U9's REPORTS Brixington ‘Lns’ 4-0 Ottery St Mary Tinsley; Sharkey; Gould; Jones; Playing down the slope in the first half the Lions couldn't seem to get the flowing football going against a very big Ottery side that were proving difficult to break down but who didn't really threaten themselves. The defence of James Flockhart and Jack Drinkall were coping well with a tricky forward the Otters had. The half ended with Brixington feeling that they hadn't taken advantage of the conditions going in at 0-0. The second half was all Brixington playing quick flowing football and it was no surprise when Morgan Tinsley hit a volley on the turn to give the Lions the lead. James Sharkey soon netted a second as he stroked in a shot from the edge of the box. Ottery were being kept in their own half as the Lions confidence grew and when Danny Gould made it 3-0 the win was secure but the best goal was saved for the end as a 20 yard dipping volley from Josh Jones flew into the net a goal he richly deserved for his all round performance. For high school students, this truth is that one can't depend upon being able to get out of school early on Fridays for pep rallies after football season ends. For college students, it's the realization that many of the assignations made during the early days of the semester were ill-advised at best, and that they'll have to continue sleeping with that teaching assistant if they expect to pass the semester. For those in the working world, it's that most magical time of the year, Layoff Season. Not many can explain why so many large companies decide to cleanse their payrolls of the rank and file so close to the holidays, but the surmisals are legion. The obvious answer is that for most companies, the fiscal year starts on October 1, but the logic behind that date being chosen to start a company's financial calendar is chicken-and-the-egg reasoning. Others point out, with plenty of evidence, that stock prices jump whenever a company lays off thousands of employees, in the same way the value of a book jumps when its author commits suicide. Still others suggest that American business is so constructed that a manager cannot beat his/her children at Christmas and threaten to return their presents, but abusing the employees is perfectly acceptable.

OC BOOKS' review pages 2000 Deep Stuff by Mike Riddell Reviewed by Paul Freedman Deep Stuff starts out like one of the old morality plays. The central character, John, moves into a new flat with Tasha, Siobhan, Quentin, and Claire. Almost immediately, to their own surprise, they are vigorously discussing moral issues - God, prayer, justice, work, housing. John somehow seems to trigger off this in-built urge to debate and the five find themselves setting aside their Friday evenings for a special meal and a topic to knock about. John, our central character, has a secret in his background. I can't say what - it's spoil the story for you. However, it really does make a huge difference to us when we finally realise where John is coming from and why the discussions - and where they've led - have grown so important to the group. Mike Riddell is the author of Godzone and Alt.spirit@metro.m3 (Alternative Spirituality for the Third Millennium) so we know - or we ought to know- that sooner or later all this moral munching is going to come to a focus. He writes with verve and pace. The characterisations are crisp and credible. The story moves right along and we do too. After all, we all know that writers get to sit around and write instead of working real jobs, and that this easy life of sitting down and typing (which any of us could do, if we just wrench the time away from zoning in front of the television watching Seinfeld reruns) allows them to trade paper with big words on it for checks with lots of zeros to the left of the decimal point. Writing is the biggest get-rich-quick scheme this side of starting a dotcom IPO, isn't it? Naturally, those who actually write know better.
