MORDECAI RICHLER
Place of birth : Montreal, Quebec
Place of residence : Montreal, Quebec A prominent author, scriptwriter, and essayist, Mordecai Richler was persuaded by his children, Daniel, Emma, Noah, Martha, and Jacob, to write something for them. The result was Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang . Started as a bedtime tale for his youngest son, it went on to win two major children's book prizes in 1976. It has been translated into French, Finnish, German and Dutch, recorded, filmed, read on the radio, and adapted as a musical. Jacob Two-Two's adventures continue in two other stories, the most recent, Jacob Two-Two's First Spy Case , winning one of the prestigious 1995 Mr. Christie's Book Awards. Mordecai Richler grew up in Montreal, attended Sir George Williams University, and then lived and wrote in England for many years. Homesick for "blizzards, hockey, smoked-meat sandwiches" and "the mountain lakes of his boyhood", he returned to Canada in 1972, dividing his time between Montreal and Quebec's Eastern Townships.

Reflecting his youth in Montreal, Richler's novels are often set within the Canadian Jewish community. Typically, he combines fantastic and wildly comic elements with a realistic theme. The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1959, film 1974), his best-known work, chronicles the ascent to wealth of a poor and fiercely ambitious Jewish youth. His other works include The Acrobats Cocksure St. Urbain's Horseman Joshua Then and Now Solomon Gursky Was Here (1989), and Barney's Version (1997). Richler has also written numerous screenplays, including No Love for Johnnie (1959) and movie versions of his own works. A number of his essays were collected in Notes on an Endangered Species This Year in Jerusalem (1994) discusses his personal reactions and relationship to Israel. Richler, Mordecai Barney's Version
Genre Novel (407 pp.) Keywords Aging Dementia Disability Family Relationships ... Trauma Summary Barney Panofskylike so many of Richler's protagonists (and like Richler himself, one suspects)is a hard-drinking, hard-smoking, foul-mouthed, hedonistic writer and producer. He has many sexual exploits in his past and loads of self doubt in his present, together with digitalis and dentures. But there was only one true love in his life, although he has had three wives: Clara a mysterious artist-poetess whose suicide in Paris helped to establish his fame; "the second Mrs. Panofsky" whom he loathed for all of their short time together; and Miriam, mother of his three children and his partner for decades, until Barney blows it with presumptuous inattention culminating in a vain indiscretion, and she leaves. Since the end of his second marriage, Barney has lived under the shadow of the unproven accusation of having murdered his best friend, Bernard "Boogie" Moscovitch. Supposedly, he committed the crime in a drunken rage provoked by his discovery of Boogie in flagrante with "the second Mrs Panofsky." Barney may have been drunk, but he didn't do it. At least, he doesn't remember doing it.
