Home Page Dictionaries History A' Level ... Newspapers Literature Learn Greek Modern Greek Novels and Poetry Compiled by and Stelios Jackson Stelios' novel of 2001 "Uncle Petros and the Goldbach Conjecture", by Apostolos Doxiades The Entries all in Greek are original works in Greek. Where the Author is in English and the title in Greek, these are translations into Greek and where the author and title are in English, so is the book ( where it has been translated from Greek I have placed a "G" beside the title ). Books in both Greek and English say so after the title ("parallel text") Listed below in both Greek and English are some of the 2,000 novels and poetic works that we currently stock. Our titles are constantly changing and of course we can get anything available in Greece, normally within a fortnight, so this page will always be a mere tiny percentage of the books we stock. There will eventually be around 1,000 novels and poems on this page. I have used both Greek and English characters in the list below, which brings with it a few problems. I am using the Roman alphabet i.e. A-Z and not the Greek, A-W : As the Greek and Roman alphabets share certain similarities most letters will appear where you'd expect. Below I have shown the system I have used to enable the reader to be able to find a Greek author using the Roman Alphabet:

ACTAEON (Yannis Ritsos) Artemis’s revenge was harsh, Actaeon (since it was pure accident that you saw her washing herself naked in the Virgin’s spring): transforming you into a stag so that your own dogs would tear you to pieces, goaded on by her anger, not knowing what they did. Now, when night comes on, we hear their howls, their terrible baying at the shadows of leaves, at the crescent moon – how are you supposed to get any sleep? We climb out of bed, light the lamps, try to paint your beauty on the wall full-length as Chiron did back then in his cave. If we succeed, the night turns sweet: your dogs gaze at your image, sniff the air, and suddenly all fifty of them quiet down together. But the next night we have to start from scratch, because during the day, maybe because of the sunlight and the voices in the marketplace, it fades, and by dusk your golden and rose image has disappeared. And listen to them again, your dogs, all around the closed house. ARTEMIS (Yannis Ritsos) The goddess looks infinitely sad, despite all her glory – sad and often peevish, the Beautiful One – what more could she want?

NOT EVEN MYTHOLOGY (Yannis Ritsos) The day ends that way, with brilliant colors, so lovely, without anything at all happening for us. The guards forgetten in the guardhouses. A boat floats in the shallows, the light golden and rose, foreign; the nets in the slime gather black fish, fat and oily, reflecting the glimmer of twilight. And later, when the lamps were lit, we went inside and again returned to Mythology, searching for some deeper correlation, some distant, general allegory to soothe the narrowness of the personal void. We found nothing. The pomegranate seeds and Persephone seemed cheap to us in view of the night approaching heavily and the total absence.

Jena Woodhouse
Below red cliffs silk-starred with native
cyclamen in early spring, the city's entrance
narrows to a needle's eye, a vaulted alley.
By the west rampart the house with fading
burnt siena walls, rust in the balcony's
wrought iron, poet and siblings gone. A bronze
bust in the courtyard gazing sightlessly
towards the sea, in life his muse gave tongues to sky stone water and mortality. The Byzantine citadel that crowned the rock's rough sanguine dome harboured bishops corsairs widows courtesans and poetry. The poet Ritsos heard their distant footfalls in the cobbled lanes strange voices in deserted rooms the walls' and bastions' muffled groans, listened to the skeins of sound spun out of time's conspiracies, the rasp as bluff met thorn and husk, the wind in its laboratory, the reminiscing of a time-warped city. He sought his bitter truths amid intransigent austerity: light and the frugal water, stone entered the marrow of his bones. Banished to

POETRY
Yannis Ritsos
Yannis Ritsos was a distinguished modern Greek poet. He was born in Monemvasia, Greece in 1909. His first collection was published in 1934. He was sent to exile in 1948 - 52 because he was a member of the EAM (National Liberation Form) against the Germans. He wrote many poems. The “Moonlight Sonata” won the National prize of poetry. In 1967 he was arrested by the Papadopoulos dictatorship and sent to prison camp in Yiaros. His poetry was banned in Greece. He has been honoured by many Universities around the world. His work includes more than one hundred volumes of poems, essays and dramatic works. He died in his sleep at home in 1990. The following are some of the ‘simple things’ as Ritsos used to call his short poems. The poems were translated by the distinguished translator Edmund Keely and are found in his book “ Yannis Ritsos Repetitions Testimonies Parentheses ”
