Mary Roberts Rinehart - (1876-1958) Allegheny By James Cooper I. Biography Mary Roberts Rinehart was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh) on August 12, 1876, and she died September 22, 1958. She was born left-handed, in the days when this was looked upon as irrational and unladylike. To make her use her right hand, she had her left hand tied behind her back. During her lifetime, she was a very successful mystery writer and playwright. Rinehart lived in Allegheny for most of her life, and wrote most of her mystery stories in Allegheny. Rinehart got her first start in writing when she was in high school. She sold a couple of stories to a local newspaper for a dollar a piece, and had them published in the newspaper. The Circular Staircase , took place in Pittsburgh and for the first time showed how mystery and comedy could flow together. Her mystery stories were so good and well liked that she was compared to one of the most recognized mystery writers ever, Agatha Christie. Her mystery stories were not only compared to those of Agatha Christie, in her prime her writings were rated over Christie. Rinehart's stories had a tendency to be very well-liked. It was because of this reason that Rinehart had one of her stories turned into a play. The story was originally called

By Mary Roberts Rinehart, 1876 -1958 The text was graciously proofed and prepared for the MacGuffin by Lois Ward of Prospect, Ohio The Circular Staircase was first published as a serial in All-Story Magazine from November 1907-March 1908. Rinehart revised it for publication in book form by Bobbs-Merrill in 1908, her first book pubication. It was adapted and released in 1915 as a silent film by Selig (VLSE), directed by Edward J. LeSaint, starring Eugenie Besserer, Stella Razeto, Guy Oliver, Edith Johnson, William Howard, and Anna Dodge. In her autobiography, Rinehart said of The Circular Staircase: "And strange to relate The Circular Staircase was intended to be a semi-satire on the usual pompous self-important crime story. When later on as a book it was taken seriously and the reviews began to come in, I was almost overwhelmed... The Circular Staircase... had made a huge success. The notices were excellent, laying great stress on the relief of humor in a crime story, and so I kept to myself the deadly secret that the book had been written as a semi-satire. ... But also to my astonishment I read that I had developed a new technique of the crime novel; that I had made the first advance in the technique of the crime story since Edgar Allan Poe! I was stunned."

Home Reader THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE, continued Mary Roberts Rinehart, 1876 -1958 . . . And again I thought of Gertrude's sprained ankle. Was it the right or the left? Chapter 8 THE OTHER HALF OF THE LINE "Miss Innes," the detective began, "what is your opinion of the figure you saw on the east veranda the night you and your maid were in the house alone?" "It was a woman," I said positively. "And yet your maid affirms with equal positiveness that it was a man." "Nonsense," I broke in. "Liddy had her eyes shut she always shuts them when she's frightened." "And you never thought then that the intruder who came later that night might be a woman the woman, in fact, whom you saw on the veranda?" "I had reasons for thinking it was a man," I said, remembering the pearl cuff-link. "Now we are getting down to business. What were your reasons for thinking that?" I hesitated. "If you have any reason for believing that your midnight guest was Mr. Armstrong, other than his visit here the next night, you ought to tell me, Miss Innes. We can take nothing for granted. If, for instance, the intruder who dropped the bar and scratched the staircase you see, I know about that if this visitor was a woman, why should not the same woman have come back the following night, met Mr. Armstrong on the circular staircase, and in alarm shot him?" "It was a man," I reiterated. And then, because I could think of no other reason for my statement, I told him about the pearl cuff-link. He was intensely interested.
