AB/A105 Introduction to Modern Greek Poetry
Teacher Professor Roderick Beaton Course-unit value Prerequisites : None Course outline : The course introduces the major poets and movements in Greek poetry from about 1820 to the 1970s, with special emphasis on: the influential figure of Dionysios Solomos (1798-1857) and on the theme of facing up to the ancient past in the work of five major poets of the twentieth century. Half way through the course, there is a session on the formal aspects of verse in Greek, and their development throughout the period. Texts may be read in either the original Greek or translation. Course content : The course will highlight the main lines of literary development from the oral tradition of pre-1880 and the rise of a national poetry in the 1820s, through the diverse reactions to Romanticism at the turn of the 20th century by Palamas and Cavafy, to the high Modernists of the "1930s generation", Seferis and Elytis and the varied responses of postwar poets to the impact of the Greek civil war (1944-49). Attention will be paid throughout to the close interrelation of literature and history in the Greek tradition, and poems and extracts will be chosen to illustrate recurring and developing themes characteristic of that tradition. Approximately two thirds of the course will be devoted to close reading and discussion of texts (with translation). Four sessions in the second semester will be devoted to metrical and formal analysis.

    When the Stranger Comes
    by Yannis Ritsos
Written in 1958, When the Stranger Comes is considered one of the most accomplished works of the Greek poet Yannis Ritsos. A committed communist, Ritsos spent five years in a concentration camp during Greece's bitter civil war. In 1967 he was sent into internal exile by the junta. When the Stranger Comes was produced during a period of relative calm for Ritsos, when he was able to bring the full extent of his sensuous, humanistic sensibility to bear. The poem is a set in house of mourning, which a mysterious but redemptive figure transforms. This epic poem is read by the renowned poet and writer Antigone Kefala from the translation by Peter Green and Beverly Bardsley. The music is provided by members of The Habibis. Reader Antigone Kefala Sound engineers Colin Preston and Russell Stapleton Producer/director Matthew Leonard Yannis Ritsos was born into a patrician family which lost much of its wealth in the Greek land reforms of the early century.

Behçet Necatigil’in "100 Soruda Mitologya"sý bu kitaplarýn baþýnda geliyordu. Ýlk basýmý 1969’da Gerçek Yayýnevi tarafýndan yapýlan kitabý, bu ay K Kitaplýðý yeni okurlara sundu. Her ulusun mitologyasý vardýr.

The cessation of Antaeus and the dissolution of Ecco Press was one of the great literary crimes of the twentieth century. Ecco was devoted to keeping the world's best poetry and fiction at the forefront of the American consciousness, and was one of the few non-University-affiliated presses who were able to do it for an extended period of time. W. W. Norton has taken over the Ecco catalog and attempted to keep the flame alive. Whether it has succeeded is for others to judge. Yannis Ritsos is a great example of the Ecco imperative. Not as well known in America as other Greek poets, and yet as prolific as any two of them, Ritsos became a part of Greece's national consciousness during the sixties and seventies. He managed to take the current events of the time (which affected him personally; he was arrested a number of times, held in camps, exiled temporarily, etc.) and mesh them almost seamlessly with traditional Greek myth in a series of "Repetitions," the title of many books released during that period. Despite, or perhaps because of, the overtly political nature of his work, Ritsos never gained the status internationally of contemporaries such as Nobel winner Odysseus Elytis or oft-quoted-by-Stephen-King George Seferis. One of the beauties of translation is that much of the baggage that goes with it is lost with the nuances. Anyone not schooled in the events of modern Greek history is going to have a good deal of the political subtext go over his head, and this is never a bad thing; political poetry is often nothing more than polemic dressed up in line breaks. Ritsos has a five-thousand-year tradition of framework to operate in, and he takes full advantage of it, couching his political messages in ancient tales, never (at least, from the perspective of someone less familiar with modern than ancient Greek history) allowing the modern events to overwhelm the stories we're familiar with.
