    Two Seconds
      Wise Poison . By David Rivard. Saint Paul, MN: Graywolf Press, 1996; and
      By Stuart Dischell. New York: Penguin, 1996.
    D avid Rivard provides something that readers may not have known they were missing until they take in the intense, beautiful poems in Wise Poison , Rivard's second book. Rivard writes about life as though he's actually lived it; reading his poems, one realizes how rare a bird that makes him. He doesn't treat contemporary culture merely as a playground for irony or wit, and he doesn't strike the pose of the worldly, hip poet that is so boring a convention of its own. Rather, he takes the material of his life seriously, and he treats the characters in his poems with a refreshingly humane respect, neither romanticizing nor condemning them. The book takes amazement as one of its themes, and it is amazement that comes through most clearly as Rivard's response to the world.

    The Maria Moors Cabot Prizes
    2002 Prize Ceremony
    The Cabot prizes are presented to reporters and editors who have covered the Western Hemisphere and, through their coverage, demonstrated commitment to freedom of the press and inter-American understanding. This year’s ceremony was particularly moving. Michele Montas-Dominque , J’69, the news director for Radio Haiti, was recognized for her wide-ranging reporting on toxic waste, women's banks and the justice system. She has been instrumental in keeping free speech alive in Haiti. Michele paid an emotional tribute to murdered Latin American journalists, including her husband Jean Dominique, assassinated in April 2000. (Read her acceptance speech Columbia University President Lee Bollinger also awarded Cabot prizes to:
    • David Adams , Latin America correspondent for the St. Petersburg Times who has reported on political unrest in Venezuela and the growing U.S. involvement in Colombia's fight against drug trafficking (his acceptance speech is available);

    Le lecteur trouvera ici des études à la fois substantielles et lisibles sur certaines problématiques littéraires, sur l’identité québécoise et franco-ontarienne, sur des classiques de la littérature québécoise (Antoine Gérin-Lajoie, P.-J.O. Chauveau, Ringuet, Germaine Guèvremont, Félix-Antoine Savard, Hubert Aquin, Paul-Marie Lapointe, André Major, Jacques Renaud), et sur quelques écrivains moins fréquentés (François Hertel, Hervé Biron). L’auteur, franco-ontarien de naissance et de formation, québécois d’adoption, est particulièrement sensible aux frontières, aux marges, et aux passages entre univers imaginaires.
