of her poetry reflects these concerns. She has encouraged people to question their beliefs, and in many of her poems Rich analyzes herself, reflecting on such subjects as her Jewish heritage, homosexuality, and the politics of oppression.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Rich's poetry is extremely accessible and readable. However, there are a few allusions that cannot be understood and, from time to time, there will be references to events or literary works that will not be immediately recognized by students. This material or these references are glossed in the text so the student can understand the historical or literary context. Other problems occur when there is fundamental hostility to the poet over feminism. The instructor will have to explain that feminism simply means a belief in the social, political, and economic equality of women and men. Explain, also, that Rich is not a man-hater or in any way unwilling to consider men as human beings. Rather, her priority is to establish the fundamental concerns of her women readers.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
It is important to read these poems out loud, to understand that Rich is simultaneously a political, polemical, and lyric poet. It is important also to establish for the poems of the '60s, the Vietnam War protests as background as well as the feminist movement of the '60s and '70s. It is also important to emphasize that in many respects the '60s and '70s were reaction to the confinement of the '50s and the feminine mystique of that period. In addition, stress that the political background of the poems by Adrienne Rich connects the personal and the political.

Adrienne Rich (1929- )
This "radical lesbian feminist" poet has been highly visible in the feminist and antiwar movements since the middle of the 1960s. Although often
criticized as too radical, she was awarded the National Book Award in 1974 for Diving into the Wreck, a collection of feminist poems. Her writings
explore her Jewish heritage, and lesbianisn. Rich's work promotes introspection and challenging deeply held beliefs.

Adrienne Rich (b. 1929). Born to a middle-class family, Rich was educated by her parents until she entered public school in the fourth grade. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Radcliffe College in 1951, the same year her first book of poems, A Change of World , appeared. That volume, chosen by W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, and her next, The Diamond Cutters and Other Poems (1955), earned her a reputation as an elegant, controlled stylist. In the 1960s, however, Rich began a dramatic shift away from her earlier mode as she took up political and feminist themes and stylistic experimentation in such works as Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law The Necessities of Life Leaflets (1969), and

Love Poem 2 - Adrienne Rich
I wake up in your bed. I know I have been dreaming.
Much earlier, the alarm broke us from each other,
you've been at your desk for hours. I know what I dreamed:
our friend the poet comes into my room
where I've been writing for days,
drafts, carbons, poems are scattered everywhere,
and I want to show her one poem
which is the poem of my life. But I hesitate,
and wake. You've kissed my hair
to wake me. I dreamed you were a poem, I say, a poem I wanted to show someone... and I laugh and fall dreaming again of the desire to show you to every one I love, to move openly together in the pull of gravity, which is not simple, which carries the feathered grass a long way down the upbreathing air. aqss, Mon, 03. Rich, Adrienne Cecile
(1929- ), poet, essayist, and activist Born on May 16, 1929, in Baltimore, Maryland, Adrienne Rich was encouraged to write from an early age. In 1951 she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Radcliffe College, and that same year her first book of poetry, A Change of World, was published, having been selected by the poet W. H. Auden for the Yale Younger Poets Award. Her early poetry is characterized by elegance and mastery of formal elements, qualities she perfected in The Diamond Cutters and Other Poems (1955). Her volume entitled Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law: Poems, 1954-1962 (1963) marks a movement away from the restrained and formal to a looser, more personal form. In 1966 she separated from her husband (who committed suicide in 1970). Her fourth collection, Necessities of Life: Poems, 1962-1965 (1966), is written almost entirely in free verse. Throughout the 1960s and '70s Rich's increasing commitment to the women's liberation movement and to the lesbian/feminist aesthetic politicized much of her work. Among her later volumes of verse are Diving into the Wreck: Poems, 1971-1972
