Imagine a flimsy dinghy tossed upon a stygian river of rough love, cheap sex, and violent death in some New-Brunswick back-of-beyond and you begin to appreciate the cruel and carnal currents David Adams Richards navigates in The Bay of Love and Sorrows
It’s the latest instalment in the critically lauded Maritimer’s grit-and-gristle series that includes, among its brighter offerings, Blood Ties Lives of Short Duration Hope in the Desperate Hour , and 1988’s Governor-General’s Award-winning Nights Below Station Street
The Bay of Love and Sorrows
revisits the shacks and homes scattered along the all-important road which, according to the omniscient yet mumpish narrator, ”had become a very different place in just four months... The road, with the river that ran beyond it... had suddenly become less idyllic.”
Because she feels it ”proper for proper girls to wait,” Karrie Smith, the only daughter of Dora and Emmett who own ”the gas bar just above Oyster River,” pursues Tom Donnerel until he catches her. When the winsome hopeful returns from community college to begin her life on Tom’s farm, she attempts to rebuild the friendship between her fiancé and Judge Skid’s son, Michael. Inevitably, a situation develops. Inevitably, it involves a metaphoric parade of grotesque characters led down a crooked, capricious, and occasionally overgrown path by Everette Hutch with the sister-brother duo of the radiantly beautiful Madonna and clinically depressed Silver Brassaurd firmly in grip and tragically in tow.

Review Summary "Mercy Among The Children, a book by David Richard Adams allows you to witness the trial and tribulations of three generations of the Henderson family. The book revolves around how Sydney Henderson lives and dies by his ideals because no matter the consequences he will stand firmly by them. As a child Sydney Henderson's life was changed dramatically when he pushed another child, Connie Devlin, of a church roof for stealing his molasses sandwich. He made a deal with God that if he let this child live he would never in any way hurt another person again. "

David Adams Richards "David Adams Richards is one of the exceptional writers of our time."
— Alistair Macleod "David Adams Richards is perhaps the greatest Canadian writer alive…"
The Vancouver Sun "Richards is a painfully sharp observer, who possesses one of the most distinct and compelling voices in contemporary literature."
The Toronto Star River of the Brokenhearted “My father Miles King once told me that some are damned by blood, by treason, by chance or circumstance, some even by the stars themselves or, as Shakespeare denying that said, by ourselves. This in a way is a journey back in time to see how I was damned.” From David Adams Richards, winner of The Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Award, comes a story of one woman’s resolute and determined struggle in overcoming small town prejudice and deceit. Janie McCleary and her husband George King run one of the first movie theatres in the Maritimes. Their marriage is deemed scandalous he is Church of England, she is Irish Catholic but it is not until George dies in the 1920s that the town, led by unscrupulous Joey Elias, turns against Janie. A woman in a world of men, she soon finds herself nearly hounded out of business. But not only does she survive, she prospers. Within a year she is wealthy, but ostracized. More and more reclusive, a victim of double-dealing and overt violence, she trusts no one outside her family. Loyalty, even unto ruin, becomes the code of Janie’s small family.

A matzoh of life and death
THE BURIAL SOCIETY
Starring Rob LaBelle, Jan Rubes. Written and directed by Nicholas Racz. (AA) 91 min. Opens Jan 31. This nifty little thriller opens with the arresting image of a nebbishy accountant being dangled over the side of a bridge. Though this is perhaps not the best time for our unlikely hero to reflect on a Biblical quotation, Sheldon (Rob LaBelle) is nevertheless reminded of Isaiah 9:2: "He who dwells in the shadow of death, upon him the light will shine." As Sheldon notes in his voiceover narration, his situation makes the line seem like "a fucking understatement." The shadow of death is where The Burial Society takes place. The title refers to the Chevrah Kadisha, the men who conduct the rites of purification for the deceased in Jewish burial ceremonies. Shortly after the incident on the bridge, Sheldon arrives in a small town and ingratiates himself with the crusty trio who maintain this dying tradition there. Marvin (Jan Rubes) is especially suspicious until this "macher" tells them of his recent troubles with figures in the Jewish underworld. Though Sheldon seems sincere in his desire to start a new, more devout life, he's not being entirely truthful about what he knows about a freshly laundered and now missing pile of money. With all its bloated corpses, double-crosses and esoteric Judaica
