Paul Riddell Revisited: Placing "SFWA Member" on Your Cover Letter
Will It Help Sell Your Story?
(Top SF Editors Reveal Their Views About This Misunderstood Belief)
by James Van Pelt
Why should I care that Paul Riddell said in his Fall Tangent column, "I'm willing to bet that other editors feel the same way I do: with very few exceptions, seeing the letterhead that lists SFWA and HWA is a screaming neon sign saying 'crappy story enclosed; please flush at first opportunity'"? After all, as several editors and writers I talked to pointed out, the statement is clearly hyperbole and shouldn't be taken at face value. Riddell went on to say, "My main beef concerns the SFWA members who put their membership on the letterhead, as in 'Joe Blow, SFWA Member.' When I started accepting manuscripts for the Genetech anthology a year ago, I quickly learned to look at the cover letter; with maybe one exception, every submission that made a big gardyloo about SFWA on its masthead was a complete and utter dog." He says that he plans on addressing in more detail in a future column in Tangent his feelings about SFWA.

Ne'er Day
Watched TV mostly, once I'd got up.
2 January
An edlug meeting in the evening proved a jolly do.
3 January
Took the train down to London and let myself into Adam Boardman's flat which is quite nice and looks expesive. Once I'd gone through all the TV channels I made liberal use of the bandwidth and was glad that I did have an account on the machine.
4 January
Paul failed to show up but I did find other u19s website quakers such as Alex and Daf and older people like Sue. Some gurls as well turned up. We discssed website things, best idea was Alex's one to do a slashdot and have discussion with the articles. Damn good. Paul turned up in the evening, and there was a meal.
5 January
More quaker website stuff and a bit of wandering around London which was closed for the weekend. Adam kindly took us in for the evening. I discovered how to subscribe to uknot, the (alternative) mailing list for ISPs and general geek chat. Seems you have to send an e-mail to majordomo@uk.com with subscribe uknot in the first and only line of the body.

ARCHON 24 Science Fiction/Fantasy Web Page Contest
This contest is now in its fourth year; previous winners have been:
Jim Garrison: The Kremlin Rick Stevens: Welcome To The Morrow Project Joe Weir: The B5aholic's Babylon 5 Addiction Pages The basic idea is to judge science fiction/fantasy-related personal web pages. Almost anything goes (remember that children will be looking at your pages, too), as long as the primary content is related in some way to science fiction and/or fantasy. Judging will be subjective and based on any criteria each voter wants to use - best use of graphics, coolest page, best SF/fantasy content, or whatever. There will be a prize for the page judged "best" by the web audience. Anyone (including entrants) may vote, may vote for more than one entry on each ballot, and may vote more than once; only the last ballot received from each voter will be counted, however. Previous voters will be notified by email when new pages are added to the list of contestants. Voters will also be eligible for a prize; each voters name will be entered in a random drawing (voters do NOT have to be convention members). There are only a few rules:
  • The primary content must be SF and/or fantasy related.

Tinsley; Sharkey; Gould; Jones; Playing down the slope in the first half the Lions couldn't seem to get the flowing football going against a very big Ottery side that were proving difficult to break down but who didn't really threaten themselves. The defence of James Flockhart and Jack Drinkall were coping well with a tricky forward the Otters had. The half ended with Brixington feeling that they hadn't taken
advantage of the conditions going in at 0-0. The second half was all Brixington playing quick flowing football and it was no surprise when Morgan Tinsley hit a volley on the turn to give the Lions the lead. James Sharkey soon netted a second as he stroked in a shot from the edge of the box. Ottery were being kept in their own half as the Lions confidence grew and when Danny Gould made it 3-0 the win was secure but the best goal was saved for the end as a 20 yard dipping volley from Josh Jones flew into the net a goal he richly deserved for his all round performance. Brixington ‘Tgs’ 6-0 Ottery St. Mary

