http://cspace.unb.ca/miramichi/chathamlibrary/richards.html
David Adams Richards What or how did you become an author? Well I read my first book when I was 14, never read very much until then, and it was when I was halfway through that book that I said, "this is what I'd like to do." Since I was 14 I knew what I wanted to be, and by the time I was 19 I never thought of being anything else but a writer. I wrote my first book when I was 21 and I had it published when I was 23. How many novels have you written to this time? Nine - nine novels, a hockey book and a book of short stories. What are your novels mainly about? About living in New Brunswick, the Maritimes and how the people deal with things in their lives. The problems they have, the happiness they have and the sorrows they have. How long have you been an author? Twenty-five years. What is the career of an author like? Is it a hard working job or easy? You have to be dedicated, you have to work every day. The best thing to do is write down something when you think of it. You are your own boss. No one tells you what to do so you have to discipline yourself. The best thing to do is to look upon it as just an ordinary job and to work every day. If you don't look upon it like that, you won't get your work done. So you have to discipline yourself. What is your favorite, or most successful novel, you have written?

DAVID ADAMS RICHARDS
David Adams Richards was born in Newcastle and studied literature at St. Thomas University in Fredericton. In 1971 he began to read from what was to become his first novel, The Coming of Winter, the first five chapters of which won the Norma Epstein Prize for Creative Writing in 1973. The book was translated into Russian in 1979 and became widely read in the Soviet Union. His second novel, Blood Ties (1976) and a collection of short stories, Dancers at Night(1978) made way for the acclaim which greeted Lives of Short Duration in 1981, which firmly established his reputation as a leading Canadian author. Richards was writer-in-residence at the University of New Brunswick from 1983 to 1987. In 1986, he was named as one of the ten best Canadian writers under the age of 45 by the Canadian Book Information Centre and was awarded a silver medal by the Royal Society of the Arts for his overall contribution to literature in Eastern Canada. St. Thomas University awarded him an honourary Doctor of Laws degree in 1990. Richards won the Canadian Authors Association Literary Award for Fiction in 1991 and was awarded the Canada-Australia Prize in 1992 for his important contribution to the world of literarture. Nights Below Station Street won the Governor-General's Literary Award for Fiction in 1985. The first novel of a trilogy, it was succeeded by Evening Snow Will Bring Such Peace in 1990 and For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down in 1993. His book of non-fiction A Lad From Brantford, and Other Essays, appeared in 1994, followed by two more novels, Hope in The Desperate Hour (1996), and The Bay of Love and Sorrows (1998).

David Adams Richards fonds
The David Adams Richards fonds , 1968-1996, currently comprises 32 cases (2.7 m), primarily of textual material, photographs, and 59 floppy disks, which have been copied to a CD-ROM for more stable and permanent preservation. David Adams Richards was born on October 17, 1950 in Newcastle, New Brunswick, the third of six children. Richards remembers that his inspiration for becoming a writer came at age 14 when he read Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist . Among the other literary influences for his writing are Faulkner, Buckler, Pushkin, Alden Nowlan, and Dostoevsky. In 1969, following graduation from Harkins High School, Richards studied literature for three years at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick. During this time, an informal writers workshop which met Tuesday evenings in the McCord Hall Ice House (the Ice House Gang) provided Richards with a critical forum for his writing and encouragement from established writers such as Fred Cogswell, Kent Thompson, Alden Nowlan, Bill and Nancy Bauer, and Robert Gibbs. Apart from a privately printed book of poetry and short stories entitled One Step Inside (1972), Richards' first publication was

http://www.januarymagazine.com/profiles/darichards.html
Buy it online "The individual characters themselves decide. I mean, once the book gets started, the characters kind of take over. But it's an ongoing study of, well, of the human condition. But it's also a study of how to counteract violence against physical, emotional, economic and how people group among each other in certain senses to achieve power. And how that power can be so core, not only to themselves, but to other people." The day before I met with him, David Adams Richards' most recent book, Mercy Among the Children , had been nominated for the Giller Prize, one of Canada's most coveted literary awards. While clearly pleased and possibly chuffed by this turn of events, Richards is coy about the nomination. "We'll see what happens." Since then, the book has also been nominated for a Governor General's Award for fiction and has been reviewed to choruses of gushing from the generally reserved literati. At 50, Richards is one of Canada's most celebrated little known authors. Perhaps lacking the sex appeal that has followed the careers of some of his peers

Allan Robichaud has written about the most important hero in his life - his brother, Adam. Read his story and you'll understand why Adam has made such a special impression upon him.
Allan's story about his brother, Adam, inspired us to create this site on New Brunswick Heroes. Adam remained an inspiration to all who knew him until his passing from this life to the next on June 23, 1997. We dedicate this site to him. He truly was a hero, courageously battling the medical problems that continually confronted him with a sense of optimism that motivated those who knew him to do what Adam knew we all should do - give of yourself to others, even when it hurts, and live life to the fullest, even if it isn't meant to be as long as you would like to be. Thank-you, Allan, for writing such a wonderful story about your brother. Thank-you, Adam! You continue to be our hero! - The District 16 Cooperative Networking Team
