ENTERTAINMENT
By Chris Willson-Smith

The Brunswickan Printer Friendly Version UNB/STU Creative Arts will be presenting an evening of electrifying music and passionate readings on Wednesday, September 19, at the Wilmot United Church. The first concert of the season will showcase the readings of multi-award winning author David Adams Richards, as well as music from the world-renowned classical group The Gryphon Trio.
Richards, who was three credits shy of a degree from St. Thomas University, wrote his first novel, The Coming of Winter, at the age of twenty-two. He enjoyed immediate critical acclaim for the work, winning the Norma Epstein prize, establishing himself as one of Canada's most promising young authors.
Richards, who hails from Newcastle, has become synonymous with his birthplace. Described as sensitive and compassionate to human emotion, his first eight novels- as well as his most recent, Mercy Among Children- take place in the Miramichi area. Through capturing the essence of human needs, Richards has enjoyed much success throughout his career, twice winning the Governor General's Award for fiction.
The Gryphon Trio is an internationally recognized classical group that has enjoyed acclaim and success wherever it plays. Mixing a high-energy performance with traditional musical selections such as Canadian Gary Kulesha's "Trio for Violin, Cello And Piano," Gryphon has achieved a fame equal to that of the mythological half- eagle, half-lion creature.

(A Phyllis Bruce Book/HarperCollins) A witty and brilliant collection of stories. The author's delicate, playful approach to faith or the lack of it in our lives is the work of a major literary talent at the top of her craft. A virtuoso performance. The elegant and scintillating writing in this collection is enriched by the selection of wood engravings and line drawings from earlier centuries. A book that can be read and reread many times for pleasure and stimulation. POETRY Stephanie Bolster

    White Stone: The Alice Poems
    White Stone: The Alice Poems
was judged the best book of poetry in 1998 for as many reasons as there are poems in this powerful sequence, but due primarily to Stephanie Bolster's ability to depict the emotional life of Alice Liddell as girl and woman in brilliant narrative juxtapositions. She uses her lyrical powers to present Alice the creation and Alice the person in a cultural context that, on one level, re-examines cognition and dissociation and on another liberates the poetic sequence from the monotony of story and closure.

    FFWD Weekly
    Books
by Trevor Klassen David Adams Richards It is not often that a book of true greatness graces our eyes. Give thanks, then, that David Adams Richards has reappeared with a work in tow that is worthy of his previous efforts. Richards is one of only three authors to win the Governor General's Award for both non-fiction ( Lines on the Water , 1998) and fiction ( Evening Snow Will Bring Such Peace , 1990). He has over 20 major works to his credit, many of them prizewinners and all of them respected. Here then is another miracle: Mercy Among the Children, The Brothers Karamazov or Myshkin from The Idiot The book's plot is ambitious. When Sydney is 12, he pushes his neighbour Connie Devlin from the church roof. Thinking he has killed him, Sydney prays to God to spare Connie's life, and in exchange he vows to never harm another human being. The moment this pact is made, Connie arises, wipes his bloody nose, laughs and leaves. Sydney abides by his pact. The moment, then, becomes the beginning of an odyssey, and Sydney's family is soon persecuted by those who would exploit his extreme pacifism. "Tolstoy and Dostoevsky are my two major novelists," says Richards. "And I suppose Sydney's struggle is Old Testament, and maybe like the Book of Job, in that the travail of humanity matters in a universal way, and speaks to the capacity for universal joy."

[You will need to have Microsoft Word installed to view the DOC files.] CBA Libris Awards, nominated and voted on by members of the Canadian bookselling community, honour outstanding achievement in Canada’s bookselling industry. There is no monetary prize awarded; a "trophy" engraved with the winner's category and year is presented. The awards can be prominently displayed in the winners’ store/office. Recognition of the awards is very prevalent within the industry and winning one of CBA's Libris Awards is considered to be a great achievement. CBA's Libris Awards 2002 were a scaled down affair—in terms of formality, but certainly not in terms of enthusiasm or of attendance. Hundreds turned out to catch up with colleagues during a reception on the BookExpo Canada trade show floor and to watch this year's recipients accept their awards from the BookTelevision stage.

Booker Prize nominee Jane Urquhart, award-winning author David Adams Richards among literary luminaries at York U. Canlit series TORONTO, September 7, 2001 York University students and the public will be treated to readings and musings by 12 Canadian writers, including Booker Prize nominee Jane Urquhart and award-winning author David Adams Richards, during York's Canadian Writers in Person series, which runs from September 2001 through March 2002. Part of York Professor John Unrau's innovative first-year English course, the series will introduce students and avid readers to some of the best contemporary Canadian fiction and poetry, and give them a unique opportunity to quiz the authors who pen the very works they are studying. "Hearing some of Canada's finest authors read from their work adds a dimension to the literary experience that is unavailable from the printed word alone," says Unrau. Now in its third year, the series is sponsored by the Master's office and student association of York's Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies, with the support of the Canada Council, and a dozen other benefactors. The following public readings will be held Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. in Stedman Lecture Hall "D" at York University