From the to Sunflower Alley 3 Honey Bee Battle of Fussa The crash of a breaking bottle; then a crashing thud behind us. “What the hell’s going on?” Paul hollers. “I don’t know man!” I think somebody’s over there, it looks...” Winston says, not finishing his sentence, pointing to a group of five young Japanese men silhouetted against the lights of the street, about thirty yards away. Agitated male Japanese voices are discernible. “Huck you GI!” a voice rings out from the direction of the Japanese men. “Huck you mah-dah GI!” another voice in the group yells. “That’s funny,” Paul says. “Your sister sucks my dick!” he shouts at the Japanese. “Fucken gooks want a fight!” booms a voice from a nearby group of five or six GIs. One of the GIs in the group picks up a stone and throws it at the Japanese. “They wanna fight World War Two all over again?” he shouts. He picks up another stone and takes a step toward the Japanese. “Well, come on, mother fuckers! We’ll fight it again!” He hurls the stone and then stoops to pick up another. The other guys in the group pick up stones, too. Shouts and flying stones fill the night air. “Huck you GI!”

Combat Manual Lesson Eleven It's Layoff Season The Rats Have Left the Ship By Paul T. Riddell With the end of October comes a collision with truth for many people. For high school students, this truth is that one can't depend upon being able to get out of school early on Fridays for pep rallies after football season ends. For college students, it's the realization that many of the assignations made during the early days of the semester were ill-advised at best, and that they'll have to continue sleeping with that teaching assistant if they expect to pass the semester. For those in the working world, it's that most magical time of the year, Layoff Season. Not many can explain why so many large companies decide to cleanse their payrolls of the rank and file so close to the holidays, but the surmisals are legion. The obvious answer is that for most companies, the fiscal year starts on October 1, but the logic behind that date being chosen to start a company's financial calendar is chicken-and-the-egg reasoning. Others point out, with plenty of evidence, that stock prices jump whenever a company lays off thousands of employees, in the same way the value of a book jumps when its author commits suicide. Still others suggest that American business is so constructed that a manager cannot beat his/her children at Christmas and threaten to return their presents, but abusing the employees is perfectly acceptable.

by Mike Riddell
Reviewed by Paul Freedman Deep Stuff starts out like one of the old morality plays. The central character, John, moves into a new flat with Tasha, Siobhan, Quentin, and Claire. Almost immediately, to their own surprise, they are vigorously discussing moral issues - God, prayer, justice, work, housing. John somehow seems to trigger off this in-built urge to debate and the five find themselves setting aside their Friday evenings for a special meal and a topic to knock about. John, our central character, has a secret in his background. I can't say what - it's spoil the story for you. However, it really does make a huge difference to us when we finally realise where John is coming from and why the discussions - and where they've led - have grown so important to the group. Mike Riddell is the author of Godzone and Alt.spirit@metro.m3 (Alternative Spirituality for the Third Millennium) so we know - or we ought to know- that sooner or later all this moral munching is going to come to a focus. He writes with verve and pace. The characterisations are crisp and credible. The story moves right along and we do too. In the margins, as the young people chew over moral issues (in between bouts of adultery), are notable quotes from luminaries of the ages amplifying the subjects the flat dwellers are discussing.

e-mail this article Letters on Chameleon Skin A disturbing number of people who have never written assume that the writer's life is nothing but tribulations. After all, we all know that writers get to sit around and write instead of working real jobs, and that this easy life of sitting down and typing (which any of us could do, if we just wrench the time away from zoning in front of the television watching Seinfeld reruns) allows them to trade paper with big words on it for checks with lots of zeros to the left of the decimal point. Writing is the biggest get-rich-quick scheme this side of starting a dotcom IPO, isn't it? Naturally, those who actually write know better. Most have to balance writing for the ages with writing to pay a few bills around the house, and most of the time that they should spend producing is instead spent arguing with egocentric editors, chasing deadbeat publishers for payment for published articles or books, and putting off passersby who go "So yer a writer-person, huh? Waal, Ah've got a story for ya: if you write it, Ah'll split the money with ya." For those who actually achieve some tiny measure of fame, the time spent away from writing is compounded with college students who ask them to write their theses for them, general moochers who think that they're somehow owed something for reading the author's work, and fans who think nothing of stopping by an author's house and wanting to chew the fat for a few days. It's no coincidence that many successful writers sequester themselves away from their adoring public: any disruption or diversion takes them away from
